Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School Hello St. Pius X / St. Leo Community members, I hope you are all doing well and continue to pray for you all during this Lenten season. As always, we continue to be blessed by the amazing accomplishments of our teachers and our students. On Thursday, March 8th we were blessed to have Mrs. Jen Christen, the Dean of Student Services at Marian High School and an St. Pius X / St. Leo school parent come forward after school mass to make a presentation to Shantise Pearson, an eighth-grade student at SPSL. Shantise received a special academic scholarship to Marian High School. The Thelma M. Landstrom Scholarship gives students who qualify for financial assistance an opportunity for a full ride to Marian. Candidates must shadow at Marian, qualify for admission through the placement exam, write an essay, and provide a letter of recommendation from SPSL. Shantise Pearson joins St. Pius X / St. Leo school alumni McKenna Blaine and Madison Blaine in being recipients of this prestigious scholarship. Over the past 5 years, three students from SPSL have been awarded the Thelma M. Landstrom Scholarship. Way to go Panthers! Additionally, this past week our 2nd grade had fun connecting with students from another school in another state using Google Hangout. The second graders have been studying United States geography and our 2nd teachers have been preparing the students on Nebraska geography and map skills. The second graders did not know which state the students they were connecting with were from and vice versa. The students at both schools played 20 questions in an attempt to figure out where St. Pius X / St. Leo school was located and what state the non-nebraska school was located in. The students found out that the school they had to guess was east of the Mississippi and bordered two Great Lakes. Also, the state name is two words. Do you know where they were from? The past few weeks our students have been having lots of fun in and around the school with our learning, especially in Kindergarten. Our kindergarteners have been learning about simple machines. The lessons have been highly interactive with the students actively becoming simple machines to learn about science in an authentic way. Later in the week, in celebration for St. Patrick s Day, the Kindergarten students applied their knowledge from the simple machine lessons and built their own Leprechaun traps using various simple machines (and of course some Lucky Charms cereal for bait). It is great to see every day, as is evident in Kindergarten and 2nd grade, the implementation of science and technology in all grades, especially our younger grades, and also in authentic and engaging ways. Thank you for all your continued support for your school and for continuing to read about all the great things happening. God bless you all and Go Panthers! St. Pius X/St. Leo School If you have children in grades Pre-Kindergarten (3- year-old program has a waiting list) 4 year olds to Grade 8 that you are thinking about sending to our school for the next school year, please call our school office at 402-551-6667 to set up a time to come and visit, and, then register your child/ren when you decide to come to our school. In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman If you were asked, what is the most important moment in the history of the human race, what would be your answer? Some might say, when man invented the wheel, or when the printing press was invented. As Christians our answer should be: the week Jesus of Nazareth entered Jerusalem, was crucified, died and after three days rose from the dead. This is the most defining moment in human history because the creator of the universe allowed his only begotten Son to die for our sins. Jesus died to reconcile us to the Father, so that by our faith in Jesus Christ we might have the opportunity for ever-lasting life. It was the moment in time when the light and truth of God came to earth. Today we open with the Gospel from Mark, as Jesus mounts a small donkey, rides into Jerusalem and is acclaimed as the Messiah. We also hear about the Lord s Passion as written by Mark. In less than a week s time our Lord Jesus has gone from Messiah and King to being executed like a criminal. Our Lord Jesus was condemned to death and suffered the most horrible form of capital punishment ever devised by man. Our sins condemned Jesus to death, he who was the visible form of the invisible God. As Paul said in our second reading, Jesus was in the form of God, but he humbled himself, and was obedient to the point of death. But God exalted him and bestowed on him the name above all names, so that at Jesus name every knee must bend and every tongue proclaim, to the glory of the Father, Jesus Christ is Lord!
