REVELATION is NOT a Mystery TEACHER S GUIDE FUTURE: The Tribulation REVELATION 10:1-11 OPENING PRAYER We take a few moments to prepare for the most important thing we can do as God s child. If you have trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior and substitute sin bearer, simply name your sins to God in preparation for Bible study. Dear Heavenly Father, Your Word is our guide. Your Spirit is our teacher. May we take what we learn from Your Word and use it in our lives to overcome the world, the flesh and the devil: opponents of our goal to live virtuously until we join You in heaven. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen. ** IMPORTANT NOTICE AT END OF LESSON. REVIEW Vocabulary 144,000 Witnesses 144,000 witnesses (12,000 from each Jewish tribe) are sealed by God, therefore protected through the Tribulation. They evangelize on earth during the first half of the Tribulation. They run to the hills in obedience to God s command when they see the image of Antichrist in the Temple and transfer alive from the Tribulation into the Millennium at the separation of the sheep and goats. This is a specific number of Jewish witnesses. The Great multitude An unspecified number (too numerous to count) of martyred believers killed during the first half of the Tribulation: a mixed group of Jews and Gentiles, but predominantly Gentiles. Some are described as being under the altar in heaven at the mid point of the Tribulation. They are joined later by other martyred believers of the Tribulation. Summary Consistently between the sixth and seventh in each of three sets of Tribulation judgments God placed a pause. For the most part the pauses contain comforting information providing relief from tedious descriptions of judgment. The pause in the seals detailed the final destination of Tribulation believers, both Jew and Gentile (REVELATION 7:1-17). Before looking at the pause in the trumpets, let s recall the difference

between the time lapse principle and pauses in Scripture. DIAGRAMS DEMONSTRATING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TIME LAPSE PRINCIPLE AND THE REFRESHING PAUSE. TIME LAPSE PRINCIPLE 1st Advent A period of time between two events where information is ignored or not seen. 2nd Advent Old Testament prophets did not see the Church Age between Christ s two advents. REFRESHING PAUSE A pause, interlude or parenthesis between two events used to provide information on an entirely different subject. SEVEN JUDGMENTS: 1 2 3 4 5 SIX (pause) SEVEN A pause occurs between the sixth and seventh judgment in each set of Tribulation judgments. RIGHT HERE EVERY TIME I. PAUSE IN THE TRUMPETS Chapter 9 described the Sixth Trumpet judgment, which is the second woe. Chapters 10 and 11 record the pause between the Sixth and the Seventh Trumpets. The end of Chapter 11 returns to the report of the Seventh Trumpet, which is the third woe. (REVELATION 11:15-19) The pause in the trumpets is the longest and the most involved. We covered all 7 trumpets as a unit and return in this lesson to the trumpet s pause. In keeping with the pause in the seals, it contains encouragement and comfort for believers.

REVELATION is NOT a Mystery TEACHER S GUIDE FUTURE: The Tribulation CONSISTENT PAUSES IN THE JUDGMENTS PAUSE PAUSE PAUSE SEALS:6 TH 7 TH TRUMPETS: 6 TH 7 TH GOBLETS:6 TH 7 TH THE PAUSE IN THE TRUMPETS COVERS FOUR SUBJECTS. Subject 1 A STRONG ANGEL: the King s Heavenly Herald Subject 2 JOHN, EATING THE LITTLE BOOK Subject 3 JOHN MEASURING THE TEMPLE Subject 4 TWO WITNESSES: the King s Earthly Heralds The strong angel in subject #1 is the Heavenly Herald announcing the coming of the King of kings. Subject #2 covers John, eating the little book according to the angel s instructions. John demonstrates the worthlessness of the Tribulation temple by measuring it and declaring it worthless in subject #3. Subject 4 describes the King s Earthly Heralds during the final days of the Tribulation. A. FIRST SUBJECT Revelation 10:1-11, Subject 1: THE KING S HEAVENLY HERALD. 1. THE KING S HEAVENLY HERALD REVELATION 10:1 And I saw another (another angel of the same kind, but different from the angel sounding the sixth trumpet in Chapter 9) strong

(powerful) angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the rainbow was upon his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars (or columns) of fire... Display the angel symbol. His description teaches us a great deal. 2. SIX DESCRIPTIVE PHRASES Use visuals to teach this segment. Build the picture as each item is mentioned. Angels are invisible to us. Perhaps this angel has taken on a visible form. At any rate, each phrase teaches us a great deal about this angel. Let s consider what we learn. I The King s Heavenly Herald, referred to as Another strong angel Not the same angel from Chapter 9 and not one of the seven trumpet angels, but a different high ranking angel related to judgment. II From heaven The angel comes from God. The strong angel is one of the elect angels clustered around God s throne. III Clothed with a cloud A cloud suit emphasizes the angel s heavenly home and source of authority. The strong angel is closely related to heaven. Jesus Christ uses clouds as His chariot. (PSALM 104:3). He catches His bride, the Church, up into clouds at the Church s Rapture. (I THESSALONIANS 4:17). He returns with clouds at the end of the Tribulation. (MATTHEW 24:30; DANIEL 7:13. It seems when Christ travels between heaven and earth He uses a chariot cloud. In the case of this very grand angel, clouds seem to be his uniform. If you want to know what well dressed angels wear sometimes they wear clouds to demonstrate their close connection to heaven. IV Crowned with a rainbow A rainbow is the cap that goes with the uniform of clouds. The rainbow speaks of God s faithfulness.

REVELATION is NOT a Mystery TEACHER S GUIDE FUTURE: The Tribulation The strong angel represents the Faithful Witness, Jesus Christ. V Face as the sun The angel s face reflects the righteousness of God. He has come from the presence of the glorified Christ from whom he received his instructions. The strong angel reflects and represents the righteous One, Jesus Christ. The same words appear in REVELATION 1:16, describing the face of our Lord. The angel s face like the sun signifies a close relationship with Christ. However, this angel is not Jesus Christ. He is not that light, but reflects that light. (JOHN 1:8) He is a top-ranking angel. EXODUS 34:29-33 records the face of Moses shinning after being in Christ s presence. The same is true of this angel. The strong angel is an agent representing the righteous One, Jesus Christ. VI Feet like pillars of fire Feet like pillars (columns) of fire speak of Jesus Christ as judge and protector of believers. The strong angel represents the perfect Judge and Protector, Jesus Christ. The phrase Feet like pillars of fire emphasizes two points: 1) the strong angel is associated with judgment and 2) God places a wall of fire around His children to protect them. 3. SUMMARY It is impossible to separate the intimate relationship of the strong angel from the Lord of heaven. THE ANGEL IS CHRIST S SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OR ENVOY, BEARING CREDENTIALS, WHICH PROVE HIS HIGH POSITION. HE IS THE COMING KING S HEAVENLY HERALD. Death and destruction might reign upon the earth now, but soon One will return and reign in perfect peace. Today, many claim they have a peace plan that will work. Well, God has a perfect plan for peace and His plan is guaranteed to be successful. In the pause between the seals, God reveals the final destination of believers in the Tribulation.

In the pause between the trumpets, God introduces the heralds of the King (one heavenly herald and two earthly heralds). It fits logically, without wild theories, and is consistent with the organization of the book of Revelation. 4. ANGEL HOLDS SOMETHING, DOES TWO THINGS AND HEARS SOMETHING REVELATION 10:2, 3 And he (the strong angel) had in his hand a little book (scroll) which was open. And he placed his right foot on the sea and his left on the land; and he cried out with a loud voice, as when a lion roars (not a lion, but as a lion, loud, ferocious sounding: a noise of fear); and when he had cried out, the seven peals of thunder uttered their voices. a. First, the angel holds something: he holds a little book or scroll. Point to the open scroll symbol. Obviously, this is a scene close to the end of the Tribulation. The angel holds a little book. It is probably the scroll described in REVELATION 5:9 as the title deed to the earth with the plan of redemption written all over it. It was sealed then. Now, it is open. Now, it is now called little. We can only assume it is smaller, because many judgments have been carried out and removed from the record: only a few judgment reports remain. b. Second, the angel does two things. 1) The first thing the angel does: he places one foot on the sea and one foot on the land. The sea represents Gentile nations. The land represents Jewish nations. By placing his feet on the earth and the sea, the strong angel declares the Lord s right to rule His creation: Jews, Gentiles, earth and sea. His message is to the whole earth. The angel closely associated with God the Son, reclaims earth for the true and final Ruler: the Lord Jesus Christ. 2) The second thing the angel does: he cries with a loud voice like a roaring lion. The lion is the king of beasts. His roar is loud and clear. There is no avoiding or mistaking his message. The strong angel is in charge, but

REVELATION is NOT a Mystery TEACHER S GUIDE FUTURE: The Tribulation his authority comes from the Lion from the tribe of Judah, the King of kings: Jesus Christ. c. And, finally, the angel hears something: he hears seven thunders. When the angel cries out, seven loud peals of thunder are heard. What have we learned about thunder? Thunder speaks of judgment. Thunder attracts attention to the voice. Combining the thunder, the number 7 and the voice we learn the full and complete message of coming judgment has been delivered. This angel appears at the end of the Tribulation. 5. STRANGE COMMAND REVELATION 10:4 And when the seven peals of thunder had spoken, I (John) was about to write and I heard a voice from heaven saying, Seal up (forget and don t tell anyone else) the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken, and do not write them. John is in the process of recording information communicated by the seven thunders when the Holy Spirit interrupts his note taking. a. God forbids John to record what the seven thunders say. IT IS STRANGE TO COMMAND SEALING PART OF A BOOK NAMED REVELATION. IT IS AN OXYMORON! b. Definition of oxymoron. 1) A phrase in which two words of contradictory meaning are used together for special effect, (for example, wise fool or legal murder, or sealed revelation are all oxymorons). Sealing = closing to prevent disclosing or unveiling information. Revelation = disclosing or unveiling information In view of the definition of revelation, (unveiling, laying bare, or showing forth), it is hard to understand why anything is concealed or hidden in a book by that name. God must have an excellent reason for requiring secrecy. We can only suggest that knowledge of these thunderous proclamations would have a negative effect on God s children...at least during the Church Age.

6. STRANGE OATH REVELATION 10:5, 6 And the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land lifted up his right hand (the hand of authority) to heaven (recognition of God s authority, a salute to Jesus Christ) and swore by him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things in it, And the earth and the things in it, And the sea and the things in it, (recognition of Christ as Creator) that there shall be delay no longer. (Time is up!) THE ANGEL MAKES A DECLARATION IN JESUS NAME BECAUSE THERE IS NO HIGHER AUTHORITY. THE ANGEL DECLARES, TIME IS UP! THE TRIBULATION IS OVER. 7. SUMMARY The herald angel claiming earth in the name of the coming King swears by the highest authority in the universe and declares the Tribulation has come to an end. It is time for the King to return, claim His Kingdom and rule over His purified creation. Since the apostles were alive, people have asked Where is the promise of His coming? (II Peter 3:3-4; 9). For more than 2,000 years, things have remained the same. Well, they are not the same anymore. Time is up! Here is the fulfillment of His promise. The words there shall be delay no longer confirm the Seventh Trumpet speaks of the second coming of Jesus Christ and describes the end of the Tribulation and the vengeance of God s children. Verse 7 promises a full account of the Seventh Trumpet judgment. It appears in REVELATION 11:15-19. In the meantime, the pause in the Trumpets continues. Show where the Seventh Trumpet fits on the Tribulation timeline. The fact that the Seventh Trumpet describes the Second Advent, lends support to the idea that each judgment represents a different viewpoint or a progress report of the same judgments and do not follow a chronological order.

REVELATION is NOT a Mystery TEACHER S GUIDE FUTURE: The Tribulation 8. TIME LINE CHART 31/2 YEARS 31/2 YEARS Beginning of Tribulation. Treaty signed. Middle of Tribulation. Setting up of Antichrist s Image in the Jewish temple. End of Tribulation. Armageddon. Seventh Trumpet description right before the 2nd Advent. REVELATION 10:7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, (the one who blows the seventh trumpet) when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished (the Tribulation is over) as he preached to his servants the prophets (as God told the Old Testament prophets). a. The first phrase in verse seven in the days of the voice of the seventh angel about to sound speaks of the seventh trumpet. It describes the last event of the Tribulation: the final cleansing of earth in preparation for Christ s 1,000-year reign. b. The second phrase The mystery of God is finished as he preached to his servants the prophets (Verse 7) is a reference to the fact that Old Testament writers had no knowledge of the Church age between the 1 st and 2 nd Advents. The Church Age was a mystery to them. This is the time lapse principle we reviewed at the beginning of this session. For teacher s information, study ISAIAH 53 (for the 1 st Advent report) and ZECHARIAH 12, ISAIAH 63:1-6 (for the report of the 2 nd Advent). There is another mystery with which the world is obsessed. It might be

addressed for older students. What is it the world has the most trouble understanding? The universal mystery is WHY? Why does the Lord let the bad things happen? And especially Why did He let this bad thing happen to me? First of all, Satan is in charge of the world (Eph. 2:2) and he fosters evil and sin. However, there is a need for those who have trusted Jesus Christ as Savior to understand that God has a plan for each and every child and the things God allows to happen to us are part of that plan. Are we willing to live in God s plan? It was the Father s plan for Jesus to go to the cross. Jesus went willingly. Are we willing to live within God s plan wherever it leads? Are you willing to fulfill God s purpose? Do you understand that God has a plan for your life? As God s child, by faith in His Son, we are compelled to live inside and constrained not to live outside of God s plan for our lives, but we can choose to reject God s plan. It is not a wise choice. I want to live within God s plan for my life. I pray you do, too. B. SECOND SUBJECT 1. EATING THE OPEN BOOK (SCROLL) REVELATION 10:8, 9 And the voice which I (John) heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, Go, take the book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the land. And I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little book. And he said to me, Take it and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey. a. The voice which I head from heaven Again, God speaks to John through the strong angel. The angel commands John to 1) Take the book John is an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, a high position of authority for man on earth, yet he still recognizes the authority of this angel. The strong angel is Christ s heavenly representative. 2) Eat the book The strong angel commands John to eat the scroll and John obeys the command. John chews and chews the scroll. John has plenty of time

REVELATION is NOT a Mystery TEACHER S GUIDE FUTURE: The Tribulation to change his mind and spit out the scroll, but he swallows it. b. It will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey. 1) The scroll is both sweet and bitter: sweet in John s mouth because he is God s child through faith in Jesus Christ, bitter where the unbeliever is concerned. 2) The good news of the Gospel is sweet, but when John considers the fate of those who reject the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, (they go to the Lake of Fire with their sins paid for) the contents of the little book become bitter in his stomach. It is never pleasant to think of the final destination of those who will not believe. Still, God s Word is sweet to the believer who is hungry for it. REVELATION 10:10 And I took the little book out of the angel s hand and ate it; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter. c. The angel s prediction comes true. The prophet, Ezekiel was given a similar scroll accompanied by the same instructions: Prophecy. Perhaps God follows certain protocol when directing His servants to begin teaching again. Maybe God requires His prophet to act out the adage that it is sweet to obey God, but a message of coming judgment is bitter. It is true for both John and Ezekiel. EZEKIEL 2:8-3:4. Other helpful Scripture: MATTHEW 11:21-24; LUKE 4:24-27 Also, compare EZEKIEL 2:14 with REVELATION 10:8-11. In digesting God s message, Ezekiel found it sweet to yield to the will of God. Footnote Ryrie Study Bible, New American Standard, p. 1229 2. PROPHECY, AGAIN REVELATION 10:11 And they (angelic voices from heaven) said to me (to John), You must prophecy (teach, predict) again concerning many peoples and nations and tongues and kings. a. The strong angel, representing the Lord Jesus Christ, directs John to continue writing the prophetic book of REVELATION. John obeys. In Chapter 11, John records details of the third and fourth subjects in the

pause between the Sixth and Seventh Trumpets: measuring the temple and introducing two important witnesses. b. At the end of Chapter 11, John describes the Seventh Trumpet judgment and continues to teach or prophecy until the end of the book of REVELATION. JOHN FOLLOWS THE HIGH-RANKING ANGEL S ORDERS TO THE LETTER AND THAT IS SWEET. JOHN TAKES DIRECTIONS WELL. JOHN WAS WILLING TO FOLLOW GOD S PLAN FOR HIS LIFE. CLOSING PRAYER ARE WE? Thank You, Father for John, the human author of the book of Revelation. Thank You that John was in fellowship that Sunday morning on the Isle of Patmos and able to record the message straight from Jesus Christ. Thank You for the privilege and opportunity of studying this unique book through the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit. Thank You, also, for young people who want to learn more about You from Your Word and have the desire to live according to Your plan and purpose. In the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen. **IMPORTANT NOTICE AT END OF LESSON NOTICE FOR TEACHER: Class Activity for next session is more impressive if photos of individual students are used. Photos do not need to be of high quality. If classroom or church has access to a copy machine with enlarging ability, this can be done in class. In that event taking pictures may require an entire class period. The most efficient handling is to take digital or instant pictures in this session, (side view of each student) enlarge on letter sized paper between classes and bring to class next session. If this is not practical for your class, a large drawing symbolizing the soul works well.
