Open Door Christian Fellowship 1. The Vision The vision is to plant a new church in the South Park Estate. The earliest Christian Church met regularly in each other s homes and in the Temple grounds: they shared everything, gave God glory, sought to know Him more and were seen to do good things. Their actions drew others to God and so the church grew. This should not surprise us, Jesus had said that the Gospel would be shared this way. Our desire is to create a Christian community in which the love of Jesus is seen, shared and made known through our sacrificial love, care and commitment to one-another, echoing that which our great Shepherd has shown to us, His little flock. 1 This loving community of believers will draw people s interest and help in the ultimate aims of making Christ known, glorifying God and seeing the Kingdom grow in this corner of Norwich. 34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (John, Chapter 13) opens to the public. 2. The Plan Starting the new church begins with building the community of believers; this takes time. The team will initially meet in homes, worshipping and learning to be the community that the Bible points to as the model for the Church. The time spent together will allow us to grow into a Christshaped community and prepare us to establish the culture and practice of the church before it 3. Theological Positions This introduction includes the Statement of Faith of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC). Everyone who commits to the new church will be expected to wholeheartedly accept the doctrines outlined in it (this does not mean that we will necessarily be an FIEC affiliated Church, that decision will be taken later). Also attached is a list of secondary doctrinal positions. These represent the views held by the current leadership team of Stuart Bailey (Pastor) and Ronnie Simpson (Elder): teaching in the new church will reflect these positions. Those joining the church will not have to hold to these positions but should understand that they will be reflected in the teaching. The church will be elder-led by a plurality of elders (including the Pastor). There will be no formal membership, but the leaders will consult widely and take appropriate measures to discover the opinions of the fellowship before making major decisions. 4. Culture and Values 1 John, Chapter 10, Verses 1-18; Chapter 13, Verse 34 i

There are certain values that we earnestly seek to establish within this new community that will enable us to grow and to share the Gospel: a recognition that the Church is a family a family in which we share with, care for and lovingly disciple one-another under the headship of One Father within the community, there should be an openness and honesty that allows us to share good and bad things struggles, temptations doubts and fears without fear of being judged we should strive to ensure that everyone who comes to any meeting will feel genuinely welcomed and accepted a passionate desire to make Christ known and further His Kingdom should underpin everything we do (corporately and individually) personal evangelism should be accepted as a key way of sharing the Gospel for every Christian every member should put the needs of others (and of the Gospel) before their own desires In short, a Church in which we are able to say I may not like it, but if it is good for the Gospel, then I approve. It is essential the founding team sets and maintains these values so that those joining after the launch join a strong existing culture. 5. What will be expected if I join the team? Church is not a meeting you attend or place you enter. It is an identity that is our in Christ. It is an identity that shapes the whole of life so that life and mission become Total Church. 2 There are 1,104 homes on this estate that equates to approximately 2,300 people. Most of these people have closed their doors to the church; in a recent survey the one word most commonly used to describe the church was hypocrite. However, we live in a time when people are crying out for real friendship. We are the church twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. If people are to meet the church (and thereby meet the Great Shepherd of the Church) they need to meet us. Our aim is to have a community of believers who relate to the world around them and are willing to share the Gospel by building the very friendships that our local community is crying out for. Those joining us will be asked to fully commit to this view of church. Don t worry if you don t know how to or feel that you can t we will work it out together! 2 Total Church, Tim Chester and Steve Timmis, 2010, Page 18 ii

The earliest Christian church shared everything their homes, food, finances and time. We are looking to build a community similarly committed to oneanother. This does not mean that we expect you to bring all your money and lay it at our feet, but that we recognise everything we have as God-given a gift to be used for His glory in whatever way He leads. As in Acts 4, there should be no needy persons among us ; if any of our number need lifts, company, spiritual guidance, help in the house or anything else within our capability, we should be willing to meet that need. 32 All the believers were one on heart and mind. No-one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. 34 There was no needy persons among them. (Acts, Chapter 4) This requires sacrifice and love that reflects that of our Great Shepherd. If you share our desire start a community of believers to reach out to the South Park Estate and beyond and are willing to commit to it, we would love to have you join us in this exciting adventure. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one-another. 12 No-one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us. (1 John, Chapter 4) Stuart Bailey (Pastor) Ronald Simpson (Elder) iii

FIEC Statement of faith 1. God There is one God, who exists eternally in three distinct but equal persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God is unchangeable in his holiness, justice, wisdom and love. He is the almighty Creator; Saviour and Judge who sustains and governs all things according to his sovereign will for his own glory. 2. The Bible God has revealed himself in the Bible, which consists of the Old and New Testaments alone. Every word was inspired by God through human authors, so that the Bible as originally given is in its entirety the Word of God, without error and fully reliable in fact and doctrine. The Bible alone speaks with final authority and is always sufficient for all matters of belief and practice. 3. The Human Race All men and women, being created in the image of God, have inherent and equal dignity and worth. Their greatest purpose is to obey, worship and love God. As a result of the fall of our first parents, every aspect of human nature has been corrupted and all men and women are without spiritual life, guilty sinners and hostile to God. Every person is therefore under the just condemnation of God and needs to be born again, forgiven and reconciled to God in order to know and please him. 4. The Lord Jesus Christ The Lord Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, and lived a sinless life in obedience to the Father. He taught with authority and all his words are true. On the cross he died in the place of sinners, bearing God s punishment for their sin, redeeming them by his blood. He rose from the dead and in his resurrection body ascended into heaven where he is exalted as Lord of all. He intercedes for his people in the presence of the Father. 5. Salvation Salvation is entirely a work of God s grace and cannot be earned or deserved. It has been accomplished by the Lord Jesus Christ and is offered to all in the gospel. God in his love forgives sinners whom he calls, granting them repentance and faith. All who believe in Christ are justified by faith alone, adopted into the family of God and receive eternal life. 6. The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit has been sent from heaven to glorify Christ and to apply his work of salvation. He convicts sinners, imparts spiritual life and gives a true understanding of the Scriptures. He indwells all believers, brings assurance of salvation and produces increasing likeness to Christ. He builds up the Church and empowers its members for worship, service and mission. iv

7. The Church The universal Church is the body of which Christ is the head and to which all who are saved belong. It is made visible in local churches, which are congregations of believers who are committed to each other for the worship of God, the preaching of the Word, the administering of Baptism and the Lord s Supper; for pastoral care and discipline, and for evangelism. The unity of the body of Christ is expressed within and between churches by mutual love, care and encouragement. True fellowship between churches exists only where they are faithful to the gospel. 8. Baptism and the Lord s Supper Baptism and the Lord s Supper have been given to the churches by Christ as visible signs of the gospel. Baptism is a symbol of union with Christ and entry into his Church but does not impart spiritual life. The Lord s Supper is a commemoration of Christ s sacrifice offered once for all and involves no change in the bread and wine. All its blessings are received by faith. 9. The Future The Lord Jesus Christ will return in glory. He will raise the dead and judge the world in righteousness. The wicked will be sent to eternal punishment and the righteous will be welcomed into a life of eternal joy in fellowship with God. God will make all things new and will be glorified forever. v

The following issues are secondary. Those joining us do not have to agree with them all, but should understand that teaching in the church will reflect these views. Anyone accepting a leadership role will need to agree not to teach contradictory positions. 1. Literal Creation The opening Chapters of the Bible are history portraying God s literal creation in six days. 2. Believer s Baptism Baptism is for professing believers as a sign of their faith and commitment to Christ as their Lord and Saviour. We will not baptise infants. 3. Complementary Ministries Men and women have equal value and worth, both being created in the image of God and saved as full sons of God through faith in Jesus Christ. However, there are certain ministries in the church that are for men alone. The Bible states that women should not have spiritual authority over men 3, for this reason we will not invite women to preach, become elders or to be the pastor. Women will be allowed to undertake many other responsibilities in the church, including deacon posts. 4. Spiritual Gifts The church will take neither a Pentecostal nor a Cessationist view on Spiritual Gifts. We will not teach that a Baptism of the Spirit is required (separately from conversion) for the gifts to be given nor will we teach that the gifts ceased with the passing of the Apostolic Age. The gifts are still given to believers and are available to all believers but remain under the control of the recipient; they are to be used in a structured way for the good of the whole church. 4 5. Election A correct understanding of the doctrine of election (God chose believers before time began) enhances our view of our relationship with God and our utter dependence on Him. 6. Marriage Marriage is a gift of God for the good of society. It is for one man and one woman and provides the best framework for family life. We do not recognise same-sex relationships as marriage. However, if people attend a service or any of our gatherings and are in a relationship that does not accord with this view, we will treat them with respect and dignity: like each of us, they are sinners in need of God s redeeming grace. 7. Eschatology (end times) Of the various understandings of the end-times, I find that an a-millennial view (there is no literal 1000 year reign) presents the fewest objections and the best fit of the whole of scripture. Having said that, I agree with Wayne Grudem that it is a subject on which we must be willing to accept that we could be wrong; 5 it is very much a secondary issue! 3 1 Timothy, Chapter 2, Verse 12 4 1 Corinthians Chapter 14 5 Systematic Theology, Wayne Grudem, 2003, Page 1114 vi
