HUDDLE UPS (OPTIONAL) Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins or a pick-up time as parents arrive at the end of the session. It s a great time for interaction with a small group leader through games, conversations, or review questions. Play the countdown video to signal the end of Huddles Ups and the beginning of the session. Estimated time: varies according to schedule Tech: none People: Small Group Leaders Supplies (for each small group): Keep Away balloons Silly Situations index cards, marker KEEP AWAY Before the session inflate a balloon for your Huddle Up group. Welcome kids to your Huddle Up group. Invite kids to stand in a circle and explain the game. Lead a child to stand in the middle of the circle. Provide an inflated balloon and challenge the kids in the circle to bat the balloon back and forth while attempting to keep the child in the middle from intercepting it. If the child in the middle successfully captures the balloon, he must name a way to be kind to others that starts with the first letter of his last name. Choose a new player to stand in the middle of the circle and play again as time allows. Comment that even though the game was fun, generally it is unkind to exclude others. Explain that today kids will learn that they should treat others with love and kindness. Watch for the countdown video to signal the end of Huddle Ups. Guide your small group to join the others to begin worship. SILLY SITUATIONS (after the session) Before the session write one tongue twister per index card: ŜSilly Ŝ Sally s super sonic singing sounded shocking. ŜBad Ŝ Billy broke Bobby s best baseball bat. ŜLoopy Ŝ Lilly laughs loudly learning lessons in the library. ŜWild Ŝ Willy wonders why Watson wears wacky watches on Wednesday. Remind kids that people should love others and be kind. Explain that kids will take turns trying to say some crazy tongue twisters. Tell kids that after everyone has a turn to say the twister, the group will discuss how they could show love in that silly situation. (Help apply each situation to kids real lives by asking what they would do if a friend did not perform well; someone broke their best toy; a friend is talking when it is time to be quiet; or someone is making fun of what another person is wearing.) If you have extra time, challenge each child to make up his own silly situation and share it with the group. Estimated time: 5 minutes Tech: Life Point slide, Bible Verse slide People: Bible Study Leader, 12 kids Props: paper lunch bag with the following items inside: half-eaten sandwich, bag of chips with only 2 chips inside, and a very black banana (or browned apple core) BIBLE STUDY LEADER Hey, kids! I m super excited that you are here for our last lesson about God s amazing world! We ve had a lot of fun together as we ve learned all about creation and God s plan to send Jesus. In fact, I brought a few snacks to celebrate! Is anybody up for some snacks? Great! (Begin unpacking lunch bag as you talk.) Let s see what I have in here. I brought chips you guys like chips, right? Oh, wait. There are only two chips in here. Well, that s disappointing. Let s see what else is in here Oh, look! It s my bologna sandwich that I took to school for lunch on Friday or was it Thursday? Anyway, there isn t much left, and I think the bread might be a bit moldy, but we can just pull that part off, right? And, I have half of my banana left over to share! You guys don t seem very excited about the snacks I brought. Why not? (Allow for responses.) You know, you re right. I didn t bring my best, did I? In fact, I just grabbed the lunch bag that I d forgotten. Now it s all stinky and yucky. I definitely wouldn t want to eat rotten bananas and moldy bologna sandwiches! And, it wouldn t be very kind for me to expect you to eat it either! (Show Bible Verse slide select preferred version.) Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Romans 12:10 (HCSB) Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love. Romans 12:10 (KJV) Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Romans 12:10 (NIV) Love one another with brotherly affection. Romans 12:10 (ESV) Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love. Romans 12:10 (NKJV) Did that verse say we should only love others when we feel like it? No. We should always love others and be kind. That isn t always easy, is it? Let s pray that God will help us learn how we can follow His example to love others. God, You are so good to us. You created an amazing world for us to live in. You created us in Your image so that we could worship You. You even gave us Your very best gift by sending Jesus to take the punishment for our sins. Thank You for Your love! Help us learn to follow Your example and love others even when it might be hard. In Jesus name, amen. Our True2Life team (or the Gumshoe kids) has some things to say about loving others even when it s hard. Let s check in with them. (Bible study leader leaves.) Believe it or not, that s what we re talking about today. No, not moldy bologna, but about being kind and showing love to others! People should love others as they love themselves. (Show Life Point slide.) Say that with me: People should love others as they love themselves. Our Bible verse teaches us how we should love others. Let s read it together: BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 4 3

TRUE2LIFE DRAMA Estimated time: 5-7 minutes Tech: Gumshoe video (optional) People: Ben and Sarah (teen-aged friends) Props: 2 backpacks or book bags Sarah and Ben enter. Sarah: So, it was a crazy day at school today, wasn t it? Ben: I ve never seen anything like that before. Sarah: Do you think we ll ever be allowed to eat in the cafeteria again? Ben: I think you and I will. But I don t know about that guy who was yelling and dropped his tray. He ll probably be on clean up duty for the rest of his life. Sarah: (shocked) For life? Do you really think so? Ben: Well, maybe Ben: He s always talking about how he s the fastest member of the track team, quickest at taking tests Sarah: And loudest at yelling. (thinking) He does seem to really like himself. You d think he would like his brother, too. Ben: You d think so. Especially when your brother is serving you your lunch. Sarah: What ever happened to brotherly love? Ben: I don t know. But I do know that brotherly love won t ban you from lunch. Sarah: See you tomorrow at school. Ben: At lunch. (They exit.) (END SCENE) Sarah: Why do you think he started saying such mean things to the guy who was serving him? Ben: I don t know. By the time I saw what was going on a teacher was talking to him. Sarah: Did you know that the guy who was serving him the guy who serves us every day is his brother? Ben: I heard somebody say something like that. Sarah: I think they re about ten years apart. Ben: No! (pause) Well, that explains why they both have red hair. Sarah: That guy who was yelling, the one who threw his tray, is usually pretty nice. Ben: He definitely likes himself. Sarah: What do you mean? BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 4 4

CONNECTION POINT GAME Estimated time: 10 minutes Tech: Connection Point Game slide People: Connection Point Leader, all kids Props: 1w0 paper lunch bags, 10 index cards, marker GAME INSTRUCTIONS: Involve all kids in a game of Let s Make a Choice. Kids will earn imaginary prizes, some good and some not so good, as a result of their choices. Before the session boldly number each paper bag with a number 1-10. On each index card write 1 of the following prizes. Drop 1 card inside each bag. ŜYou Ŝ win a vacation to the moon! ŜYou Ŝ win a lifetime supply of bologna! ŜYou Ŝ win extra homework for a year! ŜYou Ŝ win a pair of stinky socks! ŜYou Ŝ win a robot to do your chores! ŜYou Ŝ win a scoop of ice cream every day for the rest of your life! ŜYou Ŝ win a hat that makes you invisible! ŜYou Ŝ win three wishes! ŜYou Ŝ win an empty bag of chips! ŜYou Ŝ win a broken television! Call on a child to answer a review question from any of the previous sessions. If she answers correctly, invite her to choose a numbered bag. (Suggested review questions: What is something God created? How did God make people differently from the rest of creation? What does it mean to be made in God s image? What is sin?) Tell her to choose a bag. Remind her that some prizes are great, and others are not. Give her the option to open the bag she chose or complete a challenge to switch her choice. If she chooses to keep her first number, open the corresponding bag to reveal her prize. If she decides to switch her number, she must complete a challenge before making a second choice and revealing her prize. (Suggested challenges: Sing Jesus Loves Me to the friend sitting next to you; Hold your nose and say the alphabet; Stand on one foot for 30 seconds; Give your best gorilla impression; and so on.) Play as many rounds as your time allows in order to involve as many kids as possible. As kids reveal each prize, remove that bag from play. CONNECTION POINT LEADER (Show Connection Point Game slide.) Guess what? Today s Connection Point game is for EVERYBODY! Are you ready to play Let s Make a Choice? Here s how the game works. I will ask a question about some of the things we ve been learning together. If I call on you, and you answer correctly, you can MAKE A CHOICE! You guys have to help me out with that part! When I point to you, everyone shout: MAKE A CHOICE! Let s practice! Ready? (Point to kids and lead them to shout: MAKE A CHOICE! ) Great! You ll notice that I brought some lunch bags with me today, too! I don t have rotten bananas or moldy bologna in these lunch bags! These bags have amazing prizes inside well, some of them do. Some prizes are great, like getting to ride a rocket to Mars! Other prizes are not so great, like having to eat mustard and broccoli sandwiches every day for a year. But, don t worry! All of these prizes are just pretend and just for fun. We won t REALLY make you eat mustard and broccoli sandwiches for a whole year, and we sure don t have a rocket! So, that s pretty easy! Answer a question and choose a number. There may be some twists and turns along the way, but I ll explain those as we play! Let s get started with our first question! (Ask a review question and play the game as outlined above. Each time a child correctly answers a review question, lead the kids to loudly shout: MAKE A CHOICE! Offer challenges to kids who choose to switch their bags.) Some of you made great choices and earned a cool prize! However, some of you didn t choose so well. How did it make you feel when you opened your bag and discovered a bummer prize? Did any of you feel angry? Did any of you feel that the game was unfair? (Allow for responses to questions.) BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 4 5

Today we will hear about two brothers. One made a great choice that pleased God. But something happened that caused the other brother to get upset. He became very angry. In just a few minutes we will find out what happened between these two brothers and discover how bad choices led to some tough consequences. But, right now, let s all make a GOOD choice and worship God together! Then, we ll open God s Word to learn about loving others. SONG BEFORE THE SESSION: On the large grocery bag in large, bold letters write Adam and Eve. On one side of a lunch bag write Cain. On the other side write Cain and draw an angry face. Put the fruit snacks inside the bag and set the bag inside the grocery sack. On one side of a second lunch bag write Abel. On the other side write Abel and draw a happy face. Put the packet of animal crackers inside the lunch bag and set it in the grocery sack as well. Estimated time: 3 minutes Tech: Music video, mics for singers, lights (optional) Music: These Are the Names of God (lead sheet available on DVD-ROM) or download a worship song of your choice People: Worship Leader and/or Worship Team Props: none LEADER First Corinthians 13 tells us that love is patient and kind, and that it isn t rude or angry. Love never fails! Aren t you glad that God s love never fails? He never gives up on us, and His love can never run out. Let s stand and praise God together for His great love! (Show the music video.) (Lead kids to sit as song ends.) BIBLE STORY Estimated time: 10 minutes Tech: Christ Focus, Life Point, and Bible Story slides; Bible Story video People: Bible Story Leader Props: Bible, large paper grocery bag, 2 paper lunch bags, marker, packet of fruit snacks, small bag of animal crackers (Play the Bible Story video or tell the following Bible story.) BIBLE STUDY LEADER (Show Bible Story slide.) You guys did a great job with all of those review questions during our game! I have another one for you: Who were the first people God created? (Allow for responses; display the grocery bag to reveal the correct answer.) Yes, Adam and Eve were the first people God created! Last week we learned about their decision to disobey God. We learned that disobeying God is called sin. What were the consequences of Adam and Eve s sin? (Allow for responses.) Well, after some time, Adam and Eve had two sons. Their names were Cain (pull the bag labeled Cain out of the grocery sack so that the side WITHOUT the sad face is facing the audience) and Abel (reveal bag labeled Abel make sure the happy face is not visible). Cain and Abel grew up and had different jobs. I have a clue inside my bags to help you guess their jobs. Would anyone like to take a peek and make a guess? (Invite a child to peek inside the Cain bag but do not reveal the contents to the rest of the group. Allow him to make a guess. If he is incorrect, invite another child to look inside the bag and guess. Reveal the contents to the whole group and explain that Cain was a farmer who grew crops. Repeat the process with the bag labeled Abel, eventually revealing that Abel was a shepherd and worked with animals.) Now that we know a little bit about these brothers, let s read from the Bible to see what else we can learn about them. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 4 6

(Read Genesis 4:3-5.) In the course of time Cain presented some of the land s produce as an offering to the LORD. And Abel also presented an offering some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, but He did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious What did Abel bring to the Lord? (Refer to the animal crackers; allow kids to respond.) Abel offered God the best of his animals, and God was very pleased. (Turn the bag around to reveal the happy face.) What did Cain bring as an offering to God? (Refer to the fruit snacks; allow kids to respond.) Cain brought some of his crops, but God was not pleased with Cain s offering. (Turn bag around to reveal the angry face.) Cain was very angry that God had not accepted his offering. Have you ever been angry? Sometimes things can be very upsetting! Some people yell when they get angry. Other people get really quiet or cry. Let s keep reading to see what Cain did. (Read Genesis 4:8.) Cain said to his brother Abel, Let s go out to the field. And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Uh-oh. Give me a thumbs-up if Cain made a good choice, or a thumbs-down if Cain made a bad choice. (Pause for responses.) That was definitely a thumbs-down choice! Cain sinned by killing his brother, Abel. (Lay the bag labeled Abel down on its side.) We know from last week that sin has consequences. God told Cain that because of his sin, he would never be able to grow crops again and that he would wander the earth for the rest of his life. So, Cain left God s presence and traveled to a land east of the garden. Isn t that a sad story? What could Cain have done differently? Our Bible verse today tells us to love others. That s sometimes hard to do. Sometimes our friends or siblings may disappoint us, hurt our feelings, or even make us angry. The easy choice is to be angry like Cain and try to hurt them back. But, that is not a choice that pleases God. God wants us to be like Him. He wants us to show love and be kind, even when people may not act kindly toward us. (Show Christ Focus slide.) Jesus is our best example of how to love others, even when they aren t being kind back. People laughed at and spit on Jesus. They beat Jesus and nailed Him to a cross. But, all the while, Jesus was choosing to give up His life because He loved people. He loved even the people who were being mean to Him. That is a HUGE amount of love. Let s pray. God, thank You for loving us even though we make mistakes and sometimes disobey You. Help us to show that kind of love to our friends, our family, and even to people we don t know. Remind us to always be kind, even when it s hard. We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. SONG AND OFFERING Estimated time: 3 minutes Tech: mics for singers, lights (optional) Music: Use a favorite song or download a worship song of your choice. People: Worship Leader and/or Worship Team Props: none LEADER Loving others, even when we are angry or sad, is another way that we can be like Jesus. We should want to be more and more like Him every day. Let s sing together and ask God to help us follow His example. Optional Giving Segment: Giving an offering is a way you can show love to people you ve never even met! The money you give helps people in our community who need to know about Jesus, but it also helps people who may need food or shelter. If you would like to give an offering today, (Give your own directions for how the kids can give their offerings. You might consider collecting today s offering in paper lunch bags to reinforce today s lesson.) (After collecting the offering, guide kids to stand for remainder of worship song.) CONNECTION POINT BIBLE VERSE Estimated time: 5-8 minutes Tech: Connection Point Bible verse slide, Bible Verse slide People: Connection Point leader Props: none CONNECTION POINT LEADER (Show Connection Point Bible Verse slide.) Let s read today s Bible verse together. (Lead kids to read your preferred version.) How can you show love to others? (Allow kids to respond.) Those are some great ideas! Some simple ways to show love could be a high-five, two thumbs up, or a smile. ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS: Select your preferred version of the Bible verse. Invite kids to stand and read the verse with you. Because today s verse is short, it should be an easy one for kids to commit to memory. Call on volunteers to tell how they can show love to others. Suggest that a few ways might be to simply give a smile, a high-five, or two thumbs up. Direct kids to find a friend, say the verse together, and do one of the following actions. Find a friend who is taller or shorter than you. Say the verse together and give each other a high-five. Find a friend with the same color hair as you. Say the verse together and give each other two thumbs up. Find a friend whose name you don t know. Say the verse together and give each other a big smile. BIBLE VERSE (SELECT PREFERRED VERSION): Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Romans 12:10 (NKJV) (Invite kids to stand. Lead the activity as described above.) CONNECTION POINT MISSIONS Estimated time: 5-8 minutes Tech: Connection Point Missions slide, Dentists on the Lake missions video People: Connection Point leader Props: none CONNECTION POINT LEADER (Show Connection Point Missions slide.) Have you ever thought about how being a dentist can show love to others AND make opportunities to tell about Jesus? That s exactly what s happening in Cambodia. Let s see how missionaries there are making a difference. (Play the Dentists on the Lake missions video.) Wow! Can you imagine living in a floating village? How are Hahn and Linh helping the people who live there? (providing dental care, telling about Jesus) They are using practical skills, like pulling teeth, for opportunities to meet people and tell them about Jesus. Today s video gave us some important things to pray about. Do you remember how you can pray for the one believer who lives in the floating village? (courage to tell others, continue to grow in his faith, not to be lonely) That must be really hard to be the only person in your whole village who follows Jesus! Let s pray for him now and also pray for Hahn and Linh to continue having opportunities to share the gospel with others. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE KIDS UNIT 1 SESSION 4 8

(Give kids an opportunity to pray, or lead kids to pray.) God, we pray for this one believer in Cambodia. Help him to continue to learn about You and to have courage to tell others about Jesus. TM Unit 1 Session 4 THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today s Bible study was about Cain and Abel. Cain had a choice not to sin but chose the wrong way. People always have a choice in how to react to disappointment. How can you help your child learn to respond in a way that is pleasing to God? KIDS CREATION LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING: God wants me to praise Him for His creation. CAIN AND ABEL Adam and Eve had two sons. Cain, the oldest, farmed the land. Abel, the youngest, was a shepherd. Cain gave some of his crops as an offering to God. Abel gave some of the firstborn animals from his flock as an offering to God. God honored Abel s offering, but God did not approve of Cain s offering. Cain was furious and his anger showed on his face. God spoke to Cain, Why are you so angry? If you do what is right, won t you be accepted? If you do not do what is right, sin is at your door. You must control your anger. LIVE IT OUT: Help your child write a list of ways she should treat people. Help her develop strategies for dealing with difficult people in order to show them the love of God. Encourage her to remember to love others as she loves herself. DAILY BIBLE READING: Sunday: Genesis 4:2 Monday: Genesis 4:7 Tuesday: Job 13:23 Wednesday: Romans 6:23 Thursday: John 1:29 Friday: Romans 6:11 Saturday: Psalms 25:11 BIBLE VERSE Romans 12:10 Cain told Abel, Let s go out to the field. While they were there, Cain attacked his younger brother and killed him. God spoke to Cain again. Where is Abel? I don t know, Cain lied. Am I supposed to watch over my brother? What have you done? God replied. You are cursed now. The ground will not produce crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer. My punishment is too hard! Cain said. When I wander, whoever finds me will kill me! God promised Cain that he would be safe. God placed a mark on Cain so that no one would kill him.
