Page 2 FROM THE PASTOR Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Shine on Sunny. Shine on! Nine years ago, we brought her home in a crate. We never imagined the home she would establish in our hearts. I am reminded of the words of Genesis this morning, God made the wild animals, each according to its kind. And it was so. God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, Let us make human beings in our image (Genesis 1:25) On Thursday night, July 21, Sunny, our nine year old golden retriever laid her head down in Marsha s palm and went to sleep. And our hearts are broken.the creative hand of our Heavenly Father has gently touched every single animal! He is the God who makes the cat purr, the bird sing, the cow moo, the pig oink, the snake hisss.and yes, a lively golden smile from ear to ear for anyone who would take a moment to scratch her belly. The order of creation reminds us that the calicos and chimpanzees, the giraffes and the goldens were given life---just moments before man was given a breath of life. Is it any wonder why our pets seem so much like people to us? Should it surprise us when they hang their head when they are disciplined, or wag their tail when they are praised? Almost human. Almost. Thursday night we lost a member of our family. We will pour over pictures and video. We will decide what to do with her toys and her bowl. We will cherish the memories of play and fun. Yes, I will regret the days I told her to Go, play in traffic! For all of us who have welcomed animals into our home and our hearts.we will give thanks. Give thanks for the Lord of all creation who made each one according to it s kind.sunny, you were one of a kind. Unique. Loved. Celebrated. Precious. I m not surprised remember who made you! While Pastor is attending a continuing education event in Chicago, it will be our pleasure to welcome Pastor Richard Hafer to the pulpit on Sunday, August 14. Pastor Hafer represents Food for the Poor Ministries in south Florida. Advent raised an offering to build a home for a family in the Carribean. Join us for a special Sunday School presentation following the a.m. worship time! We welcome Pastor Hafer to Advent! WE EXTEND OUR PRAYERS AND SYMPATHY to the family of Reverend Charles Koons. Pastor Koons led our congregation in worship while Pastor Matt was away. Pastor Koons went to rest with the Lord the week of July 17. Pastor Koons most recently served as visitation pastor at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Augusta. May the Lord comfort his family and friends. Chris Rasmusson Chris is preparing to sell her home and relocate to live with her daughter and son in law, Elizabeth and Jonathon in the Atlanta area. May the Lord guide you each day Chris! We share our sympathy and prayers with the family of Lois Wendelboe who rests with the Lord. A memorial service was held at Advent on July 5. Please pray for Mary & Art, and their extended family. Lois was a dear child of God who reflected the grace, joy and mercy of her Lord each day. May she rest at the feet of her Lord this day! We remember the family and friends of a dear member of Advent, Helen Plumley. A time of prayer and remembrance took place at the Thomas Poteet Funeral Home on Thursday, June 9 th. Please continue to remember Jim and Barbara and their extended family in prayer. Helen loved her Lord, her church and her family dearly! May she rest with her Savior. Thank You With gratitude, I would like to thank my church family for being there at the death of my mother, Lois Wendelboe. For those who visited her during her time in the nursing home, you brightened up her days. For those who prayed for me, you gave me strength. For those who shared your stories, you made me feel that I was OK. For those who made food, you eased my concerns and welcomed my family. For those who helped with the memorial service, you listened to my heart. The sorrow would have been so much more difficult to bear without all of you. May God bless your service to Him. Page 9

Page 8 Service Board News CHURCH COUNCIL Advent s Servicer Board continues to collect different items in support of various organizations and ministries. These items include plastic grocery bags, eye glasses (to include reading glasses), food items for the GA food pantry (especially canned meats and women's feminine hygiene products), toiletries, popular paperback books, and winter coats. Anything you can help with is appreciated by the recipients. Donations can be placed on the Service Board table outside the adult Sunday school room or the wheel barrow in the Narthex. Our Lutheran ld Relief project for summer and fall 2011 is filled school bags. The complete list is posted on the collection boxes in the Narthex and Sunday school rooms. The back-to-school sales make this an affordable project to fill as many bags as we can collect. Please consider picking up a few extra items as you shop for your child. This year we will again sponsor an Angle Tree for children up to 12 years of age. This is a fun event and gives far more joy to the givers than words can describe. The registration begins in October, the tree goes up in November, ad the presents are distributed in December. Gap food pantry continues to operate in site of the heat and little or no air conditioning in the building. On an average your Service Board volunteers 50 hours a month. A special thank you to our faithful volunteers: Donna Meisner, Tracy Torrence, Gary Lawrence, Shirley man, Donna Carlson and Pastor Matt. A huge THAK YOU goes out to Zachary and Brittany Hubble who collected four big boxes of canned food. The shelves were stocked at the beginning of the morning and two hours later they were nearly empty. All our youth are wonderful and these two made a special effort to help others, truly demonstrating what Jesus would do to help the poor, needy and homeless. ELCA SYNOD ASSEMBLY REPORT We have posted the reports of our delegates to the Southeastern Synod Assembly in Atlanta GA. We thank Linda Lawrence, Twyla Tuten and Patty Williams for attending and sharing their report with us! Please continue to pray for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. STAFF IN TRANSITION Our executive board and church council will receive an updated personnel policy. We are reviewing job descriptions for office staff. We will be announcing plans in the next few weeks. Thank you for your patience with our office. We will do our very best to meet the needs of the congregation. Many thanks to all who have been assisting us this summer. PARISH EDUCATION PASTOR S BIBLE STUDY---THE POWER OF A WHISPER! Pastor will lead a morning study, 10:30-11:45 a.m. and evening, 7:00- p.m. with worship, prayer & study. Invite a friend. We will discuss the still, small voice of our God! God continues to speak to his children today! Come, explore the scriptures and enjoy a DVD teaching from Pastor Bill Hybels, Senior Pastor of Willow Creek Community Church. *IF YOU NEED CHILD CARE, PLEASE LET US KNOW. This ten week class will begins on Tuesday, September 13th. All are welcome! Page 6 Parish Education Summer Sunday School The summer session of Sunday School will have its final lesson on Sunday, August 7 th. So far, we have had a total attendance of 70 and served over twenty-five different children. Many thanks to those people who made Summer Sunday School possible by taking turns teaching and assisting during the lessons: Carol Billings, Mary Filpus-Luyckx, Any Freitas, Heather Herrmann, Angie Hubble, Sister Barbara Lee McCormick, Jamie Sadenwasser, and Twyla Tuten. Worship Parish Ed (cont) YOUTH ADVENT TEENS 2011 SUMMER WAS GREAT FUN! Our teens give thanks for awesome summer of activity! We were leaders at our Vacation Bible School! Our Summer day camp was overflowing with participants! The retreat to Panama City Beach, Florida changed lives! Our youth group welcomes middle school and high school students! Free Food! Lots of events are coming this fall and winter so stay involved in Sunday School! The Property Board is comprised of members of our church 3ho are willing to donate their time ad talents to maintain our church and grounds. If you are interested in working with us, please see Gary Lawrence or ay council member. -The conversion of the male bathroom located near the choir room to a laundry room should be completed by the time this newsletter is published. The laundry room will be a blessing for the people we host during Interfaith and also for the many who have been hauling the table cloths, dish towels, robes etc. back to their homes to wash. The female bathroom located next door will now be unisex bathroom. Please remember to knock before entering and please lock the door while in use. -A total of 31 windows in the admin area, choir room and Sunday school wing will be replaced with energy efficient windows. The new windows will be vinyl with double pane insulated glass which is argon gas filled and have lowe coating. The windows will be installed by Barrett Window and Door and are Energy Star rated. The six windows in the Fellowship Hall will have storm windows installed with lowe coating. Work should be completed by mid August if not sooner. -The outside entry doors to the nursery and the Adult Sunday school room were replaced as the frames on the old doors had rotted and could not be repaired. In addition, the fascia board and ceiling above the outside entry to the nursery was repaired. -Bids are currently being obtained to replace the carpeting in the Sunday school wing with tile.
