Regulations on Fast and Abstinence ASH WEDNESDAY, March 5, 2014, and GOOD FRIDAY, April 18, 2014, are days of fast and abstinence. FRIDAYS OF LENT are also days of abstinence. FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Sacred Heart Parish Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA and St. John the Baptist Parish Essex, MA ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note: that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, This Sunday, March 23, and Monday, March 24, at 7:00 PM in Fr Albert MacPherson OSA, will offer a brief Lenten Mission on Lent: What's in it for Me?. Mass will be celebrated each of the evenings and we will be invited to experience the healing and restoration offered through the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We urge all to join us in this Lenten opportunity for healing and reflection. We look forward to seeing you there. Thank you to Larry and Sally O'Maley, Brian Browning, John and Patti Byrnes, and all those who worked to provide a wonderful St. Patrick's Dinner last weekend. The hours of their dedicated work help provide over a 100 meals of Corned Beef, Potatoes, Carrots, and of course Cabbage. All who attended when away filled with good cheer and well feed. Thank you to the Cunningham children for providing entertainment and step dancing. It was a great joy to welcome the senior priests from Regina Cleri to celebrate with us. It is always a joy to welcome them. They always marvel at the gracious welcome and support they receive from the parishes. Thank you to all who assisted in this annual celebration. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Jack Faith Book Reflection on Today s Readings The Third Sunday of Lent Exodus 17: 3-7 Psalm 95 Romans 5: 1-2,5-8 John 4: 5-42 From today s Gospel reading: (The Samaritans) said to the woman, We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world. Reflection: Pope Francis has called us to be missionary disciples. The Samaritan woman s missionary training began with the face-to-face time she had talking with Jesus, asking questions and listening to his answers. She does, what the Pope tells us missionary disciples are supposed to do: listen to the Word of God and look for opportunities to share it with others So we ask ourselves: When was the last time we shared our faith with someone? What holds us back from being missionary disciples? Rosary Each week the Rosary is prayed several times at Sacred Heart Chapel. As part of your Lenten exercises, maybe you would like to join in these communal celebrations. The times for the Rosary are: Before the 8:00 Mass Monday- Wednesday, Monday evenings at 7:00 and Saturday Mornings at 8:00. Ecumenical Good Friday Service The Manchester Clergy invites you to join in a Good Friday Service at 12:00 on April 18. The service this year will be held at, Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. 4

Catholic Appeal 2014 The 2014 Catholic Appeal campaign is well underway both parishes and throughout the Archdiocese of Boston. To date 29 Donors from Sacred Heart Parish have pledged $31,770.00 towards the parish goal of $40,449.00. There has been 12 donors who have pledged $6,285.00 towards the goal of $9,368.00 for St. John the Baptist Parish. Thank you to all who participated up to this point. Your generosity will benefit hundreds of Pastoral, charitable, and educational programs at work within the Archdiocese of Boston, and at our parishes. To reach our goals, we need the participation of every parishioner. Your gift to the Catholic Appeal moves us forward in hope as we work in unity to strengthen the ministries and mission of the Archdiocese of Boston. Holy Week Schedule Holy Thursday April 17, 2014 7:00 PM Mass of the Lord's Supper Good Friday April 18, 2014 7:00 PM Passion of the Lord Saint John the Baptist Church Holy Saturday April 19, 2014 8:00 PM Great Vigil of Easter Easter Sunday Morning Masses April 20, 2014 8:30 AM St. John the Baptist Church 10:00AM Pilgrimage to the Holy Land I rejoiced when I heard them say, let us go up to the House of the Lord and now are feet are standing in within your gates Jerusalem. (Psalm 122) Plans are being made for a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in April 2015. This will be my fifth trip to the land that was made holy by the prophets, apostles, and the early church. I invite you see and experience the land of our Savior. This will be my fifth trip to the land that was made holy by the prophets, apostles, and the early church. Most importantly we will experience the places central to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Scriptures will come alive to you as you experience Bethlehem, Nazareth, Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, renew your Baptismal vows at the Jordan River and married couples will be able to renew their vows in Cana. Join us as we pray at the places of the miracles, retrace the steps of Jesus as he carried his cross to Golgotha and see the place of the Resurrection. Experience the Mount of Transfiguration, the desert area of the Temptation, the Qumran caves (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found), Masada, and the Dead Sea are among other highlights of the trip. Those interested can join the list by contacting me, at the rectory, or Eliesa Gallo at Carmel Tours 978-977-3062. At this time, we are unable to determine the exact cost of the pilgrimage, due to airline ticketing policies. We plan to spend 4 nights on the Sea of Galilee and 5 nights in Jerusalem. Breakfast and dinner daily will be included, as well the services of a professional tour guide, motor coach, transfers of one piece of luggage per person and many other features. The cost for this trip of a lifetime will be approximately $4,000, based on 25 pilgrims; final cost will be announced in June. Memorial Opportunities We will are replacing the chairs where the choir sits in. The chairs they are currently using are needed in the chapel for morning Mass. The new chairs have been ordered and will arrive in a few weeks. If you would like to donate a chair or memorialize one, the cost is $300.00 each. Each chair that is donated will have a memorial plaque inscribed as you desire. Please contact Fr. Jack about assisting in this project. 5
