Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary Laura Nichols, Organist Morning Jenny Huellinghoff, Organist Evening Kathy Scheer, Choir Director ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: As the season of Advent progresses we hear significant voices that proclaim God s work unleashed in the world. John the Baptist calls us to repent of our sins and prepare the way of the Lord. Mary rejoices at the angel Gabriel telling her that she would be the blessed mother of God. Faithful Christians resound in songs of praise for Immanuel God with us. In eager anticipation we welcome Jesus our Lord and rejoice at His coming. THE DIVINE SERVICE INVOCATION, CONFESSION, and FORGIVENESS In the name of the Father, and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Our help is in the name of the LORD. Who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8 In this season of penitence and reflection let us think of our unworthiness, confess before God 2

that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and ask for His merciful forgiveness. May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to life everlasting. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. May the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. OPENING HYMN Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates LW 23 ADVENT ANTIPHONS O Adonai and ruler of the house of Israel, who appeared to Moses in the burning bush and gave him the law on Sinai: Come with an outstretched arm and redeem us. O Key of David and scepter of the house of Israel, You open and no one can close, You close and no one can open. Come with an outstretched arm and redeem us. O Emmanuel, our king and our Lord, the anointed for the nations and their Savior: Come and save us, O Lord our God. Come, O Savior, among us! 3

Jesus, our Lord! Alleluia! Amen. Liturgical texts, adapted SALUTATION and OPENING PRAYER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O Lord God, heavenly Father, who at Your first coming didst send Your messenger to prepare the way of the Lord, grant that we may hear the call to repentance, pray, and prepare, to greet Jesus. Amidst the busyness and challenges of life grant us a sense of peace and renewed dedication in these days, that we meet You with joyful hearts and hope-filled lives. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. ADVENT HYMN HYMN Comfort, Comfort Ye My People Sts. 1, 2, and 4: LW 28 Comfort, comfort ye My people, Speak ye peace, thus saith our God; Comfort those who sit in darkness, Mourning neath their sorrows load. Speak ye to Jerusalem Of the peace that waits for them; Tell her that her sins I cover And her warfare now is over. Yea, her sins our God will pardon, Blotting out each dark misdeed; 4

All that well deserved His anger He no more will see or heed. She hath suffered many a day, Now her griefs have passed away; God will change her pinning sadness Into ever-springing gladness. Make ye straight what long was crooked; Make the rougher places plain. Let your hearts be true and humble, As befits His holy reign. For the glory of the Lord Now o er earth is shed abroad, And all flesh shall see the token That His Word is never broken. Text: Johann Oleasrius, 1611 84; trans. Catherine Winkworth, 1827 78, alt. Tune: FREU DICH SEHR, Trente quatre pseaumes de David, Geneva, 1551, ed. Louis Bourgeois Text and tune: Public domain. OLD TESTAMENT Daniel 7:13 14 (The Rule of the Son of Man) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. CHOIR (evening only) PSALM Psalm 26 All: Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering. Prove me, O LORD, and try me; test my heart and my mind. 5

For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in Your faithfulness. Men/Boys: I do not sit with men of falsehood, nor do I consort with hypocrites. I hate the assembly of evil-doers, and I will not sit with the wicked. Women/Girls: I wash my hands in innocence and go around Your altar, O LORD, proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, and telling all Your wondrous deeds. O Lord, I love the habitation of Your house and the place where Your glory dwells. All: All: Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men, in whose hands are evil devices and whose right hands are full of bribes. But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity; redeem me, and be gracious to me. My foot stands on level ground; in the great assembly I will bless the LORD. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. EPISTLE 2 Peter 1:16 21 (The Glory of Christ and the Prophetic Word) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 6

VERSE Philippians 4:5b 6, Psalm 50:2 6, 14 The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. Our God comes; He does not keep silence; before Him is a devouring fire, around Him a mighty tempest. He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that He may judge His people: Gather to Me My faithful ones, who made a covenant with Me by sacrifice! The heavens declare His righteousness, for God Himself is judge! Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 1:39 45 (Mary visits Elizabeth) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN OF THE DAY O Come, O Come, Emmanuel [Sts. 1, 6, and 7 LW 31 Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel 7

Shall come to you, O Israel! Oh, come, our Dayspring from on high, And cheer us by your drawing nigh, Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, And death's dark shadows put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to you, O Israel! Oh, come, Desire of nations, bind In one the hearts of all mankind; Oh, bid our sad divisions cease, And be yourself our King of Peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to you, O Israel! SERMON CREED/CATECHISM The Third Article of the Apostles Creed and its meaning from Luther s Small Catechism. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, 8

and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. OFFERTORY HYMN O Jesus So Sweet, O Jesus So Mild HS98 858 PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. CLOSING PRAYER O Lord, grant us Your grace in this present age to live with kindness, faithfulness, and righteousness as we look for the fullness of Your coming among us in all of Your glory and power at the end of the 9

age. In Your mercy may we come to that eternal inheritance which You have prepared for those who love You. By the indwelling of the Holy Spirit lead us and guide us through our days until at last we join with saints and angels in endless praise around Your heavenly throne. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. Amen. BENEDICTION Almighty God, Father, Son, and + Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen.
