January 2003 To: National Mailing Recipients From: Office of the National Secretariat Re: National Mailing Blessings and Happy New Year to you and your families! E-mail National Mailings As an ongoing effort to cut expenses at the National Office, we would like to e-mail our National Mailings to as many recipients as possible. This will reduce our mailing costs and manpower, copying costs of each National Mailing. If you currently receive our National Mailing via the U.S. Postal Service but are also able to receive it electronically, please contact the National Office as soon as possible. Let us know your email address and we will notify you via email whenever a National mailing is sent. You may contact us by telephone at 214-339-6321 or email us at: nationalcursillo.center@verizon.net Our National Mailings are automatically sent to Region Service Team Members and Diocesan Secretariat Lay Directors. Please note however, our Mailings are now posted on our website at: www.cursillo.org When there is a new mailing the National Office will e- mail those on our list to let them know a new National Mailing is now posted. These mailings are available to anyone interested in reading them. If you are aware of any new cursillistas interested in receiving an email notice of a new mailing, there is a one-time setup fee of $15.00. Some examples may be including your entire Secretariat, School of Leaders Members, Newsletter Editors, etc. Please pass this information on to them. Affiliation Fees Invoices were mailed in December for this year s 2003 National Affiliation Fees. If your diocese has not received an invoice, please contact us. The amount due is $400.00 and is payable by January 31, 2003. We thank you for your prompt response. Secretariat Minutes We would like to remind our Diocesan Secretariats to send a copy of their Secretariat Meeting Minutes to their local Bishop. This keeps your Bishop informed on what the Cursillo Movement is doing in his Diocese. As we are a movement of the Church, all our efforts are to serve the Church. By our Bishops receiving Secretariat minutes, they are more aware of our efforts to evangelize our environments and our commitment to serve his diocese and the Church. Review Pastoral Plans and By Laws The beginning of the year is a good time to review Diocesan Pastoral Plans and set goals for this year. The National Office has a handout to help Secretariats plan and review their Pastoral Plans. Please contact the National Office if you need a copy of the Guidelines for Reviewing Pastoral Plans. Also at this time, each Diocese should review their By-Laws (or Articles of Operation). A copy of your Pastoral Plan and By-Laws should be sent to your Local Bishop, if you have not recently done so. Evangelization Walk Mark your calendars for our 2 nd Annual Evangelization Walk on June 7, 2003. Start planning now to participate in this event. It is an excellent event to build community and bring to light our Cursillo Movement within our Dioceses. Our response last year was very positive. Cursillistas enjoyed the time together and found it a fun, spirit-filled opportunity. Some started their Walk at Church with a Mass, some ended their walk at a Church with Mass, some said prayers (as they walked) for those people who had pledged support, some held a small social at the end, and some went directly home after completing their miles. In addition to raising an awareness of our mission as Catholics to evangelize, the Walk also provides a way to raise funds for the Cursillo Movement. Some Dioceses reported raising over $5000.00 from their Evangelization Walk last year. The money collected from the pledges is distributed as follows: 40% Local Cursillo Diocese 40% National Office 5% Region 5% Cursillista who collects most pledges 10% Local Diocesan Bishop The funds raised can help Dioceses cover increasing costs and also allow Dioceses to set up Scholarships for Cursillistas to attend Spiritual Retreats, Regional Meetings and our National Encounters. Attached to this mailing is a sample pledge form that can be used asis or modified for your Diocese. In order to help your diocese facilitate an Evangelization Walk, we have listed some information to help in your planning. How to Organize an Evangelization Walk Planning ahead is important. Begin with the approval from your Diocesan Secretariat. Since several cursillistas are needed to help coordinate various areas of the evangelization walk, the Secretariat could appoint a coordinator for the event. This person would be responsible for coordinating all aspects of the evangelization walk. It would also be a good idea to appoint four to six more volunteers to be responsible for the following areas: 1. Logistics - choose location, map route, number of miles. 2. Authorization from governmental body for the walk and security (if necessary). 3. Finances - collect all pledges. 4. Publicity - publish information in Newsletter, announce at gatherings, distribute flyers, etc. 5. Parish publicity - inform local parishes of the event (optional). 6. T-shirt organizer - order, sell, distribute (optional). The Evangelization Walk is scheduled each year on the Saturday before Pentecost Sunday. Dates of future walks: June 7, 2003; May 29, 2004; May 14, 2005; June 3, 2006; May 26, 2007 National Encounter Cincinnati This year s National Encounter is being held July 17 20, 2003 at Xavier College in Cincinnati, Ohio. The cost is $250.00 per person if your registration is received by May 15 th, 2003. After that date the cost will go up as indicated on the attached registration form. The facilities are far and above some of the best we have ever had. We will be using state-of-the-art equipment and the atmosphere will be wonderful. National Mailing January 2003 2

This year s Encounter will follow the format that was used in Mallorca in 1994 during their 50 th Anniversary celebration of the very first Cursillo de Cristiandad Weekend held at Cala Figuera in 1944. During that celebration, Cursillo leaders from throughout the world went to Mallorca to hear the Conversations of Cala Figuera. There were ten topics that were discussed during these Conversations of Cala Figuera and they reflected the various aspects that were taken into consideration by the founders as they went about listening to the Holy Spirit and studying various aspects of mankind, the Church and the world. One of the ten speakers will be Jesus Valls, President of the Secretariat in Mallorca, Spain. He has been grouping and studying with Eduardo Bonnin for many years. Simultaneous translation will be available for all of the talks and there will be group discussion time after each of the talks. The format and talks are new to our National Encounter. We anticipate a large turnout and we urge your prompt response to this deadline to insure your place and minimize your costs. Please circulate the attached registration form to the cursillistas in your Diocese. It is also available on our website. Be sure to include this information in your Diocesan Newsletters as quickly as possible so cursillistas can plan ahead. Spain Pilgrimage In preparation for our 50 th Anniversary of the Cursillo Movement in the United States of America, we have decided to hold a Pilgrimage each year up to 2007. The Pilgrimage is to Santiago de Compostelo, the site of the first pilgrimage of our founders. It also includes Cala Figuera the site of the first ever Cursillo de Cristiandad Weekend (1944), Palma de Mallorca, Madrid and God-willing a luncheon visit with Eduardo Bonnin, the founder of Cursillo. The pilgrimage is limited to 70 participants and is tentatively scheduled for October 23 31, 2003. The cost will be approximately $1600.00 - $1800.00. Please notify cursillistas of this planned pilgrimage. A form is attached to this mailing for those interested. The form needs to be returned to the National Office as soon as possible. Perpetual Palanca We encourage all dioceses to offer Perpetual Palanca for the work of our Cursillo Movement. This effort was started by Lou Robbio several years ago and must continue. If you have not started perpetual palanca in your diocese, please try to begin this year. There are many ways to accomplish this. We ask dioceses that currently offer perpetual palanca for the movement to share how they started. We will share the stories in future Mailings and in our Ultreya magazine. Prayer and sacrifice is the lever that changes hearts and environments. The Cursillo Movement is moving with the grace of the Holy Spirit. We thank you for your continuing prayers and palanca for the work of this Movement. Some of the items we are working on this year include: updating our Region and National Workshops, Updating our Spiritual Director s Manual, and revision of the Three-Day Manual. We ask you to continue to pray and offer palanca for the entire Cursillo Movement. May we serve our Church as the Holy Spirit guides us. National Mailing January 2003 3

The Cursillo Literature Copyright Law is still in force Just a friendly reminder that the publication of Cursillo literature without a written permission from the National Office, is prohibited. The official website of the National Secretariat of the Cursillo Movement in the United States of America is the only website allowed to publish the booklet The Cursillo Movement: What Is It? Other websites should link to the National Website in order to have access to this printing. Articles about the essence, purpose, strategy and methodology of the Cursillo Movement should be used internally only (i.e. the School of Leaders) and therefore their dissemination and publication elsewhere are strongly discouraged. Only official translations of Cursillo literature (English, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese or any language), which are approved and published by the U.S. National Cursillo Office, are allowed for quotes with proper references and should be used wisely and restrictively. The above stipulations aim at helping our Cursillo Movement maintain its authenticity and integrity in order that we Cursillistas are able to effectively carry out the mission of Evangelization that our Catholic Church has entrusted to us.
