Congregation Ahavat Chesed Newsletter Purim-Passover 2010/5770 President s Address by Joseph S. Orlando brmc president One of things I am most impressed with at Bergen Regional is the rich and diversified religious presence we have in the facility. I enjoy attending all the services and am very proud of the dynamic congregation we have here Ahavat Chesed. It is one of my goals to see that congregation grow and continue to thrive. I believe that pastoral care is a key element in health care and I have seen first hand the tremendous impact it has here on our patients and long term care residents. This is why we are committed to renovating the chapel over the next few years. Working closely with the Foundation at Bergen Regional Medical Center, we will be taking steps to enhance and remodel the BRMC chapel to better serve the spiritual needs of all those who worship there. I am truly blessed to lead this facility that has such a strong mission and vision. I am even more fortunate to have the chance to share in the rich lives of our residents and reap the benefits of the diversified spirituality that is abundant at Bergen Regional. Please accept my sincerest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season. President Orlando with Chaplain Rabbi Barry Schneider (right). Israel s Birthday Please join us to celebrate Israel s 62nd birthday with a lavish luncheon in the chapel on Thursday, April 15. Rabbi Schneider will lead a moving tribute to the State of Israel, including a prayer for the country and the Israel Defense Forces. Get me to the Chapel on Time Our Mincha Minyan has been a great success. This winter we had more than 25 people at our d a i l y service. Mincha time is 1 pm, Monday through Thursday, in the Chapel. Beginning Monday, March 15, mincha will start at 1:30 pm DST. The Mincha Minyanaires wish everyone a Happy Passover. If you would like to be a regular participant, please contact Rabbi Schneider at ext 4177. 2

Vol. III Issue II Bergen Regional Medical Center record number of residents turned out for the A annual Open Board Meeting of Congregation Ahavat Chesed on November 19. Chaired by President Eli Malka (pictured), more than 30 patients, residents and volunteers gathered for the lunchtime meeting to plan religious and social programming for the year ahead. The yearly meeting empowers residents to take Order, Order! Residents plan new programs at Open Board Meeting Pipe Dreams charge of Jewish life at the synagogue. Several new charitable initiatives were suggested, including a boutique sale and a guest-speaker series Following a delicious buffet of bagel and lox, returning guest speaker Karl de Vries, a local journalist, spoke to the group about his recent trip to Israel with Taglit-Birthright. It was a life-changing experience, he said. From the Metropolitan to BRMC, opera star Lisa Paul shares the talent that made her famous There s a celebrity in town. Resident Lisa Paul, an accomplished opera singer and performer who has graced the stage of the Metropolitan Opera, is sharing her voice with BRMC residents. At this year s Hannukkah party, Lisa s own vocal recordings piped through the Chapel. It s a big thrill, says Lisa, an elegant lady with silver hair and stylish accessories. Raised in California, Lisa studied music in high school and college, and went on to sing on famous stages in New York, Scotland and London. She dabbled in acting and ballet along the way, but turned down offers to dance on Broadway. My passion was for opera, she says. Her favorite performance was in Madame Butterfly. Lisa says she enjoyed dressing up in the elaborate stage costumes, and still remembers fondly a white fox fur gown she wore to industry events. At the time I had the attention of several famous tenors who found me very beautiful, she says with a twinkle in her eye. Still, as much as Lisa loved dressing up, she refused to dye her hair blond for a particular performance and lost out on the role. I was afraid of what it would do to my hair, she laughs. A resident at BRMC for the past several years, Lisa says she attends services and programs to keep active. They re nice here, and I like the freedom, she says. I especially like the Jewish activities and Rabbi Schneider, he has a special neshama (soul). 3 Winter Spring Edition-5770

Congregation Ahavat Chesed Newsletter One of my first newsletter articles was devoted to thanking all the people who make the programs run by Congregation Ahavat Chesed- BRMC possible. In this article, I would like to thank some special people and groups who have devoted themselves to see that our Jewish program and congregation not only survives but also thrives. I have said over and over again that no congregation can exist anywhere without its volunteer base. Congregation Ahavat Chesed has one of the best and devoted groups of volunteers. What makes this group special is not only its commitment to the program but also its personal commitment to our individual members, mostly our residents in Long Term Care. If a resident can t attend a program or service, the volunteers bring whatever they can to them. If a resident doesn t feel well, they make sure that we say a prayer on their behalf. If family members visit, they know it. They commiserate with them in illness and rejoice Rabbi s Message By Rabbi Barry Schneider brmc chaplain with them when a simcha happy occasion occurs. Our newsletter, Kol Chesed, which now appears three times a year, is made possible by the single-handed efforts of Eliana Mechlowitz. A journalist and editor by profession, she has worked tirelessly to publish a firstclass newsletter. She comes to our programs, talks with the residents and volunteers, takes our photographs and works very hard to see that we have publicity in local newspapers, i.e. The Jewish Standard. Donnalee Corrieri, a BRMC VP, has always been interested in what Pastoral Care is doing and accomplishing. But Donnalee is more than an interested person; she has taken upon herself an added title as the administrative Liaison between the Board and Pastoral Care. Her devotion and idealism has made her a pleasure to work with. Whenever I walk into her office (which is frequently) I always receive a smile, a seat, and an attentive ear. And then there is the Foundation at BRMC. In the beginning, we Purim-Passover 2010/5770 needed a flat screen monitor and DVD player for our Torah study group, which met in Bldg. 11. We got in contact with the Foundation and within a short time we had our media center set up. When our Congregation was officially organized and recognized by The UJA NNJ (The Jewish Federation), the Foundation was there to help us issue tax-exempt receipts for the many donations that we were beginning to receive. Now the Foundation has taken its commitment a step further, underwriting all our programs (as well as all the Pastoral Care Programs of all the Chaplains) one hundred percent. This year the Foundation has undertaken a new commitment, to help fund a complete refurbishment and enhancement to our Chapel. Plans are already underway in that department and very soon we will see the results. So thank you everyone for making Congregation Ahavat Chesed possible and giving new life to our patients, residents and their families. BRMC is their home and Congregation Ahavat Chested is their synagogue. We wish everyone a Freilicha Purim and a Happy Passover. continues in January. Please see our calendar on pages 6 and 7 for details. Please join us for an innovative Tu B Shevat Seder on February 4, at noon, in the chapel. The Seder is an interactive experience that enables participants to share in the joys of the holiday. The service includes The Four Cups of Wine, discussions about nature, and a full luncheon. 4

Vol. III Issue II Bergen Regional Medical Center Lighting Up! More than 150 residents, staff and volunteers filled the Chapel for the annual Hanukkah party on December 17. The festivities kicked off with a moving menorah-lighting service led by Rabbi Barry Schneider, followed by a lively medley of Hanukkah rock by Cantor Ilan Mamber and his trusty guitar. Guests dined on a deluxe buffet of roast beef, grilled chicken and latkes, topped off with holiday chocolates and cakes. Residents received gift bags and cards created by local Jewish groups and schoolchildren, along with a special bag of truffles made by volunteer Elaine Goldmintz. Thanks to the volunteers who spent hours decorating and setting up the Chapel. The annual Sukkot- Luncheon was a huge success. With the sun shining and blue skies overhead, it was a lovely day to enjoy the Sukkah. More than 100 volunteers, residents and staff attended the celebration. Following Rabbi Schneider s d var Torah and a Lulav and Etrog Ceremony, everyone tucked Sukkot into a delicious Chinese buffet of steaming hot eggrolls, fried rice and pepper steak. Guests also enjoyed a deluxe tea and dessert bar. T h a n k s to the volunteers and rec therapy for their hard work bringing residents to and from the Sukkah. 5 Winter Spring Edition-5770

Vol. III Issue II Bergen Regional Medical Center 9 Winter Spring Edition-5770

Congregation Ahavat Chesed Newsletter Purim-Passover 2010/5770 The Doctor is In By Judah Schorr, MD, Director of Anesthesia A Glass of Bubbly Won t Hurt Purim is one of the most joyous and fun holidays in the Jewish calendar. It commemorates a time when the Jewish people in Persia were saved from extinction. To paraphrase the comedian Jackie Mason, Jewish holidays can be summarized by the following phrase: They tried to kill us, we fought, we won, and now, let s eat. We celebrate Purim by reading Esther s megillah, which tells the story of how the Jews of Persia were saved. We give charity and we eat and drink with abandon. We are supposed to drink enough so that we can t differentiate between Haman, the bad guy, and Mordechai, the good guy, in the Purim story. While drinking to excess on a regular basis will cause great damage to your health, scientific studies agree that drinking, within reason, may actually be beneficial to your well-being This is not to suggest that you take up drinking if you don t already do so, but if you enjoy a glass of wine or a beer now and then, you may reap some benefits A drink can reduce stress; promote conviviality and pleasant and carefree feelings; and decrease tension, anxiety, and self-consciousness. In the elderly, moderate drinking has been reported to stimulate appetite, promote regular bowel function, and improve mood. Moderate drinking may decrease the risk of death from coronary artery disease. Some studies suggest that red wine has even more heart-health benefits than other types of alcohol, while other studies show that red wine isn t any better than beer, white wine or liquor for heart health. Holiday Greetings am pleased to have been appointed as the vice I president liaison to pastoral care. In this capacity, I will have the opportunity to work even more closely with the Bergen Regional Chaplains to further the dynamic and diversified pastoral care program at BRMC. One of our first and most important initiatives will be the renovation of the BRMC chapel. Our chapel provides the main source of religious worship for the more than 570 residents who live at BRMC as well as all those friends, family members, patients and visitors who pass through our doors. We are planning an October fund-raising event, The Concert for the Chapel, an evening of music and inspiration specifically targeted to raise funds for this project. More details regarding this endeavor will be forthcoming over the next few weeks. We are also redesigning our Pastoral Care brochure. To that end, we have a strong tool to let all those who desire religious services know how to obtain the spiritual connection they deserve. We have such a vital Congregation led by Rabbi Schneider that we hope to grow your numbers in the coming months and emulate your success within our other religious offerings. We have many exciting projects ahead and I look forward to working closely with our Chaplains and all of you to continue to enjoy and expand our amazing pastoral care services. My best wishes to all of you for a happy and healty holiday season. Donnalee Corrieri Bergen Regional Medical Center Vice President 10

Vol. III Issue II I ve asked myself this question so many times why, indeed, am I a volunteer? When I get to my selfappointed hospital station and wait for the service to begin, I think impatiently, what am I doing here? I come to this hospital on Thursday afternoons along with other volunteers to help bring some very sick people to the chapel where Rabbi Barry Schneider conducts Shabbat services for them. We wheel them down or walk them from their hospital floors, try to make conversation with them, and hope that they will somehow feel fulfilled by this brief respite from their daily hospital routine. They have all had lives that were in one way or another consequential and meaningful. They are not nobodies. One gentleman, for instance, was an officer in the Red Army during the Second World War as the Russians slashed their way westward across Europe to help end the Nazis reign of terror. He lives here now, with breathing tube and a feeding tube, weak and Volunteer View Why do I Volunteer? By Miriam Moskowitz volunteer helpless. And I remember, so I owe him something. And as Rabbi Schneider intones the service or delivers his ruminations on the portion of the week, or encourages the patients and volunteers to exchange ideas with him or to participate in the prayers or to sing, I look around to study the faces of the participants. It s not as though I don t have an alternative to this way of spending Thursday afternoons, but I remember those who first taught me who I was and embedded in me an ancient heritage. So when I come here on Thursday afternoons, am I reconnecting with my loving mother who struggled during the Depression to provide a warm, safe, nurturing Jewish home, and who devotedly sewed up a jester costume for me for the Purim play I appeared in at cheder; and my blessed father who catapulted me into euphoric bliss when he presented me with the Miriam Moskowitz, left, serving fruit at the Sukkot Luncheon with fellow volunteers. Bergen Regional Medical Center roller skates I hadn t dared to hope for; or my favorite uncle who teased me about my freckles as he slipped me a forbidden candy even as he donned his talith and davened in cloistered devotion? And, most recently, my beloved brother, the epitome of goodness, who was far better at giving of himself than I could ever be? So what am I doing here? I m reconnecting in the way they taught me; I m re-identifying with them because this is what they would be doing and if I manage to make that reconnection it fills me with uncomplicated peace and love and remembrance. And I m also trying to tell the former army officer, thank you, for a debt that can never be repaid, and to give thanks to the others who enriched my life. And I guess, if it makes any sense, that s what I m doing here. Shalom, Miriam Moskowitz 11 Winter Spring Edition-5770

Congregation Ahavat Chesed Newsletter Purim-Passover Edition 2010 5770 Making a Difference The Jewish holidays are the traditional time to make charitable contributions and designate them to our favorite causes. Over the past year, Congregation Ahavat Chesed has received many donations from staff, volunteers, families and residents in support of our programs. As well, many people have purchased our special occasion cards with proceeds going to fund our activities. Cards can be used to mark a lifecycle event, milestone, birthday or simcha. All you need to do is give us a call (201-967-4177) and we will happily personalize the card and mail it to your loved one. We ask for a minimum of ten dollars, and you will receive a tax-exempt receipt for your contribution. If you wish to make your own contribution to our congregation, please make checks payable to the Foundation at Bergen Regional Medical Center, and on the memo line write Congregation Ahavat Chesed-BRMC. You will receive a tax-exempt receipt from us before the end of the tax year. All contributions go into a special account to be used exclusively by the congregation. Thank you to all our readers for your support. Annual Passover Seder Please join us for the annual Passover Seder on March 25, at noon, in the auditorium. The traditional gathering at which family and friends retell the story of the Israelites Exodus from Egypt will be conducted by Rabbi Schneider with lively guitar accompaniment by Cantor Ilan Mamber. Guests will have the opportunity to partake in the seder and enjoy a traditional holiday buffet lunch. We look forward to seeing you.
