I think we can safely say this year has begun like no other! I hope this letter finds you and your family safe. Many of our students, teachers, staff members, neighbors, alumni, friends & family suffered unimaginable losses at the hands of Hurricane Harvey. We hope everyone is ok now, or at least that the process of returning to some normalcy is going smoothly. We are so happy that you re here & can t wait for you to get involved in PTO this year! We may be off to a slow start, but there are lots of exciting events and ways to get involved coming up very soon. We hope to see everyone! Chick-fil-A Fridays & Greyhound Bash are just around the corner, as well as Fall concerts, Homecoming, beautification work days, chaperoning needs for field trips, and numerous other opportunities for which you can volunteer! We love our volunteers! Your help is an absolutely integral part of making this school special and will be very appreciated! The PTO is also planning to bring some new and FUN programming and fundraising to campus this year. New social events, both for students and parents, are being planned to help our families get to know one another better. Watch out for an update on these new events in the next few newsletters! I look forward to working with you. Go Greyhounds! Jennifer Leach, PTO President Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School 10410 Manhattan Drive, Houston, TX 77096
The dark clouds that loomed over Houston in late August came with a thin, but very special, silver lining. The PTO has had the privilege of watching our administration, teachers, and staff rise to the challenge of helping our community faster even than the flood waters rose. MPVAMS teachers immediately mobilized to serve our community-- and recruited parents, students, recent alumni and strangers from all around the country to help. On Friday, Sept. 1, over 150 people descended on nearby Godwin Park to donate cleaning supplies and use those supplies to help clean out & demo dozens of flooded homes in our community. Since that time they have mounted a huge effort to raise funds and supplies needed to help student and teacher families who were affected by the flood and in need of some assistance. The above & beyond efforts of these teachers have been amazing. Our kids are in some remarkable and empathetic hands! If you flooded, are housing a family that has flooded, or have otherwise been adversely affected by the flood, please reach out to the front office if there is anything we can do to help. Teachers have sought to meet clothing and school supply needs, as well as any other needs that we can possibly help with. 2 Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School

Suggestions for Those Who Transport Students: 1. Decide on a meeting place away from the congestion and have your child walk to you. 2. Pay attention at the intersections to avoid pedestrian and vehicular conflicts. ***The City of Houston and HISD know that we cannot limit the crossing activity, but the goal is to have a safer environment in which everyone is aware of their surroundings during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal. ***Please remember to obey all standard driving rules; do not block driveways, do not double-park, and no u-turn. 8 Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School
