I have submitted my PhD thesis in the month of July 2012 entitled Education in Ancient Magadha: A Study of Gurukulas and Mahāvihāras under the co-supervision of Prof. Deepak Kumar from Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies (ZHCES) and Prof. Vijaya Ramaswamy from Centre for Historical Studies, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The present archaeological narrative brings ancient Magadha to the centre of educational history analysis. This micro research explores the origin, growth and development of unorganized/gurukula/brāhmaṇical and organized/mahāvihāra/buddhist education system in ancient Magadha covering periods during 1000 B.C. to 1000 A.D. A meeting for defending my doctoral dissertation will take place in March 2013 as the external examiners have submitted their reports. The degree will be conferred by April 30 th 2013. This archaeological and historical narrative reexamines the glory of Nālandā formulated by nationalist historians as an international university, which was the center of diffusion of knowledge in the world when Europe was passing through the Dark Ages. This multi-disciplinary study explores the socio-economic and religious roots of origin and growth Nālandā Vihāra and later its transformation into Nālandā Mahāvihāra as a centre of Buddhist learning and teaching institution enlightened whole Asia. It also provides insight into the day-to-day educational and functional life of the ancient Nālandā University with curriculum, teachers and students. 2
