2 3 Presidents Message Presidents Message We are pleased to report that for the last several weeks we have been having planning mee ngs to maximize the use of our facili es for rental purposes. Through social media, our name is now prominent in the community. We have a panel of caterers who are interested in working with us to book affairs. We are op mis c about these prospects, and will keep you updated. Thanks to our VP of Educa on and Youth, Rochelle Maltz, for planning the Adult Educa on Series with Rabbi Sam Kastel. They have been well a ended and now can be followed on Facebook, and have interac ve par cipa on. Thanks to Roy Moskowitz for videoing the series. The next session will be March 19 (from 10:00 AM ll noon). The topic will be Preparing for Passover. We hope you plan to join us. On Friday night, March 3, hundreds of Synagogues across the con nent celebrated Shabbat Across America. This was a special opportunity to experience Shabbat by having a tradi onal Friday night meal, and socializing with our community family. This year marked the 21st anniversary of the event. Special thanks to the Moskowitz, Zorfas, Chaplin, Fenster, and Rachman families for sponsoring this event. With spring approaching, comes Passover, our redemp on from slavery in Egypt, and all the wonderful tradi ons that comes along with it. Thanks to our PTA, especially Alexis Prussack for organizing our Miss Chocolate Passover Candy Sale. This directly benefits our Hebrew School Program. We are pleased to report that we are having a catered Second Seder on Tuesday, April 11th, at 7:30 PM, at a cost of $36.00 per person for adults and $25.00 each for children and teens. The seder will be led by Rabbi Sam Kastel, and will tell of our Exodus from Egypt with story and song, using explanatory Haggadahs provided by NJOP. Your input is valuable to us. Please let us know what programs you would like to see us provide. A happy and healthy Passover to all. Yasher Koach to our Youth Director, Bruce Monte-Leon and to all his volunteers who helped shop, schlep, pack and deliver Mishloach Manot for Purim and to all those who par cipated in this Mitzvah. It is a very important fund-raiser for our Youth Program Ruth Greenwald Arlene Rachman Co-presidents

4 5 Rabbi s Message Men s Club Message The Talmud in Tanit teaches us Mishenichnat Adar Marbim B Simcha - when [the month] of Adar arrives we should add in joy/happiness. Rashi teaches us that the reason for this is because the month of Adar were days of miracles for Klal Yisroel. It is also considered an auspicious/lucky time for the Jews. The Talmud states that therefore if one has a court case he should schedule it to take place during the month of Adar when his mazal/luck is good. Joy is a feeling, and we can t always evoke a feeling whenever we want. There are many very real tzurus that can get in the way of us feeling joyous. So in Adar we need to look a little harder to find our joy. For anyone watching the Super Bowl this year it seemed pretty clear that by halftime we knew who was going to win. I admit that I didn t bother to watch the end of the game. Boy did I regret it. The New England Patriots pulled off an incredible upset. They flipped the script. Many Patriots fans said it was a miracle. My theology does not include God getting involved in football games but it sure was a reminder of how quickly things can turn around. Sometimes G-d performs grand, obvious, miracles such as the splitting of the sea and sometimes the miracles are harder to see like the miracles of Purim in the Scroll of Esther-- the Megillah -- in which there are a series of miracles that culminate in an incredibly unlikely outcome: A nation that was doomed one minute is victorious the next. In this month of Adar, may we have victories in all areas of our lives. Granted there can be only one costume that wins on Purim, and I promise not to mix up the winner. May we have victories in our personal healings, victories in our spiritual growth, victories for Israel on the world stage, victories for our congregation, and the ultimate victory of redemption so that we can have our seder in Jerusalem, instead of singing L shanah Haba B Yerushalaim. Shalom I would like to thank everyone who attended Sunday morning services on February 5 for the Worldwide Wrap. NY1 came to CBJ and filmed the Rabbi, Dr Mushnick and myself with our Tefillin on. Tefillin is one of the most important Mitzvot of the Torah. It has been observed and treasured for thousands of years, right down to present day. The Torah mentions it more than once. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they should be a reminder between your eyes. We have a number of events coming up in the near future: (1) On Sunday, April 23rd we have Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle Holocaust Remembrance Day. Candles will be delivered to each member of CBJ. Included with the candle is the prayer to say when lighting the candle. We need assistance in delivery of the candles. If you can help please call (718) 494 0509 or email at Brimmer911@aol.com. (2) The Federation of Jewish Men s Club of which CBJ is a member is having a Stock Market Challenge. You select 5 out of the 50 stocks listed. If you have the best increase in the price of the stocks you chose from ( April 23 to June 2, 2017) you could win $1,200. A donation is only $25 for each portfolio (5 stocks) you want to play. Click here to join us http://fjmc.org/stock. A portion of your donation will go to CBJ. (3) The FJMC Convention Washington DC will be at Marriott Crystal Gateway Hotel in Crystal City VA. The Conven on will be held from July 19 to July 23 2017. (4) The Women s League, the parent organiza on of Sisterhood will hold their Conven on immediately therea er. Joel Brimmer

6 7 Hebrew School Message Hebrew School Message The students of CBJ Hebrew School are stepping up their tzedakah collec on this school year.
