Week 7 God is Completely Pure God Is Holy Obtain and Prepare Before Class Lab coat Fog machine (optional) Sixteen-ounce or larger soda bottle with the cap Large nail A container to catch water Piece of wire Cotton ball Ammonia (baking soda mixed with small amount of water will work, just not as well) Vinegar Cotton swab Old, dull pennies Paper cups Lemon juice Paper towels Microchip or picture of one (page 9) Provided in the Kit Lab glasses Lab coat Eight sheets of goldenrod paper Balloon Bible Point God is completely pure. Bible Verse: The Lord is upright; He is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in Him. Psalm 92:15 Bible Passage Psalm 24:3-5 II Samuel 6 Overview The most referred to attribute in the Bible is holiness. When we talk about God s holiness, we are referring to his complete purity. God is totally separated from evil. He does not have one blemish. Because He is perfect, we can trust all His other attributes such as love, justice and sovereignty.

God is Completely Pure Week 7 Dr. Beaker Lab Demonstration Lab Glasses Lab Coat Erlenmeyer, Erlenmeyer! (Looks all around, getting progressively agitated.) Where is that man? I can t ever find him. Erlenmeyer! (Have someone dressed as a lab assistant keep showing up behind Dr. Beaker, being careful not to be seen.) Oh, that assistant! He has made a mess in the lab and, true to form, just left it. You should see the lab. There are test tubes lying all over the tables. Chemicals have been spilled on the floor. What a mess! It was so clean this morning. Spotless! But then Erlenmeyer started spilling things and not cleaning the spills. Before long, it was a disaster. Enough about my lab. I ll find someone to clean it up. Today, I am running a very important test on my unknown. I am looking for the attribute of holiness. What does it mean to be holy? Let me give you my best scientific definition. Holy means completely pure. Something that my lab is not right now! Pardon me, but I ve got to get this lab cleaned up. Erlenmeyer, where are you??? (Dr. Beaker leaves, frustrated) Pop Bottle Leak One liter plastic pop bottle with the cap Large nail Water A container to catch the water Poke a hole on the side of the bottle close to the bottom using the nail. Use your finger to cover the hole while you fill the bottle with water all the way to the top. Screw the cap on. Take your finger off the hole, very slowly, building suspense with the children. Are you ready for the water to come rushing out?? (Water should not come out) Hey, what happened? Why isn t it leaking?? Now, unscrew the cap. (Water should start flowing out) Sometimes we are like the bottle. We seem perfect on the outside. However, inside we might be hiding anger, jealousy or lies. Just like the bottle sprung a leak, when we are hiding sin, it will find us out. God never has any leaks. He is perfect, holy. Because He is holy, He wants us to live pure lives. When we spring a leak, we need to ask God to forgive us and purify us. Goldenrod Paper One piece of goldenrod paper Cotton ball Ammonia (baking soda mixed with small amount of water will work, just not as well) Vinegar 2

Week 7 God is Completely Pure Dip the cotton ball in the ammonia and write the word SIN on the goldenrod paper. The word should appear in red on the paper. (It will eventually react with the acid in the air and starts turning back, so don t take too much time with the explanation.) When we sin, we make a blemish on our clean heart. The yellow paper is an example of a pure heart. The word sin made a blemish on it. How can we get rid of sin? (Give children a chance to guess) By asking Jesus to forgive us of our sin. Has Jesus ever sinned? (No, He is holy meaning He is without sin.) Take another cotton ball and dip it in the vinegar. Rub the vinegar over the word SIN. It should go back to yellow. When Jesus forgives us our sin, our hearts are pure again. Just like the paper has been washed of SIN! Wire in Balloon : Wire coat hanger or 18-gauge wire Balloon Blow up a balloon to medium size and tie. Find the soft spot at the bottom of the balloon. Stick the wire in there. Push the wire through the top of the balloon (by the knot). To get the wire through the top of the balloon, put your index finger and thumb on either side of the spot where you want the wire to come out. Sometimes our life seems like this balloon. We mess up and a wire sticks through our lives. But when that happens, God is always there. He loves us and wants us to repent of our sin so he can heal us and make us whole again. Lab Experiments Experiment 1 Clean Pennies Old, dull pennies Paper cups Lemon juice Paper towels Put a penny in a paper cup. Pour some lemon juice into the cup. Make sure the penny is completely covered. How would you describe how your penny looks? (Dirty, dull, old) We are going to leave the penny in the lemon for 5 minutes and see what happens. (Move the children to the next experiment. After they have completed the experiments, let them return and finish this one.) What does the penny look like now? (It should be brighter.) The acid in the lemon juice cleaned the penny of all the old stuff on it. Who cleans us? (God) Does God ever get dirty and need to be cleaned? (Never, He is always pure.) Experiment 2 Oil and Water Cooking oil Clear glasses of different color of water (color the water with a few drops of food coloring) Clear, tall container 3

God is Completely Pure Week 7 Let the children experiment pouring different combinations together in the clear container. What did you notice about how the liquids mixed together? (They should notice that the oil did not mix with the colored water) Just like the oil and the water would not mix, God cannot mix with sin. Because He is holy, He cannot be around sin. Experiment 3 Changing Paper Goldenrod paper (cut into 3x5 pieces) Baking soda mixture (from lab demo.) Cotton swabs Paper cups Vinegar Repeat the experiment done during the demonstration except let the children do the experiment. By using cotton swabs instead of cotton balls, you can use smaller sheets of paper. kind of ark. This ark was called the Ark of the Covenant. A long, long time before David lived, there was a man named Moses. Do you remember stories about him? Perhaps you remember that he was the one that was hidden in a basket in the Nile River. He was also the one responsible for leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. Later, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. One of the things that God had Moses do was to make the Ark of the Covenant. It was a beautiful box-shaped object that held the Ten Commandments, a jar of manna and Aaron s rod. There were some very special rules about who could move the Ark of the Covenant. When David became king, the Ark of the Covenant was kept at someone s home. David wanted to bring it to Jerusalem. He constructed a special place for it. As he was preparing to bring the Ark to this place, he wrote a psalm. Listen carefully to it. I Samuel 24 Bible Story David and the Ark or the Covenant None How many of you have ever heard of the ark? Most of you probably thought of Noah s ark, the big boat that God commanded Noah to build. But today we are going to talk about a different Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not set his mind on what is false, and who has not sworn deceitfully. He will receive blessing from the Lord, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Psalm 24:3-5 David knew that to move the Ark of the Covenant and to go before it in the big procession, he would have to be blameless before God. He knew that God is a holy God. He will not tolerate sin in our lives. David had sinned many times in his life, however, he had asked for forgiveness. Because of this, David could stand blameless before God. David truly knew the deep joy that 4

Week 7 God is Completely Pure comes from being forgiven for really bad things in your life. At last, the big day came. David went with his people to the home of Obededom and brought the Ark to Jerusalem, also known as the City of David. There was a great celebration as the Ark made its way to its new home. the city, Michal had looked out of her window and saw him dancing and leaping before the Lord. The scriptures tell us that she was filled with contempt for him. When Michal saw David, she made fun of him and let him know she was not pleased with what he had done. But David told her he was willing to act like a fool in order to show his joy in the Lord. After going only six steps, the procession stopped and waited while David made a sacrifice. Then, David danced before the Lord with all his might. He took off his kingly robes, wearing only a linen type cover. As the Ark of the Lord was moved there was much shouting and blowing of trumpets. Can you just imagine what it looked like and the excitement in the air? David was so excited he could not contain himself. He had to dance before the Lord. David became known as a man after God s heart. It was because of moments like these. He truly loved God and wanted to worship Him. He did not care what anyone thought. He did not care about whether he looked silly or not. All he cared about was being in God s holy place. He wanted to ascend to the mountain of God. He wanted that more than he wanted to appear kingly. So, who do you act like: David or Michal? Are you willing to do anything to please God or do you care more about what others think? The only way to live a holy life is to seek to please God and to let Him transform you. You cannot live a holy life and worry about pleasing people. You must choose: will you be a David and seek God with all your heart or will you be a Michal and seek the world s approval? Prayer Give the children time to think about the question posed at the end of the story. Pray that they will completely turn their lives over to God. If you feel led, this would be a good time to present the plan of salvation. Also, for those children who have already made a commitment, this is an opportunity to help them go to the next level in their relationship with God. How bad do you want to know God? How bad do you want to please Him? Are you willing to be made fun of at school or in your neighborhood because of your faith in God? After David brought the Ark into the special tent that he had prepared for it, he sacrificed offerings. Then, he returned home. His wife, Michal, came out to meet him. She was not happy. When David had led the procession into Object Lesson/Modern Day Story Microchip or picture (page ) How many of you have ever seen a microchip? It is really small (show the microchip). 5

God is Completely Pure Week 7 The microchip is the brains of the computer. It is extremely delicate. There are factories that make these microchips. However, these factories are very different than most factories. They must be super clean. There is absolutely no tolerance for any kind of dirt or dust. If a piece of dust were to get inside a microchip as it was being made, it would ruin it. The people that work in the factory wear special white lab clothes. They have special systems for air. The walls, floor and every part of the factory must be sparkly clean. You could say that the factory must be pure. Dirt and a microchip factory cannot go together. It is the same way with God. Sin and God cannot go together. Because He is holy, he cannot tolerate sin. It goes against His very nature. Our memory verse today says that there is no wickedness in Him at all. God wants us to become like Him. He wants us to live lives that are pleasing to Him. He wants us to live holy lives because He is holy. 6

Week 7 God is Completely Pure Time Stretchers Candles Craft Miniature craft clay pots Tea lite candles Glue or glue guns Ribbon Sharpie markers Glue the candle into the clay pot. Decorate the outside with ribbon, wrapping it around the top of the pot. Write the following verse around the pot: God is light, in Him there is no darkness at all. I John 1:5 Discuss with the children that darkness refers to sin. With God, there is no sin, He is only light. Memory Verse The Lord is upright, He is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in Him. Psalm 92:15 Bucket of smooth rocks (find these in a garden store) Sharpie marker On each rock, write a word from the verse. Mix up the rocks in the bucket. Let each child take turns picking a rock. They should work together to put the verse in order. Once the verse is in order, take turns removing a rock. Say the verse each time the rock is removed. Balloon Volleyball Game 10 Balloons one color 10 Balloons of a different color Blow up the balloons and tie them. Mark off an area similar to a volleyball court. Make the size of your playing area dependent on the number of children you have. The object of the game is to try to get all the same color of balloon on your side. The first team to accomplish this wins. To begin the game, mix the balloons up and place some of each color on both sides. Divide the children into equal teams. Assign a color that each side should try to get. On go, the children should start throwing or batting the balloons to the other side. They must stay within the boundaries marked off. After the game is completed, discuss how the wrong color balloon brought impurities onto each team s side. Jelly Beans Snack White jelly beans Plastic cups One black jellybean per person Pour a handful of white jellybeans in each cup. Drop a black jellybean in the cup 7

God is Completely Pure Week 7 and mix it up. Have the children try to find their black jellybean and remove it from the cup. Discuss how the black jellybean was like sin. The cup of white jellybeans was made impure (not all white) by the addition of the black jellybean. To make the cup of jellybeans pure again, the black jellybean (sin) had to be removed. 8
