Dear SSFP Parents and Friends, Welcome to 5 th Grade! I look forward to meeting with all of you at Back to School Night in September. In the meantime, please see below for practice over the summer. Math Practice Our online math program, Mathletics, is a great place to help maintain skills and facts over the summer. Your child has his/her password already, and an info page is attached to this packet. It is imperative that you keep up with these skills- 6 th grade math is fast-paced and cumulative. Suggested Use: 30 minutes/2x week Literature Reading Reading and writing are the cornerstones of our education here at SSFP. Furthermore, we know children who read have better reading comprehension, grammatical understanding, and better academic vocabularies. Here are my suggestions for the summer: 1. Read No Talking by Andrew Clements AND at least one free choice book from the list provided. 2. Keep a reading Log- log your minutes and books read over the summer 3. Spend time reading with your child- They are not too old! The more you read aloud together, the more your child hears a fluent reader. This helps them decode multisyllabic words and work toward better fluency. 4. Take the AR tests in August when you get back to school! 25 points are needed each semester in 5 th grade State Capitals By the END of fifth grade, your child will be required to know the location (and spelling) of all 50 states and their capitals. Get started now for a smooth sailing 5 th grade. Apps and games are a great way to practice these! Nicene Creed Attached to this letter, you will find the words of the Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed is the longest prayer that your child will be required to memorize in fifth grade. Again, if your child has a hard time with memorization, they may want to start on this during the summer. 5 th Grade Reading Books- Please purchase: 1. Catholic Prayers: Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
