Page 3 Dear Friends in Christ, Thank you for the many messages you send me encouraging me to preach at all Masses. Because we have a very active deacon and deacon candidate community, allow me to explain why I have them do so much preaching. First, for the ladies in the main office it makes communication with the deacons and scheduling them and their ministry so much easier. When the deacons are at services, they know they must preach. Secondly, over the years my brother priests have often severely criticized our deacons for their poor preaching. Preaching, like all skills, improves with practice and evaluation. As you have noticed, all our deacons are now giving excellent homilies. Thirdly, and more seriously, it is of some concern that in the near future, the Diocese of Boise is going to have a reduced number of active priests, ensuring that the bottom is going to fall out with the priesthood in Idaho. Our deacons are going to be called upon, with their wives, to exercise even more ministry leadership in the diocese. So as we pray for more priest vocations, we must prepare for what could happen in the event of an extreme and severe priest shortage in Idaho. No one knows the future, but it is secure in the hands of our deacon community. Love and hugs, Fr. Johnny A message from Fr. Faucher The Gospel today is the fourth and final section of chapter 5 of Matthew, and the next section of the Sermon on the Mount. The writing structure that Matthew used puts much of Jesus teaching into that sermon. The Sermon on the Mount is all of chapters 5, 6 and 7 of Matthew, ending with verses 28 and 29 of chapter 7: Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and his teaching made a deep impression on the people because he taught them with authority, not like their own scribes. We will look at just a little of chapter 6 next week, and then begin the season of Lent. Today s Gospel, as well as the matching first reading from the book of Leviticus, are difficult to hear. Leviticus says, Take no revenge and carry no grudge against any of your people. And Jesus says, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. It sounds so easy but it is so hard. I love the literary device that Matthew uses, the repetition of the phrase, You have heard it said.... Then he gives some examples about justice, hatred, revenge, etc. What he is rejecting are common teachings from the scribes, Pharisees, and other teachers. As is true with all of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is teaching the total opposite from these professionals. These readings are equally as important and timely now as they were two thousand years ago. Pope Francis makes it abundantly clear that all of humanity is our brothers and sisters, and the United States bishops, in a February 10 th statement, said that any policy of the United States on refugees cannot favor one religion over others. This echoes the plaque in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of our church where the Catholic Church s teaching is stated: all people have the right to religious freedom. This comes from the Declaration of Religious Freedom, 1963. The Sermon on the Mount is a message that cannot be ignored. Su amigo y servidor ~ Padre Jesús Camacho One of the best questions our young people ask is: Why do I have to behave? The answer is given by the Word of God on this Sunday: "Be holy because your God is holy" (Lev 19:12). In the Gospel, Jesus reaffirms it with beautiful and profound words: "Love all, as your heavenly Father loves all... Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Mt 5: 38-48). This is the goal of every baptized person: to be holy. Jesus is our model. Your friend and friend ~ Fr. Jesus Camacho
