Faucher July 2 13 th Sunday in Orderly Time 2 Kgs 4: 8-11, 14-16; Rom 6: 3-4. 8-11; Mt 10: 37-42 The Gospels for today, and in the weeks to come, are the apostles going to school to learn about what Jesus says and what he means. This education comes in three forms. The first is direct teaching, as in today s Gospel. The second is in events, such as the coming feeding of the five thousand and the third is by parables, which Jesus used a lot of in Matthew s Gospel. The first reading, as it will all summer, takes up the Gospel theme and will come from a variety of books. In the second reading Paul calmly goes through his famous theological dissertation in the letter to the Romans. This letter has influenced modern Protestant writers more than any other for the past one hundred years. In a couple of weeks we will look at the Letter to the Romans in more detail. We have to keep in mind that Matthew is writing his Gospel for the Jewish people (unlike Luke who is writing for Gentiles). The Jewish people revered the prophets, and when Jesus says that prophets and righteous men should be treated with respect, this strikes a strong cord with the young apostles. The practical story of receiving a prophet is the first reading from the second book of Kings, about the woman of influence in Shumen who gives the prophet Elisha a special room. She and her elderly husband are given the reward of a son and heir. This story would have been well known by the Jewish people. Also well known was the story of the prophet Elijah and the widow of Zaraphet who is pictured in the painting above the altar here in Saint Mary s. We today do not have these two great prophets as a major part of our spiritual lives, and that is too bad. They were very much a part of the spiritual lives of the Jewish people in the time of Jesus. They were both very important, and Elijah is my absolute favorite prophet and favorite person in the Old Testament. If I were to choose a new name today, it would be Elijah. Fr. Tom (Elijah?) SAN IGNACIO MASS Join the Boise Basque Community for the annual San Inazio Mass at St. John s Cathedral, July 29 at 7pm. The Onati Dancers will perform in honor of St. Ignatius Loyola before Mass with a procession and dancing at 6:40pm and after Mass at the base of the Cathedral steps. During the Consecration the dancers will perform a dance dating to the 16th century in honor of the Body and Blood of Christ.
