PALM SUNDAY MARCH 25, 2018 The Clergy s Corner Beware of the Old Guard by The Rev. Nathanael Saint-Pierre When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he was ready to face his destiny. He had done every step carefully, executed his choreography to perfection: cured the sick, raised the dead, prayed God to take away the bitter cup he was to drink. He knew this was his last step, where everything will be fulfilled. But the old guard is never ready to understand one s call and destiny. They prefer to create obstructions: build walls, amplify segregation, and maintain the status quo. When they do not question the new minister s sermons, they use them to fix him. They know better than he does. Nothing he has done matters and, instead of looking at what God has accomplished through him, the old guard is ready to associate itself with the oppressive systems to negate his identity and deny him gratitude. So, what does it mean to be followers of Jesus, knowing how Jesus himself was treated? In Mark 11:1-11, Jesus gave instructions to his disciples about what is soon to happen; but, as usual, people never understand their role in history, their moment in history, their place in history. People always prefer to twist and trick the thoughts or methods of others to give them different meanings. The Pharisees, doctors of the law, and the Sadducees, the clergy and aristocrats, had plenty of opportunity to change history and to re-establish the integrity of the temple; but they did not. Instead, they chose corruption. They associated themselves with the oppressive systems of their time to enslave people, both materially and spiritually. Once Jesus started doing things differently and changing the core of the usual message to something bigger than the old guard, they identified him as a threat, an enemy of their power, as someone they should challenge and destroy at the first opportunity. 2

PALM SUNDAY MARCH 25, 2018 They used his own words or his own interpretation of Scripture to accuse him of blasphemy. When the old guard is after you, nothing is off limits. Jesus was called to come to rescue humankind but these groups (the old guard) won t let him; or so they thought. He asked his disciples to go into the village and find a colt. Despite all he had done, he needed to justify himself. He had to tell them what to answer if questioned. Do you remember how Peter rebuked him about talking about his death? Do you remember how at least two of his disciples cared about position in the kingdom rather than salvation for all? Someone, somewhere, will always believe they know better. Let them. Keep on walking to your destiny, your destination: Jerusalem. After all, Christians are not those who, so obsessed about showing good heart, do not hold themselves and others accountable. Surprisingly, this is not new. From the beginning of creation to today, even God is questioned. People prefer to believe in their own science instead of leaving it up to God. When one starts telling them about one s experience with God, they look at him as if he is crazy. God cannot speak to humankind, they argue. God cannot inspire humans, they overbid. God cannot be guiding someone. So, to be followers of Jesus is to have the ability to suppress all those noises created by the old guard, to stay focused on this role, this moment, this place in history and do your part. We are place in this place, at this particular time, for a purpose. It is our time! Their distractions should not be dignified with a response. One cannot live life without resistance, without questions, without constantly having to prove who one is, what one is, and where one is going. They will use where one comes from as if it is an impediment to what God wants one to be. That s what oppressive systems do. 3

PALM SUNDAY MARCH 25, 2018 Making one feel not competent enough, not of the right race, of the right kind, the right class. By denying one legitimacy, they find sufficient reason to index/classify one as not belonging. From Egypt to Jerusalem to today, the old guard will always question what God is trying to accomplish in this world. Some will come with palms in their hands, shouting Hosanna because their purpose is to sneak in. (It wasn t until I viewed the movie Black Panther that I discovered the meaning of sneakers. They are a pair of shoes that allow the wearer to come in undetected.) But the objective of the old guard is not to have faith in God s plan; it is to find something wrong in every change one does. They will insist on the same methods and believe that they hold the higher wisdom, the exclusive truth and won t even admit their own failures or that time has come for them to change or walk away. Ask yourself, Was Jesus always wise? Do you think he would have done what he was called to do if he gave a pass to Simon, Thomas, the merchant in the temple, and Judas? On this last day of Lent, after I spoke to you about death last Sunday, it is important for you to know that if it were not for the death of Jesus, salvation would have been unattainable. It is not what we do or our wisdom that provided redemption. So, when you want to accomplish your call, your destiny, your mission, when some want to prevent you from reaching Jerusalem, beware of the old guard. They ll challenge you, they ll belittle you, they ll bully you. They might even try to kill you (draining you spiritually, mentally, and physically). Remember that you are not in this for the crown. Victory is for those who proudly take their cross and are ready to meet God and evil in the world. But even while meeting evil; be mindful that you are not in this for yourself. You are in the world to transform the world, not to be transformed by the evil in it. is not about us. It is about the one who came and for whom we shout, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. 4

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A THE LITURGY OF THE PALMS The following anthem is sung or said Celebrant: Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. People: Peace in heaven and glory in the highest. Celebrant: Let us pray. Assist us merciful with your help, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts, whereby you ave given us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Here a Deacon or other person appointed reads one of the following THE Gospel John 12:12-16 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John. All Glory to you, Lord Christ. The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord the King of Israel! Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it; as it is written: Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion. Look, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt! His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written of him and had been done to him. Celebrant People The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you Lord Christ 1

The Celebrant then says the following blessing The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A People Celebrant People God be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. The following or some other suitable anthem may then be sung or said Celebrant People Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. THE PROCESSION Celebrant People Let us go forth in peace. In the name of Christ. Amen During the procession, all hold branches in their hands, and appropriate hymns, psalms, or anthems are sung, such as the hymn All glory, laud, and honor and Psalm 118:19-29. The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. At a suitable place, the procession may halt while the following Collect is said Gracious Father, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 5

The Sunday of the Passion: BCP p. 219 Merciful and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.. 6

THE OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 50:4-9a The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A The life of faith may require suffering, but God promises never to leave or forsake us in the midst of trial. A reading (lesson) from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people All Thanks be to God. The response Psalm 31:9-16 In te, Domine, speravi BCP pg. 622 9 Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; * my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly. 10 For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing; * my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. 7

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A 11 I have become a reproach to all my enemies and even to my neighbors, a dismay to those of my acquaintance; * when they see me in the street they avoid me. 12 I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind; * I am as useless as a broken pot. 13 For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around; * they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life. 14 But as for me, I have trusted in you, O LORD. * I have said, "You are my God. 15 My times are in your hand; * rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. 16 Make your face to shine upon your servant, * and in your loving-kindness save me." Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. THE EPISTLE Philippians 2:5-11 Jesus is the example for how to live our lives. We are not equal with God, as Jesus is, but even though he has this power and prestige, he made himself a servant. How much more are we called to be servants, rather than masters? A reading (lesson) from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians: 8

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A All Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people Thanks be to God. SEQUENCE HYMN: WERE YOU THERE? (Three stanzas only) #37(LEVAS) 9

THE GOSPEL The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A Mark 14:32-15-39 (40-47) or [15:1-39 (40-47)] The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to Mark The customary responses before and after the Gospel are omitted. The congregation may be seated for the first part of the Passion. At the verse which mentions the arrival at Golgotha, [Mark 15:22], page 68, all stand. Jesus Jesus Jesus Jesus They went to a place called which was called Gethsem'ane; and Jesus said to his disciples, Sit here, while I pray. And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch. And going a little farther he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible to thee; remove this cup from me; yet not what I will, but what thou wilt. And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. And again he came and found them sleeping for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer him. And he came the third time, and said to them, 10

Jesus Reader Reader Jesus The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour is come; the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand. And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priest and the scribes and the elders. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, The one I shall kiss is the man; seize him and lead him away under guard. And when he came, he went up to him at once, and said, Hail Master! And he kissed him. And they laid hands on him and seized him. But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. And Jesus said to them, Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the scripture be fulfilled. And they all forsook him, and fled. And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body; and they seized him, but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked. And they led Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priest and the elders and the scribes were assembled. All Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest; and he was sitting with the guards, and warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priest and the whole council sought testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. For many bore false witness 11

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A against him, and their witness did not agree. And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, Reader(s) Reader Reader We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands. Yet not even so did their testimony agree. And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you? But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? And Jesus said, Jesus Reader Reader(s) I am; and you will see the Son of man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven. And the high priest tore his garments, and said, Why do we still need witnesses? You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision? And they all condemned him as deserving death. And some began to spit on him, and cover his face, and to strike him, saying to him, Prophesy! And the guards received him with blows. And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the maids of the high priest came; and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, 12

Reader Reader Reader Reader(s) Reader You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus. But he denied it, saying, The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A I neither know nor understand what you mean. And he went out into the gateway. And the maid saw him, And began again to say to the bystanders, This man is one of them. But again he denied it. And after a little while again the bystanders said to Peter, Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galilean. But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, I do not know this man of whom you speak. And immediately the cock crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times. And he broke down and wept. The shorter form of the Passion begins here [Mark 15:1-39 (40-47)] Reader Jesus And as soon as it was morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, and the whole council held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he answered him, You have said so. 13

Reader Reader Reader Crowd Reader Crowd The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A And the chief priest accused him of many things. And the Pilate again asked him, Have you no answer to make: See how many charges they bring against you. But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate wondered. Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barab bas. And the crowed came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he was wont to do for them. And he asked them, Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews? For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priest had delivered him up. But the chief priests stirred up the crowed to have him released for the Barab bas instead. And Pilate again said to them, Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, Crucify him. And Pilate said to them, Why, what evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, Crucify him. 14

Reader(s) The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barab bas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the pratorium); and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on him. And they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! And they struck his head with a reed, and spat upon him, and they knelt down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him. And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyre ne, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. All Stand Reader(s) And they brought him to the place called Gol gatha (which means the place of the skull). And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh; but he did not take it. And they crucified him, and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour, when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read The King of the Jews. And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, and saying, Aha! You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross! So also the chief priests mocked him to one another with the scribes, saying, 15

Reader(s) Jesus Jesus Reader(s) Reader The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down from the cross, that we may see and believe. Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, E lo-i, E lo-i, la ma, sabach-tha ni? Which means, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And some of the bystanders hearing it said, Behold, he is calling Eli jah. And one ran and, filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, Saying, Wait, let us see whether Eli jah will come take him down. And Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed his last. Silence may be kept. Reader And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom, and when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that he thus breathed his last, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God! The following passage may be added [Mark 15:40-47] 16

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Mag dalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salo me, who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him; and also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathe a, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if he were already dead, and summoning the centurion, he asked him weather he was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Mag dalene and Mary the mother of Jesus saw where he was laid. 17

The Sermon: Beware of the Old Guard by The Rev. Nathanael Saint-Pierre The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A Situation: When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, he was ready to face his destiny. He had done every step carefully, executed his choreography to perfection: cured the sick, raised the dead, prayed God to take away the bitter cup he was to drink. He knew this was his last step, where everything will be fulfilled. Complication: But the old guard is never ready to understand one s call and destiny. Resolution: In Mark 11:1-11, Jesus gave instructions to his disciples about what is soon to happen; but, as usual, people never understand their role in history, their moment in history, their place in history. They used his own words or his own interpretation of Scripture to accuse him of blasphemy. 18

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A Someone, somewhere, will always believe they know better. Making one feel not competent enough, not of the right race, of the right kind, the right class. By denying one legitimacy, they find sufficient reason to index/classify one as not belonging. Celebration: From Egypt to Jerusalem to today, the old guard will always question what God is trying to accomplish in this world. 19

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A On this last day of Lent, after I spoke to you about death last Sunday, it is important for you to know that if it were not for the death of Jesus, salvation would have been unattainable. 20

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A THE NICENE CREED BCP p. 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. who with 21

the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: (Unknown Source) Deacon or other leader Let us pray for peace in the Church and in the world. With all our heart and all our mind, we pray to you, O Lord: Make us instruments of your peace. For the peace of the world; that a spirit of respect and forbearance may grow among nations and peoples, we pray to you, O Lord: Where there is hatred, let us sow love. For our enemies and those who wish us harm, and for all whom we have injured or offended, we pray to you, O Lord: Where there is injury, let us sow pardon. For all who fear God and believe in you, Lord Christ, that our divisions may cease, and all may be one as you and the Father are one, we pray to you, O Lord: Where there is discord, let us sow union. For those who do not yet believe, for those who have lost their faith, and those in despair and darkness that they may receive the light of the faith, we pray to you, O Lord: Where there is doubt, let us sow faith. 22

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, especially those who have asked of our prayers, for all who suffer and those who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected, we pray to you, O Lord: Where there is despair, let us sow hope. For the mission and ministry of the Episcopal Church especially in the diocese of New York for this church of St Augustine s, and all who are gathered to pray, that in faithful witness we may preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth, we pray to you, O Lord: Where there is darkness, let us sow light. For all who have died in the hope of the resurrection, for all the departed and those who are grieving, may they find comfort and be at peace, we pray to you, O Lord: Where there is sadness, let us sow joy. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others (people may offer their prayers, either silently or aloud). Silence The People may add their own petitions. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. Confession and Absolution The Deacon or Celebrant says Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept. Minister and People God of all mercy: We confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in ourselves, and in the world, you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, And the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, 23

24 The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. The Priest, stands and says Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. THE PEACE BCP p. 360 All stand. The Celebrant says to the people Celebrant All The peace of God be always with you. And also with you. The Ministers and People greet one another in the name of the Lord. The Holy Communion The Celebrant begins the Offertory with the following sentence. OFFERTORY SENTENCE Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2 THE OFFERTORY OFFERTORY MUSIC WERE YOU THERE? Uzee Brown, Jr. OFFERTORY O SACRED HEAD (5) #168(HYMNAL) THE DOXOLOGY THE GREAT THANKSGIVING: EUCHARISTIC PRAYER A The people remain standing. The Celebrant, faces them and sings or says Celebrant All Celebrant All Celebrant All God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A Then, facing the Holy Table, the Celebrant proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed. PROPER PREFACE BCP p. 379 You bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the Paschal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: SANCTUS ET BENEDICTUS All together #S125 (1982 HYMNAL) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of mercy and grace, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. The people stand or kneel. Then the Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. 25

26 The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated. Hagan esto como memorial mío"] On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for ALL. Do this for the remembrance of me. " ["Después de la cena tomó el cáliz; y dándote gracias, se lo entregó, y dijo: "Beban todos de él. Esta es mi Sangre del nuevo Pacto, sangre derramada por TODOS para el perdón de los pecados. Siempre que lo beban, háganlo como memorial mío".] After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for ALL for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: All together Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

The Holy Eucharist: Rite Two: Eucharist Prayer A All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to sing: THE LORD S PRAYER All together Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Then may be said FRACTION ANTHEM BCP P. 364 Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore, let us keep the feast. AGNUS DEI Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: Have mercy on us Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: Have mercy on us Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: Grant us Peace Facing the people, the Celebrant says the following Invitation #270 (LEVAS) The Gifts of God for the People of God; Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people. The Bread and the Cup are given to the communicants with these words 27

The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. [Amen.] The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation.
