I AM that I AM Matthew 6:9 13: In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. The most important word in the Lord s Prayer is also the shortest! Without it, the house of the Lord cannot stand. Take it out and the house falls to the ground. What is it: Matthew 6:9 - Our Father who is in heaven (NASB). God is. Not God was, will be, could be or should be, but God is. He is the God of the present tense, the foundation of His own house - a house that David said would stand forever. It s hard to imagine anything lasting forever, since our world is in such a mess - the foundation of our society is breaking up, the walls are crumbling, and the roof is leaking. Our nation is struggling with major problems both at home and abroad - terrorist attacks, war, school shootings, economic recession, etc., - this country is in a spiritual mess for one main reason we have forgotten God, rejected Jesus, and fallen in love with the world! One person was being interviewed on television about our country s problems and was asked, How could God let things like this happen? I believe this person gave an insightful response I believe that God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman that He is, I believe that He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand that He leave us alone? I. Your friendly enemy 1 John 2:15-17: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. When God says that we are to not love the world, He isn t talking about planet earth; God said creation was good: Genesis 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. He isn t talking about the physical world of seven billion people: John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. The word world in 1 John 2 is the Greek word Cosmos, which means an order of things or a system. It is a way of doing things (culture). We have certain systems we call a world - world of finance, world of sports, world of fashion, a cosmopolitan area is a city system; cosmetics means a woman is putting her face in order. All of these words come from the basic word we translate as world. So when he says Do not love he means there is a system we are to not love, not planet earth or people, but an ungodly, devilish system that is set against God. We are to not love that world. 1

Though it may be very friendly to you and cozy up to you, it is a friendly enemy. And it hates Jesus and Christians with a passion: John 15:18-19: If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. ESV Why does the world hate Jesus? It s not because He healed the sick and blessed little children, fed hungry people, walked on water or died on the cross. The world hates Jesus because He said its works were evil: John 7:7 The people of this world cannot hate you. They hate me, because I tell them that they do evil things. CEV Today we are not supposed to say anything is evil, we are supposed to be tolerant of everything. The sin today is to call sin for what it is sin. But that is never going to wash when we stand before the One Whose eyes are like fire (Revelation 1:14)! There is a mastermind behind this world system - a dark, devilish diabolical person who is its prince/ruler: John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 1 John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. The whole cosmos is in the lap of the wicked one, the whole world is being rocked and cradled in the hands of Satan. Revelation 12:9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time. Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Satan s highest priority is to draw us away from God so that we will be lost. John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. To accomplish his mission of destroying us, Satan has help fallen angels and worldly sinful people who also hate Jesus and have rebelled against God: Luke 16:8 for the sons of this world are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14-15: Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. In the end they will get the punishment their wicked deeds deserve. NLT Satan also has a networking of ideas and values that are skillfully and deceptively woven together to trap the most innocent and draw us away from God so that we will be lost: 1 Corinthians 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He catches the wise in their own craftiness. 2

The wisdom of the world is the lies and delusions and persecutions and temptations and false teachings and worldly values that originate with Satan and are intended to destroy the church and lead Christians away from Christ. It extends from the schoolhouse to the statehouse to Madison Ave to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave to Wall Street to Hollywood. It may seem innocent and beautiful and alluring, but it is designed that way by the devil to deceive. The world wants to be friends with you! But if you are a friend to this world, you are a traitor to God. If we let ourselves and our children live like the world, they will begin to believe like the world and want the world s things and even love the world! That is exactly what has happened to the church in many ways the church is more worldly than the world was 20 years ago! Too many have been conformed to this world: James 4:4 - You adulterers! Don t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. NLT Where is the world headed? Psalm 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. II. What can we do The church is surrounded by spiritual forces that are trying to destroy us Satan and the world are coming for us and our kids: Ephesians 6:12 - For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. NASB The world is getting worse day by day and it can be overwhelming at times! What can we do about it? The servant of Elisha asked that question once: 2 Kings 6:8-15: Now the king of Syria was making war against Israel; and he consulted with his servants, saying, My camp will be in such and such a place. And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are coming down there. Then the king of Israel sent someone to the place of which the man of God had told him. Thus he warned him, and he was watchful there, not just once or twice. Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was greatly troubled by this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, Will you not show me which of us is for the king of Israel? And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom. So he said, Go and see where he is, that I may send and get him. And it was told him, saying, Surely he is in Dothan. Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, Alas, my master! What shall we do? What was Elisha s response and God s answer: 2 Kings 6:16-17: So he answered, Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see. Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. We have to remember something very important - God is the foundation of His house. The real question in life and for our world is not how strong we are, but how strong God is. We need to focus on His strength, not ours - on the nature of God, not the size of our muscles. 3

That, by the way, is what God told Moses to do. Exodus 3:1-5: Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn. So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses! And he said, Here I am. Then He said, Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. The tone was set in verse 5 - Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground (Exodus 3:5). With these fifteen words Moses and the rest of the human race is enrolled in a class on God. Once and for all time, God defines His role and our role. God is holy! Trying to approach God on even a quarter inch of leather is blasphemy (something we made or man-made works). 1 Corinthians 1:27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty It s not about us, it s always about God! As God continued talking with Moses, He told him He was sending him to Egypt to deliver the Israelites from slavery: Exodus 3:10-15: Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? So He said, I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain. Then Moses said to God, Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they say to me, What is His name? what shall I say to them? And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And He said, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. Moreover God said to Moses, Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations. Notice that God did not waste any time trying to convince Moses about what Moses can do the whole conversation was about what God can do. We would do the opposite. We would explain to Moses how ideally suited he is to return to Egypt (former prince). Then we d remind him how perfect he is for wilderness travel (shepherd). We would go over his strengths and his resume come on Moses, you can do it, give it a try. But God doesn t do that - the strength of Moses is never considered. No pep talk is given, not one word is spoken to Moses about Moses and what he could do, but many words are used to reveal God. The strength of Moses is never even considered, is not the issue, the strength of God is. III. Conclusion As we face a world bent on our destruction, remember we won t be leading a nation, but we will lead our families and churches! Our strength doesn t matter - the strength of God does. The key question in life is not How strong am I? but rather How strong is God? 4

God is powerful beyond our wildest imaginations: Isaiah 40:25-26: To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal? asks the Holy One. Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. NLT When God is ready, He will end all of this. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10: when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed. But until then, as we deal with our temptations and face our enemies, we need to trust in Him and be faithful to Him! Trust me - I can take care of you. God Psalm 56:3-4: But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me? NLT Psalm 62:8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. When you feel like you are drowning in life s situations, don t worry, your Life Guard walks on water! Isaiah 43:2-3: When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior NLT The world will never love us, can never satisfy us, and certainly can t save our souls, but the one who does the will of God will live forever: 1 John 5:4-5: For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world - our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 5
