Cathy Freeman - Answers Cathy Freeman is one of the most well-known Indigenous Australians. She was the first Indigenous Australian to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games (in Canada in 1994). Freeman competed in many championship events throughout the 90s. She was selected to light the torch at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, where she won gold in the 400m event. Freeman retired in 2003 and became involved with many charities.
