Diocese of Scranton Catechist Awards 2016 Office for Parish Life Catechists Recognized on Catechetical Sunday; Commissioned for Ministry Catechetical Sunday is celebrated annually on the third Sunday in September in parishes across the United States. This year, Catechetical Sunday falls on September 18, the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The theme for 2016-2017 is: Prayer: The Faith Prayed. Catechists in the parishes of our diocese are commissioned for their ministry as they begin a new year of faith formation with children, youth and adults. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis explains, This year s theme invites all the baptized especially catechists and Catholic school teachers to devote themselves to a deeper study and practice of prayer, for their own spiritual good and for the good of those they serve. The Diocese of Scranton recognizes this generous contribution of time and talent, and offers several Catechist Awards based on years of service.
