This year will bring unexpected challenges and exciting opportunities, yet lots of fun! First and foremost, our biggest goal this year will be maintaining our seven year streak of exceeding the previous year s membership drive. We finished the 2016-2017 year with 746 active members and therefore we can expect to have a lofty goal placed upon us by the Department and National Headquarters based on our previous successes. I am confident that we can achieve and exceed whatever goals are placed upon us with the help of our great membership team - headed up by Past Commander and top recruiter in the department last year, Greg Gabry. Our goal is to be 100% renewed by November 11th. Our membership is our strength; it s one of the most important facets of The American Legion. The four pillars stand on a foundation that is created by each and every member s active enrollment in the Legion. My charge to you as members is not only maintain your active enrollment, but to go out and recruit new members. Seek out your neighbors, co-workers, friends and even strangers into becoming members so they can be part of this great organization that helps take care of veterans, their families and our community. As an incentive we are hosting the Early Bird BBQ on Saturday, September 16th for every member who renews their annual dues prior to August 31st. Come out for a great family event with food, drink and a live band. So make sure and renew today so you can join us in the fun! Lastly, some folks have been asking about the Commander s Office Hours on Thursday nights. Given my work schedule, and in an effort to maintain balance with my family and the limited number of hours in a day, it s important to me that I make time for you, the membership. Every Thursday evening from around 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., I ll be hanging around the post to discuss any topics/concerns members may have, and socialize with the Legion family. Of course you can always talk with me at the post at any time I m there, but this time is specifically carved out for you the members. There s nothing off the table. I ve already had some great interactions in the first week and I encourage you to stop by if you feel so inclined. It s going to be a great year and we re already off to a great start! I m excited to work with you, and honored to be your Commander and be able to represent this great Post and organization.
Independence Day Flag Ceremony The American Legion Post 116 Color Guard and Scouts from Troop 931 of the Boy Scouts of America s Occoneechee Council conducted the presentation of flags during an Independence Day Flag Celebration. The ceremony took place at The Church of Jesus Christ, of Latter Day Saints, Fuquay-Varina Ward. (L to R) Legionaries George Gunther, Edward Wagner, John Lockhart, Chauncy Scarbough, and Joe King presented the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard Service Flags. The Stars and Stripes were presented by the LDS Brothers from Troop 931. The Early Bird Membership Renewal Notices were sent out July 1st and we have only until August 30th to achieve 50% or 380 renewals. But we re way better than that so let s go all the way to 100% with 760 renewals. Blow them out of the water! Your team is here to help you.
