Profiles Each week, we profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive mannerto help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we spotlight Talya Beker aka Junko Takano aka Superwoman. TCS: Let s start by wishing you a double mazel tov for your upcoming anniversary as well as graduating MT school. Talya:Thank you. TCS: Aside from English and Japanese do you speak any other languages? Talya: About 12 human languages and a few animal languages? Just yesterday I picked up 2 new languages while waiting at the checkout line at T&T. TCS: Your feats of strength and bravery are legendary yet most people don t connect the fact that the Junko and Talya are the same woman because you are so quiet and humble. Talya:The Japanese are taught to not self-promote. We believe our actions should speak for us and that team or company or family success is much more important that individual success. TCS:And your accomplishments certainly do. Let s begin with your Origami national championship when you were still in elementary school. The most amazing aspect was that you won by folding rocks. Talya:The competition was fierce and I knew I needed to be original. Besides folding paper is so simple. TCS:Your fitness workouts are hard to fathom. It is known that after you work out the gym needs to take a break. Talya:I do need to monitor the treadmills for signs that they are having trouble keeping up. TCS:You seem so sweet at shul. It is hard to imagine the fear you can invoke in others when disrespected. But you invoked fear from the very beginning when you roundhouse kicked the ob-gyn delivering you and put him in traction for months. Talya: Well he slapped me and there is never an excuse for hitting a woman. TCS: They say the bogeyman looks for you under his bed before going to sleep and is it true that the central nervous system is nervous because of you? Talya:If you treat me with respect there will be no problems. If not, then well let s just say if I can make an onion or a happy meal cry I can probably make you cry as well. TCS: So if the TCS Editor was making disparaging remarks about you he might be in some trouble? TCS Editor: (trembling) I swear I didn t. Honest, honest, please don t hurt me (running down the hall) TCS: Do you feel as if you have anger issues? I mean who else can slam a revolving door shut? Talya:No but sometimes I forget my own strength. And I really think that people often misunderstand me. Like the time I was running after the Bulls in Spain. TCS: Running after the Bulls? You mean you scared the bulls? Talya: As I said I previously, I speak many languages including Bull. I was lost in Spain and when I saw a Bull I ran after it to ask directions and the next thing you know I am chasing all these frightened bulls. I meant no harm. It was a simple misunderstanding.

TCS: Like the time you lifted the SUV in front of Sue s market? Talya: A no parking zone is a no parking zone. TCS: I am still trying to figure out how you were able to light a fire rubbing two ice cubes. Talya: Oh that, it was Shabbos candle lighting time and we were out of matches. A Balaboosta has to do what a Balaboosta has to do. TCS:You claim you are not good with numbers yet you managed to count to infinity twice Talya:Just counting my pushups and sit-ups. TCS:Your preferred martial art is Kendo. How did you get started? Talya:In Japan it is mandatory to participate in after school activities. I tried golf but since it doesn t take all that long to shoot 18 shots in an 18 hole course I had time to try something else. And chess was boring as I basically only needed a rook and a pawn to beat the local Grandmaster. TCS:Has Kendo had a big impact on your life? Talya:Very much so. I had a visionary junior high teacher who was confident we could be the top team in Japan despite being from a small town. He made us believe in ourselves and our school achieved his goal of winning a national championship. A modern day Hoosiers if you will. TCS: Does Kendo continue to influence you to this day? Talya:Absolutely. My ability to focus, my sense of dedication, and my desire to achieve goals through hard work and not take short cuts was all instilled through Kendo. Judaism has provided me the framework to carry forward those concepts in a spiritual and holy manner. TCS: If you grew up in a small town in Japan then how did you make it to North America? Talya:I swam. Front crawl mainly with a little backstroke. TCS:No I mean what was your motivation to come to North America? Talya:The first time was to make a new life for myself. In our culture the oldest son takes over the home and has responsibility for caring for the parents. My brother and his family remains in the home I grew up in and which has been in our family for many generations TCS: And the motivation for the second time? Talya: I had to swim back to get the rest of my luggage. TCS: And how did you get interested in Judaism? Talya:Some Israeli friends introduced me to Kabbalah and I volunteered for roughly 5 years while learning about the spiritual side of Judaism. When I was ready to convert I knew that I needed to learn the practical side of Judaism so I joined a mainstream Orthodox shul and studied for over a year with a great teacher. TCS: Your husband is surely lucky to have married you. What did you see in Steve? Talya: A project. TCS:A project? Talya:As you can tell I like challenges and while there is work to be done he does have a good heart.

TCS:How did you meet? Talya:I was walking out of shul one day and when he saw me he just drooled. Didn t say a word, just drooled. Now I am used to guys drooling but it is usually out of fear. This was different. It was pathetically romantic. TCS:Do you roundhouse kick or use your sword Steve when he gets out of line? Talya:I just have to give him that look to let him know he is in trouble.i have taught this look to many of the women in the shul. Just ask their husbands. TCS:Do your kids share your superhuman abilities? Talya:We only worry that they develop superb mensch like qualities. TCS: Aside from your current studies, what other degrees and experience do you possess? Talya: I have a degrees in physical education, teaching, graphic design, fitness training, nutrition, archaeology, kayaking and have worked as a mashgicha and owned a kosher café in L.A. TCS: Weekly condiment question. What is okay on sushi? Talya: A little bit of soy sauce not too much but it has to be Japanese not Chinese soy sauce. A smidgeon of wasabi is okay and I will look the other way if you dab a little spicy mayo. TCS: Your role in the Great Wall of China? Talya: Had a chance to play live Tetris with bricks thrown from a plane and got a little carried away. TCS: And what about your being the inspiration to add the element of fear to the period table of elements? Talya: I am not into Chemistry. Why do you need to blow up people when using your hands is tidier? TCS: We heard your house was broken into last week but when the alleged robbers realized it was your home they washed the dishes, took the garbage out, folded laundry, repainted the deck and left a tip. Talya: More logical explanation than my husband doing any of that. TCS: Finally,President Re-elect Stuart is afraid of you so he is in hiding for the week.you are President for the week so what changes can we expect to see? Talya: I would get rid of the cleaning staff and have everybody including adults and children be responsible for cleaning up. We should treat the shul as a holy sanctuary and the best way to do that is to take care of it ourselves and not leave it up to others. TCS: No way you can get the members to go for that. Talya:I did not know what a janitor was until high school. All the way through elementary and junior high the students cleaned the entire school daily including the bathrooms. And I promise you our school was cleaner than a 5 star hotel. We just have to convince the shul that it can be done. Or show them my sword that would work too. TCS: I have to say this was a treat. You are the greatest since sliced bread. Talya: Sliced bread, one of my better inventions.
