PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND AND ROME OCTOBER 6-17,2013 Spiritual Leader: Msgr. John M. Costello Pastor, St. Peter Parish, Kirkwood, Missouri SUNDAY, OCTOBER 6 - Depart from our home city, and arrive in Chicago to connect to flights overnight totel Aviv. Dinner and breakfast served aboard. D (dinner) & B (breakfast) MONDAY, OCTOBER 7 - Arrival at Ben Gurion Airport this afternoon. We clear customs and transfer by motor coach to our hotel in Tiberias, located directly on the Sea of Galilee. We check in and have dinner together. D TIBERIAS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 8 - This morning we head to Mt. Beatitudes, which overlooks the Sea of Galilee. In this scenic setting Jesus preached His Sermon on the Mount We open our pilgrimage by MASS at a garden altar on MOUNT BEATITUDES. Then we drive west to Nazareth. Just a short distance before our destination we stop in Cana, where Jesus' first miracle took place. Those who wish may renew their wedding vows, and all can remember Mary's words, "Do whatever He tells you." In Nazareth, where Jesus spent most of His Life, we go to it beautiful Basilica of the Annunciation, and at the Grotto of the Annunciation we venerate the very place where the Word Was Made Flesh. We will also visit St. Joseph's Workshop. We then head to the Mediterranean coastline, driving north to ascend the Carmel Mountain Range, where we make a stop for lunch. Arriving at the site of Muhraqa, we recall Elijah's challenge and defeat of the 450 prophets of Baal. We continue on to Stella Maris on Mt. Carmel, the largest monastery of the Carmelite Order and its headquarters. Here we see the Cave of Elijah. Back at our hotel we have dinner together. B & D TIBERIAS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9 - This morning we again drive along the Sea of Galilee to stop at a site called Tabgha (Seven Springs). There we are at the site of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. Next we visit the Church of the Primacy of Peter, the place where Our Lord bestowed upon Peter the role of leadership of the Church. Here we will pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. We go on to Capernaum, know as the Second City of Jesus. Our tour will show us the ruins of the second century Synagogue (John: 6). In this city Our Lord called a number of the Apostles, he taught the Good News of our Redemption and He cured many people of their afflictions. We conclude our visit with HOLY MASS in the CHURCH OF ST. PETER, built directly over the ancient structure of the House of Peter. After a lunch break we ascent the heights of Mt. Tabor, where Jesus took Peter, James and John and was gloriously Transfigured in their sight. The afternoon is concluded at the shore of the Sea of Galilee, where we embark on a boat ride, remembering the scripture passages of Jesus and His apostles on this lake. B & D TIBERIAS
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10 - Today we drive south through the fertile Jordan River Valley until we reach Jericho, the most ancient city in the Holy Land, which is written about in both the Old and the New Testaments. On our drive through we see the foundations of this city, Elisha's Spring and Mt. Temptation. Then we reach the shore of the Jordan River a short distance before it empties into the Dead Sea at a spot that commemorates the scene of St. John's Baptism of the Lord. Here we renew our own Baptismal Promises. Then we make a stop at the Dead Sea itself, the lowest spot on earth. We can even take the opportunity for a dip in these mineral rich waters. Driving up to Jerusalem, but before arriving into the Holy City, we will stop at Bethany, home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus, to celebrate HOLY MASS in the CHURCH OF ST. LAZARUS. In Jerusalem we check in to our hotel and have dinner. B & D JERUSALEM FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 - Traveling a short distance south of Jerusalem, we arrive in Bethlehem. We begin our visit in the countryside at the Shepherds Fields of Boaz, remembering the angels' glad tidings to the shepherds. We celebrate HOLY MASS in a GROTTO OF SHEPHERDS FIELDS. Within the Town of Bethlehem we go to venerate the Holy Grotto of the Nativity, as well as the Manger and the Grotto of St. Jerome. We will also be in the Franciscan church of St. Catherine, scene of Bethlehem's Christmas Midnight Mass. A special experience will be a visit to Bethlehem University, where we will meet students, faculty and its Christian Brothers directors. This is the only Christian University in Palestine. It provides higher education to both Christians and Moslems. Our lunch will be served by their hotel management faculty. Time permitting, we will stop at a Bethlehem store that offers olive wood religious carvings and many other items. After dinner we go to the Church of All Nations at Gethsemane for a Holy Hour with an opportunity for Confesssion. B, L (lunch) & D JERUSALEM SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12 - We go to the sacred Jewish Temple area, the Western Wall or Wailing Wall, where prayers are offered up at these remaining holy stones of the glorious second temple. We are aware that now the only structures standing on the Temple Mount are the Moslem Shrines of the Dome of the Rock and Mosque el Aqsa. We drive along the walls of the Old City to Mt. Zion, and we celebrate HOLY MASS IN THE CHURCH OF ST. PETER IN GALLICANTU. This church is built over the spot where Jesus was held in the dungeon of Caiphas' house, and is the site of St. Peter's triple denial of Our Lord. After Mass we visit the nearby traditional site of the Upper Room, remembering the Last Supper, Easter Sunday night and Pentecost Sunday. Nearby we see Dormition Abbey Church that honors the passage of Our Lady from this life to Heaven. The latter part of this afternoon is free for our own pursuits. B & D JERUSALEM SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13 - This morning at the Summit of Mt. Olives we visit the Chapel of the Ascension and the Church of Pater Noster. Walking the Palm Sunday Road, we visit and celebrate MASS IN DOMINUS FLEVIT CHURCH. There, too, we have a wonderful panoramic view of the City of Jerusalem. We continue down the road to the Garden of Gethsemane and visit the Rock of Agony Church there. This afternoon we enter the Old City of Jerusalem at St. Stephen's Gate where our first stop is at the Church of St. Anne and the Pools of Bethesda. Next we make the Way of the Cross, carrying a wooden cross along the streets and among the markets and shops as Jesus did on His journey to Calvary following the Via Dolorosa. We enter the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and within the church we visit Golgotha and complete our devotions at the Sacred Tomb of Jesus. B & D JERUSALEM MONDAY, OCTOBER 14 - Early this morning, with the Franciscans chanting the common hymns, we celebrate MASS AT THE TOMB OF JESUS. Then after breakfast we drive to Ben Gurion Airport for a flight to Rome, where we clear Italian Customs and board a motor coach to our hotel in the Eternal City located very close to Vatican City, arriving in time for dinner. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15 - We celebrate HOLY MASS in the BASILICA OF ST. JOHN LATERAN this morning. This church is actually the Cathedral Church of the Bishop of Rome, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Its richly decorated interior is awe-inspiring with beautiful mosaics and its massive statues of the Twelve Apostles. After Mass we have the rest of the day free for our own activities. Our bus will transport us back to the hotel, but as it drives through the center of Rome, some may want to depart from the bus to begin their own exploration. Much can be discovered about Rome by walking this city of ancient history. The Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona await our exploration. Ancient Rome with its Coliseum and Roman Forum beckons. ROME -- the Center of the Roman Empire and the C enter of the Church! Shopping also could be our interest. This evening we can sample delicious Italian cuisine on our own. B ROME WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 16 - This morning we drive to the southern edge of Rome to St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of Rome's four major basilicas. Before entering, we pass through a huge courtyard and are struck by a marveloous mosaic on the freize above the main entrance. The nave framed by 80 granite monolith columns leads us to the Tomb of St. Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles. We will celebrate HOLY MASS in the BASILICA OF ST. PAUL. Later this morning we return to our hotel, and will again have time for our own pursuits. Some may want to spend time at the always fascinating Basilica of St. Peter and the Vatican Museum. Maybe an ascent to the top of St. Peter's will be your quest. The reward is a fantastic view of Vatican City and Rome. Some may want to obtain permission for a very special tour - the Scavi (excavations) beneath the Basilica. It is a very interesting archeological tour of the remains of the Constantine Basilica built in the fourth century, and it ends at the very Tomb of St. Peter. This request is best made by you directly to the Office of the Vatican Scavi bye-mailing to scavi@fsp.va and writing well in advance of our pilgrimage. We suggest that it would increase the chances of success in making a reservation if you give two possible dates and times when you write. Good dates would be October 15 and October 16 and from 12:00 Noon and later. When you write they ask you to include: Exact number of participants, names, language requested and the date(s) preferred. This evening we will conclude our pilgrimage with a festive dinner of fine dining with wine included at a restaurant nearby our hotel.
