CHRISTIANITY YEAR 4 TERM 2 PILGRIMAGES, CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL, PLACES OF PILGRIMAGE KS2 Religious Education JULY 2014

Lesson 1 I can describe why pilgrimages are to people of faith Ask questions about reasons for making pilgrimages and journeys in their lives Why did these different people undertake the journeys? Do pupils think that they had regrets? At the end of the journey had it been worth it? What journeys have been for pupils and why? I can describe why pilgrimages are s Identify similarities and differences across religions what is to me and others when discussing reasons for pilgrimages Pilgrimage / Life as a Journey Discuss famous journeys from stories & history e.g. explorers. What journeys have been for pupils and why? E.g. visit a relative, go back to where they were born etc. Why did these different people undertake the journeys? Do pupils think that they had regrets? At the end of the journey had it been worth it? Introduce the idea that in different faiths special journeys called pilgrimages are made. Explore possible reasons for such a journey pay respect, visit a holy site, following a commandment (Hajj - pillar of Islam) Canterbury (start) Explore the historic reasons for Canterbury becoming a place of pilgrimage Augustine and the founding of the Cathedral/ Thomas Becket etc. General Resources for this Term: Request has a wealth of stories, clips and information Many bible stories with accompanying power points can be found here. Materials are available from the Cathedral s Schools Office. It would be very helpful to visit Canterbury Cathedral. A visit would enable pupils could experience sights/sounds/smells and make their own pilgrimage & have quiet reflection time whilst in the building.

What was/is it like to go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury? What was special about your visit? Were you able to reflect/pray during your visit? How does going on a pilgrimage make a difference to people s lives? I can describe why pilgrimages were made to Canterbury & make simple links special moments/ stages of a pilgrimage to my own visit to Canterbury what is to me and others when discussing prayer and reflection during our pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral Visit Canterbury Cathedral Canterbury What was/is it like to go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury? Lesson 3 Describe some of the different ways people express their beliefs by visiting different sites (according to denomination) why s go on their own values and special places Why is. a place of for whom? Is there anywhere you would like to visit which is special or sacred? What are your reasons for wanting to go there? I can make simple links making pilgrimages and how this impacts s lives symbolism/ beliefs about make links these and their own journey of life s from different denominations visit different places of pilgrimage. Who goes on pilgrimage here? Why do people go on pilgrimage to these places? If you need a 4 th place: Ideas Bank RE Special Places Pilgrim s Progress, The Vatican Request has a wealth of stories, clips and information. This is an opportunity for assessment activity. Ensure you level each child, rather than the group they are working in. Take notes over the 2 weeks of work to inform when they do their final presentation of findings. Lesson 4 why people go on how this impacts their lives. Identify beliefs about pilgrimage and my own life. What are some of the reasons for s making a pilgrimage? How might a pilgrimage influence a s life journey? Are there any ways in which your life so far has been a kind of pilgrimage? What stages/places are there in your life? I can make simple links making pilgrimages and how this impacts s lives symbolism/ beliefs about make links these and their own journey of life Why do s go on Pilgrimages? This lesson is an opportunity to bring together the idea that pilgrimage can be an part of a faith journey with opportunities to: Refresh faith Thank God for something good which has happened Ask forgiveness To think about faith together with other s Pray for healing/refreshing Explore pilgrimage as symbolic of the life journey. Invite a visitor who has been on a pilgrimage to visit the class & talk about their experiences Art work or poetry on the pilgrimage of life (John Bunyan Pilgrim s Progress might help with this) Draw their own journey of life with stages noted and reflections about these stages. This lesson could be an assessment opportunity Pilgrim s Progress by John Bunyan (In a suitable version)

Lesson 5 Describe the meaning for different symbols and how this links to the Christmas message. what this means for me. What does each part of the Christingle symbolise? Why is light an symbol? Is light or any other symbol significant for you? I can describe the meaning of each symbol of light and make simple links about how this forms an part of the Christmas message I can make links my own attitudes and behaviour Christmas (Light) Light plays an part in describing Jesus (The Light of the World) and this forms part of message of Christmas. Look at the Holman Hunt picture children discuss what can they see? What might these symbols mean? Who do you think the man is? How do you know? Why is he holding a lantern? Whose door is it? Why is he outside the door? Etc. Really explore the painting & symbolism in it. Read John 8 v 12. What do pupils think Jesus words mean? If possible use a collection of pictures and objects that show light and other pictures of Jesus in art where he is portrayed as light. Discuss the idea that Jesus came to overcome darkness. Metaphor of light. Make a Christingle & children draw & label each part, explaining its symbolism and meaning. OR Write poems using the ideas and imagery that have been discussed, e.g. make an acrostic using the word light or Jesus Finish with a reflection time with a lit candle where children can be quiet and think about their own responses to what they have learnt. How do lights and symbols of lights make you feel? What does light mean for you? I can describe the meaning of each symbol of light and make simple links about how this forms an part of the Christmas message I can make links my own attitudes and behaviour Christmas (Light) Read the Christmas story in the most appropriate version. Discuss any links the Christmas story and the light imagery e.g. The world was in darkness before Jesus came The star the wise men followed Look at Christmas cards which use light images. Ask pupils to discuss whether or not they think light is a good metaphor for Christ. Create their own Christmas card with a symbol of light and appropriate greeting, conveying the meanings of light that we have been discussing.
