Pray: Our Father, Wh art in Heaven, hallwed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdm cme; Thy Will be dne n earth as it is in Heaven. Give us, this day, ur daily bread, and frgive us ur trespasses as we frgive thse wh trespass against us, and lead us nt int temptatin, but deliver us frm evil. After we have received the Sacrament f Recnciliatin (als called Cnfessin) and because Jesus Christ granted His Apstles the authrity t frgive sins when He said, Receive the Hly Spirit; whse sins yu frgive are frgiven; whse sins yu retain are retained; (Jhn 20:23) we shuld g int the Cnfessinal t cnfess ur sins. After we experience Gd s lving mercy and frgiveness fr the things we ve said/dne t displease Him, we shuld be willing t share His lving mercy and frgiveness with thers when they hurt us and/r ur feelings. Temptatin: When we g fishing, we put bait (usually a small, wiggly wrm) n ur fishing line t tempt (attract and cnvince) the fish t bite the hk. Thrughut ur lives, the bad angels are always clse by, hanging arund us, ur family members, and/r ur friends t try t tempt (cnvince) us t d (r say) things that Gd desn t want us t d (r say). As we pray the last cuple f phrases in The Lrd s Prayer, we knw and trust that Gd, Jesus Christ, and the Hly Spirit will never tempt us t d r say smething bad, s instead, we ask them t deliver us (prtect us) frm evil. Mrs. Frances PwerPint presentatin als included a handful f phts that, because f the angle at which each pht was taken, wasn t exactly what it appeared t be. A pht f a yung man leaning against a large tree n the edge f a lake s shreline (with the reflectin f many trees in the lake) was actually a pht f the yung man laying dwn n a fallen tree in the midst f many ther trees. A pht f a dad hlding his very yung sn ver the edge f the rf f a multistry building s he culd see the train at the train statin n the grund belw was actually taken at grund level next t the railing arund a large, very detailed mdel train landscape. A crpped, hrizntal (landscape) family prtrait taken near a Christmas tree and in frnt f a large matted picture frame was actually a prtrait f fur peple, nt three peple. The white, hrizntal stripe n the father s winter sweater blended in with the white hrizntal mat n the picture n the wall, making it lk like his face was actually part f the picture n the wall. Viewing the entire vertical (prtrait) pht enables the viewer t see fur pairs f feet standing near the Christmas tree, indicating that there are fur peple standing in the pht. Tday s Bible stry: Elijah cnfrnts the prphets f Baal. (1 Kings 18:16-39) Intrducing King Ahab is nw king. He served as king in the nrthern sectin f Israel in a time when there had been several evil kings, but he was the wrst ne f all. (A Scripture passage frm the Bible: Ahab did mre t prvke the LORD, the Gd f Israel, t anger than all the kings f Israel wh were befre him (1 Kings 16:33). Queen Jezebel is his wife. She was riginally frm Sidn. Peple in Sidn wrshipped a gd named Baal and, after marrying Ahab, she cntinued t wrship Baal. Althugh her husband is king, she made many f the decisins in the land. Of several prphets chsen by Gd at this time, Elijah is the last living prphet f Gd. The picture Mrs. Frances used t intrduce Elijah depicted him standing next t a small stream and birds bringing fd t him. (Remember this image in a cuple f mments!) Definitin f prphet: a persn regarded as an inspired teacher r prclaimer f the will f Gd. (Gd tells them what t d and say, and ut f lve and respect fr Gd, they d/say it. If the peple t whm they are speaking d nt listen, they are ignring Gd s wrds, nt the prphet s wrds.) As this stry begins, because King Ahab and Queen Jezebel have wrshipped ther gds, their land has suffered frm a terrible drught. (A drught is a lng perid f time withut any rainfall during which plants die. The plants can t grw back until it rains again. Many animals and peple dn t have much fd t eat as well. Even thugh everyne in King Ahab s territry was suffering frm the drught, Gd prvided fd fr His prphet, Elijah!) Since Queen Jezebel has rdered that all f Gd s prphets be killed, the practice f wrshipping Baal has becme mre and mre ppular. (Remember: Elijah is the last, living prphet f Gd at the time f this stry.) Gd sent Elijah t speak with Ahab. Ahab said t Elijah, There yu are! Yu re the biggest truble maker in Israel! Elijah replied, Yu are the truble maker! Yu and yur family have disbeyed the Lrd by wrshipping Baal. Call everyne frm Israel and tell them t gather n Mt. Carmel. Be sure t bring the 450 prphets f Baal and the 400 prphets f Asherah wh eat at Jezebel s table. After everyne had gathered n the muntain, Elijah said, (paraphrased) Hw lng will yu wrship mre than ne gd? Yu can t have mre than ne and yu shuld chse the true Gd! I will let yur peple chse and sacrifice a yung bull fr my altar. They shall call n yur gds and I shall call n the Lrd. The Gd wh answers with fire is Gd. (1 Kings 18:24) All f the peple (including Baal s prphets) agreed t Elijah s challenge. Then Elijah said, Yu g first. After building the altar and sacrificing the yung bull, the prphets f Baal circled their altar and prayed, prayed, and prayed sme mre frm mrning until nn. Nthing happened. They hpped (danced) arund the altar. Still, nthing happened. Elijah taunted (teased) them a bit, saying, Call ut luder. Maybe yur gd is meditating r sleeping. They cntinued t pray and began t cut themselves as part f the sacrifice, but still nthing happened. Then Elijah said, Cme here t me. Using twelve stnes (ne stne fr each f the twelve tribes f Israel), Elijah built his altar and dug a trench arund the altar. After arranging wd n the altar, the peple (nt Elijah) picked a yung bull, sacrificed it, and prepared its flesh fr Elijah s altar. Then, Elijah said, Fill fur jars with water and pur it ver the [wd and the bull s flesh]. (Will wet wd burn? N!) He said, D it again (and they did). Then he said, D it a third time (and they did). Elijah wanted t be sure that the peple understd that the fire wuld certainly cme frm ur Lrd, a pwerful and almighty Gd!) When everything was ready, Elijah said, Lrd, Gd f Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be knwn this day that Yu are Gd in Israel and that I am Yur servant and have dne all these things by Yur cmmand. Answer me, Lrd! Answer me, that this peple may knw that Yu, Lrd, are Gd, and that Yu have brught them back t their senses. L and behld! A huge fire was lit n Elijah s altar! The Israelites realized that, even thugh Elijah s altar had been saked with water three times, his Gd the ne, true Gd had lit his altar! The first f each pair f vlunteers was invited t chse which clear cntainer f ingredients he/she wanted t taste. The next vlunteer tasted the ther ingredient. Just in case the campers needed t wash the taste ut f their muth, small bttles f water were n hand. Salt and sugar Vinegar and water Milk chclate and unsweetened chclate The cnsensus: Even thugh things lk alike, they are nt always the same!
