We recognize our responsibility to give worship to God, reverence to all people, respect to all creation and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Acknowledging our own brokenness and our need to hope, we seek to be a forgiving and welcoming community committed to service by the sharing of life and love with all, and working together to make peace and justice a reality in our world. Strengthened by the presence of God in our lives, we undertake all of this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Alleluia

Holy Spirit Catholic Church December 10, 2017 From The Pastor s Desk Have you ever done any painting? I don t mean the kind that we think of when the name Leonardo da Vinci comes to mind. I just mean ordinary painting painting a window sill or a chair, or even a house. Well if you have ever done this kind of work you will know that often the most important part of the job is not the actual applying of the paint. Often the most important part of the work is the preparation. If the surface to be painted is not properly prepared then you might as well forget about dipping your brush in the paint can. If you go ahead and put on an unprepared surface, it will only last for a short time and then it will start peeling off or bubbling or give you some other unpleasant effect. You need to either sand or clean, or scrape the surface so that when the time comes for the paint, it will go on easily and stay on. Preparation is all important. In fact, in most areas of life, preparation is very important. If we skip that step it can often lead to disaster. Think of a person who has visited you several times. Each of those visits was different. Perhaps for some of those visits you weren t quite ready to receive your visitor. You may have been distracted with something or other and found yourself restless or inattentive when your friend was with you. Or maybe you can remember one of those visits when your readiness made all the difference. You were able to fully present and truly felt at one with your friend. When John the Baptist calls for a straightening of our roads, he is inviting us to repentance inviting us to change anything in our lives that is keeping us from receiving Christ fully into our lives. Repentance is the preparation that is so necessary for a wonderful celebration of Christmas. But it s not an easy thing. It just doesn t happen on its own. Above all it calls for a deep honesty with ourselves. Selfdeception is one of those things that we often hinder us from receiving Christ. We seem to have lost the ability to deal with our guilt; denial is rampant in our world. No one wants to take the blame for anything anymore. We have analyzed ourselves to death, giving excuses for every action of ours; shifting the blame to others, the environment, the Church, the government, our school systems, the food we eat, etc. It s true that our behavior is affected by many things, but as Christians we cannot hold the opinion that we have no freedom left. We are not just a big bag of unconscious motives and every time we do something, the cause is somewhere in that bag. That kind of thinking reduces us to being much less than the wonderful human beings that God created us to be. John did not preach condemnation but Good News a message of hope. He came to bring deliverance deliverance from our own sinful tendencies. May the Lord help us as we continue to prepare our hearts to fully and warmly receive Christ into our waiting!
