To maintain this grace he invites us in our 1 st reading Be Holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am Holy (Lv. 19: 2). If He invites us to be holy as He is, therefore, it is possible for us to live holiness in our life here on earth. We live in holiness of life if we don t allow any tiny single sin, or any occasions of sin to be committed. All the readings this Sunday will help us to become holy, and to become perfect, if we really desire it in life. Page 6 Our Lady of the Rosary Church Background of the Liturgy Seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time The Gospel today continues the "Sermon on the Mount." Last Sunday, we had Jesus' interpretation of the commandments. He corrected inter-pretations which had almost voided the meaning of the Law, and pro-claimed what the Lord desired of the commands. This theme is continued in today's Mass. The theme is contained in the open-ing words of the first reading: "Be holy because I am holy." It is very human to seek to get even, to want to settle scores, to return in kind for any injuries received. But this is not God's way. The Lord commands us to be holy because he is holy. His holiness is shown in his mercy and forgiveness. God's ways are not our ways. True, the Lord is just. But he is known most perfectly in his lovingkindness, his willingness to reconcile and to forgive. The first reading (from Leviticus) begins what is called "The Holiness Code." The conclusion of today's first reading is what Jesus will call "the second greatest commandment." We are called to love our neighbor as ourselves. In the "Holiness Code," there is a constant refrain: "I am the Lord." In other words, the motive for our seeking the perfection of virtue is because we are called to reflect God himself. Sometimes preachers have contrasted the old law and the new by saying that the Old. Testament God was the God of justice, whereas the New Testament God is the God of love. Today's reading gives lie to this. God in the Old Testament is the God of love and mercy. He calls us to holiness in order that we may reflect his mercy. The Responsorial Psalm refrain reminds us of this: "The Lord is kind and merciful." In the second reading, Paul reminds us that we are temples of the Lord; God's spirit dwells in us. If we could only remember this, we would avoid many weaknesses, sins, and failings. We have great devotion to the Real Presence of the Lord in the Eucharist. But if we could only remember his presence in us, with awe we would seek to live God's life more perfectly. jungle-type vengeance, this would be merciful. But this is not Old Testament (or New Testament) morality. Not only are we not to take vengeance, but we are called to love our neighbor, to forgive offenses, and to try to live as children of the merciful God. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that we are not to live as sinners do. Even tax collectors and other sinners love those who love them. But we are called to love and forgive those who may not love us. This is not natural behavior, but it is divine behavior. A religion which asks little of its adherents is not much of a religion. Our Christian morality is not descriptive but prescriptive. It does not describe what people do; rather it prescribes what God wants us to do. Is this realistic? Perhaps not. We cannot measure up to what Jesus commands us without divine power. But that power is with us. We are not only called to be holy because God is holy. We are also assured of the power of God which will enable us to live this high code of morality. God s grace is always there. We have only to make use of that grace. IMPORTANT PARKING NOTICE!!! As a reminder: there is additional parking on Sunday mornings at the south lot of Washington Elementary School at Date and Union Streets. BUT the gate is locked after the Noon Mass, no exceptions. We have had parishioners going to lunch after Mass and returning to find their car lock in the lot. This is not our lot. This is a courtesy to us from Washington Elementary School. The Gospel begins' with a statement of the "Law of the Talion." This form of morality was originally rather merci-ful. In a jungle morality, the standard of behavior was "blood vengeance." If someone wronged you, you took vengeance on him (and his clan) almost to excess. The "Law of the Talion" tempered this. It stated that you may not do harm to your neighbor who has wronged you except to the extent of the damage done to you. If your neighbor knocked out your teeth, you may not do anything more than knock out his teeth. You may not kill him or take vengeance on him. "Talion" means "such for such." Please, Come to Church Dressed Appropriately! To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantly clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty.
