Spirit vs. Flesh SPIRIT 4151*pneuma, pnyoo'-mah; from 4154; a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze; by anal. or fig. a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by impl.) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:-ghost, life, spirit (-ual, -ually), mind. (Comp. 5590.) The Greek word PNEUMA was translated Spirit or spirit 21 times in Romans 8. ROM 8:1 [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. ROM 8:2 sin and death. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of ROM 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. ROM 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. ROM 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. ROM 8:10 And if Christ [be] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin; but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness. ROM 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. ROM 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. ROM 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. ROM 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. ROM 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.

ROM 8:23 And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the redemption of our body. ROM 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. ROM 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what [is] the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to [the will of] God. In contrast, PNEUMA was only used once in Romans 7. ROM 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the oldness of the letter. FLESH 4561*sarx, sarx; prob. from the base of 4563; flesh (as stripped of the skin), i.e. (strictly) the meat of an animal (as food), or (by extens.) the body (as opposed to the soul [or spirit], or as the symbol of what is external, or as the means of kindred), or (by impl.) human nature (with its frailties [phys. or mor.] and passions), or (spec.) a human being (as such):-carnal (-ly, + -ly minded), flesh ([-ly]). VCount Strong partial Greek definition for words rendered flesh 2 2907 kreas:-flesh. 126 4561 sarx:-carnal (-ly, + -ly minded), flesh ([-ly]). The Greek word SARX was translated flesh 12 times in Romans 8. ROM 8:1 [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. ROM 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. ROM 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. ROM 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

ROM 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. ROM 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. ROM 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. ROM 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. This same Greek word was also translated carnally and carnal twice in Romans 8. ROM 8:6 peace. For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and ROM 8:7 Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. The Greek word that was translated minded in Romans 8:6 and mind in Romans 8:7 is PHRONEMA which means (mental) inclination or purpose. The Greek word SARX was also translated flesh 3 times in Romans 7. ROM 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. ROM 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but [how] to perform that which is good I find not. ROM 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Test Review According to Ephesians 4:24(KJV), your born again spirit is created in what two things? What should your identity be determined by? Can sin cause a Christian to lose his or her salvation? Can a mature Christian who has fulfilled the requirements mentioned in Hebrews 6:4-5 renounce Christ and still be forgiven? Based on what Paul said in Romans 6, is it still in our nature to continue to live in sin? What is the valve that can block or release what is in your spirit? What is the perfect representation of who you are in the spirit? According to Hebrews 10:2, should we ever be conscious of our sin? How does faith come according to Romans 10:17? God relates to us based on what? Will sin cause your heart to become hard toward God? Are your spirit and body joined together? Know 1 John 2:20(KJV) What part of a person becomes born again? According to Hebrews 9:12 and lesson 3 on pg. 11, did Jesus obtain eternal redemption for us from our sins-past, present, and future? What three parts make up every person as stated in I Thessalonians 5:23?

According to Romans 12:3(KJV), what has God dealt to every man, what do we have? According to 1 Corinthians 2 and your syllabus, who has enlightened the word to us? According to Hebrews 6:4-5, how many items are mentioned that make people accountable for renouncing their salvation? Originally, did your spirit and soul work together, based on how God created it?
