A member of the Central Highlands Cluster Ministry St George s, Trentham 9.00am St Mary s, Woodend 11.00am 13 th August, 2017 The Assumption of Mary, Mother of Jesus We acknowledge the Jaara Jaara people, of the Woi wurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung language groups, the custodians of this land where we gather. We pay our respects to their elders past and present and pray for reconciliation.

GATHERING IN GOD S NAME Sentence for the day When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, so that we might receive adoption as God s children Galatians 4.4-5 Gathering Hymn Mary mother of our Lord 1.Mary, mother of our Lord, Alleluia! Bore the true and living Word. Alleluia! May we, too, consent today And, with her, our God obey. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! 2.When she did not understand what would come of God s command, still she served the Holy One; may we, too, in faith go on. 3. Mary, listening, took her part, treasured all things in her heart; so, with Mary, may we find Jesus wisdom, strong and kind. 4. Mary, weeping, at the cross, loved her son and knew the cost; may our love, as hers, be strong though the way of pain be long. 5. Mary knew the Spirit s power in the church as wind and fire; may our church be open still to the Spirit s gracious will. The Lord be with you. And also with you The Prayer of preparation (page 119 of the prayer book) Almighty God

Hear, O Israel. The Shema (page 120 of the prayer book) The Confession and absolution Let us humbly confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident that God will raise us up. Merciful God Lord Jesus, you are mighty God and Prince of Peace: Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are Son of God and Son of Mary: Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, you are Word made flesh and splendour of the Father; Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The Gloria (page 121 of the prayer book) Glory to God in the highest Let us pray Loving God, who chose the virgin Mary, by your grace, to be the mother of our Lord and Saviour: fill us with your grace, that in all things we may accept your holy will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

MINISTRY OF THE WORD A reading from the book of Isaiah, chapter 61:10-62:3 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. For the word of the Lord thanks be to God. The Song of Mary (The Magnificat, Luke 1:47-55) My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord: my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour

Who has looked with favour on his lowly servant: from this day all generations will call me blessed. The Almighty has done great things for me: and Holy is his name. God has mercy on those who fear him: from generation to generation. The Lord has shown strength with his arm: and scattered the proud in their conceit, Casting down the mighty from their thrones: and lifting up the lowly. God has filled the hungry with good things: and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his servant Israel: to remember the promise of mercy, The promise made to our forebears: to Abraham and his children for ever. A reading from Paul s letter to the Galatians chapter 4 verses 4-7 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Father! So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. For the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Hymn 323 Born in the night

Alleluia, alleluia My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour. Alleluia The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke, chapter 2 beginning at the 1 st verse In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. For the Gospel of the Lord praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ The Sermon The affirmation of faith (page 123 of the prayer book) The Prayers of the People The Greeting of Peace We are the body of Christ His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn 302 The Angel Gabriel *a collection to assist the mission of God in this parish will be taken up during this hymn We give thanks for the gifts Blessed are you Lord God of all creation Blessed be God forever THE GREAT THANKSGIVING.for ever praising you and singing Holy, holy, holy Lord God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the Highest

Blessed is he who comes in the Lord s name Hosanna in the Highest in songs of never ending praise Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen With our hearts set on the kingdom and our hands open to serve, we pray as Jesus taught us Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. The Sending out of God s people God our Saviour, your word proclaims our salvation which we taste in the bread of life. Grant us the humble obedience we see in Mary that we, too, may respond as willing servants and bear your Word to our world Most loving God... you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit.

The Notices Final Hymn 161 Tell out my soul The Blessing and Dismissal Christ the Son of God, born of Mary, gladden our hearts by his coming to dwell among us, and fill us with joy and peace; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen. On this, the day that we celebrate the Assumption of Mary, the mother of Jesus, we will say the Angelus Prayer after the dismissal. If you wish to stay for this prayer you are welcome to do so. The Angel of the LORD declared unto Mary, And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary, full of grace; the LORD is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.* Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Behold the handmaid of the LORD. Be it done unto me according to thy word.

Hail Mary, full of grace; the LORD is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.* Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. And the Word was made flesh. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary, full of grace; the LORD is with thee: blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus.* Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we might be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray, Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O LORD, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. ***some thoughts from Rev. Mel This week has been challenging. I ve felt varying degrees of sadness and anger listening to the beginnings of what is already fast becoming, a vicious campaign relating to marriage equality. I make no secret of my feelings on this. I will be voting yes (it s not an actual vote more like a survey), because I feel that LGBTQI people should have the same rights as I do, that LGBTQI people are made perfect in the image of God, that LGBTQI people are my neighbours and therefore it is an absolute commandment of Jesus to love them. I have no intention of trying to persuade any of you to vote in a particular way we each are being asked to make a decision on this issue and we must each vote according to our own ideas.

What I would say is that, as Christians, we do have to show love in everything we do. So, I encourage you to extend friendship and not judgement, to show your neighbour that Christians take no pleasure in tearing people down or hurting them, that Jesus never asked for someone s credentials before he welcomed them he just welcomed them. We all know someone who will be affected by this. Peace and love, Mel ************************ Pew Bulletin Trinity Certificate Are you interested in learning a bit more about faith, the bible, and the church?
