Dear Faithful, Tomorrow is the feast of the great Archangel Saint Michael. His name in Hebrew means Who is like to God? and often he is shown in art bearing a shield with the Latin inscription, Quis ut Deus. Who is like to God? It is the battle cry that he roared to defeat the archenemy, Satan, who, overcome by his pride, attempted a rebellion in disobedience against God. In the breviary lessons for this feast, we read this homily from Pope Saint Gregory the Great: As often as anything very mighty is to be done, we see that Michael is sent, that by that very thing, and by his name, we may remember that none is able to do as God does. Hence that old enemy whose pride had puffed him up to be fain to be like unto God, even he who said: I will ascend unto heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God... I will be like the Most High. This old enemy, when at the end of the world, is about to perish in the last death, having no strength but his own, is shown unto us a-fighting with Michael the Archangel, even as says John: There was a war in heaven: Michael and his Angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels. Unto Mary is sent Gabriel, whose name is interpreted The Strength of God, for he came to herald the appearing of Him who was content to appear lowly that He might fight down the powers of the air. Raphael, also, as we have said, signifies The Medicine of God, and it is the name of him who touched as a physician the eyes of Tobias, and cleared away his blindness. Today in our modern world, many rebel against God and the order, supernatural or natural, established by Him. They refuse the sweet reign of Christ the King. We, as faithful Catholics, must promote Christ s kingdom through humility and obedience and raise that battle cry of Saint Michael, Quis ut Deus! In Christo Rege et Maria, Father William Avis Rector of Old Saint Patrick Oratory

Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Introit: (Daniel 3:31, 29, 35) All that Thou hast done to us, O Lord, Thou hast done in true judgment: because we have sinned against Thee, and we have not obeyed Thy commandments: but give glory to Thy Name, and deal with us according to the multitude of Thy mercy. (Ps. 118: 1) Blessed are the undefiled in the way who walk in the law of the Lord. v. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Repeat All that Thou hast done to us... Collect: In Thy mercy, we beseech Thee, O Lord, grant to Thy faithful people pardon and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their sins and also serve Thee with a quiet mind. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, Epistle: (Ephesians 5:15-21 ) Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Brethren, See how you walk circumspectly, not as unwise, but as wise redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore, become not unwise, but understanding what is the will of God. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is luxury but be ye filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to God and the Father being subject one to another in the fear of Christ. Gradual: (Psalm 144:15, 16) The eyes of all hope in Thee, O Lord and Thou givest them meat in due season. V. Thou openest Thy hand, and fillest every living creature with Thy blessing. Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Ps. 107: 2) My heart is ready, O God my heart is ready: I will sing, and will give praise to Thee, my glory. Alleluia. Gospel: (John 4:46-53) At that time, there was a certain ruler whose son was sick at Capharnaum. He having heard that Jesus was come from Judæa into Galilee, went to Him, and prayed Him to come down, and heal his son for he was at the point of death. Jesus therefore said to him: Unless you see signs and wonders, you believe not. The ruler saith to Him: Lord, come down before my son die Jesus saith to him: Go on thy way, thy son liveth. The man believed the word which Jesus had said to him, and went his way. And as he was going down, his servants met him, and they brought word, saying that his son lived. He asked therefore of them the hour wherein he grew better. And they said to him: Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. The father therefore knew that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him: Thy son liveth and himself believed, and his whole house. Offertory: (Psalm 136:1) Upon the rivers of Babylon there we sat, and wept; when we remembered thee, O Sion. Secret: May these mysteries, we beseech Thee, O Lord, provide us with a Heavenly remedy: and purge our hearts from their vices. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God Communion: (Psalm 118:49-50) Be Thou mindful of Thy word to Thy servant, O Lord, in which Thou hast given me hope: this hath comforted me in my humiliation. Postcommunion: That we may be made worthy, O Lord, of these holy gifts: make us, we beseech Thee, ever to obey Thy commandments. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God 3

OCTOBER ROSARY PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH Unto thee, O blessed Joseph, do we fly in our tribulation, and having implored the help of thy most holy Spouse, we confidently invoke thy patronage also. By that affection that unites thee to the immaculate Virgin Mother of God and by thy fatherly love with which thou embraced the Child Jesus, we humbly beg thee to graciously regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with thy power and labor to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful Guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be propitious to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness; and, as once thou rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity; shield, too, each one of us by thy constant protection, so that, supported by thine example and thine aid, we may be able to live in holiness, to die piously, and to obtain everlasting joy in heaven. Amen. To contact Father Avis: 2997 Oak Street Apt. #104 Kansas City, MO 64108 (816) 931-5612 oldstpatrick@institute-christ-king.org
