"Orthodoxy", of course, stems from the Greek word "orthodoxia" (orthos - right; doksa faith, opinion) which signifies the true faith and the true and proper worship of God. In particular, what we are celebrating this Sunday is universal catholic, Christian orthodoxy, professed by the entire Church of Christ in the first centuries in the battle against the heresy of Iconoclasm. Now iconoclasm also comes from the ancient Greek eikon image and klastes - a breaker. So, it signifies the heresy of image breaking. The Sunday of Orthodoxy is a festival for the whole Church, both Eastern and Western and a celebration of the decisive victory over Iconoclasm and other heresies. In the early years of the Church (just as throughout history until the present day) strange ideas came up that were contrary to truth and contrary to the direction in which the Holy Spirit wanted to lead the Church. One such idea that started to grow, perhaps due to the influence of non-christian philosophies at the time, was that we shouldn t have images (icons, statues, paintings) of the Lord
or the saints or even of anything. Some thought that this practice was not Biblical and others thought that it might lead to idol worship. Having a difference of opinion might be okay for awhile (even if one or more of the opinions is just plain wrong!), but when people start taking things to extremes and passing laws and getting the government to legislate in favour of the erroneous position, then it can be disastrous. The rulers were convinced to get on board and passed laws that insisted all icons be burned, beautiful churches and monasteries destroyed, supporters of icons imprisoned and tortured and even killed. In a word, it was horrific. To make a long story short, a Council of Bishops in Constantinople in the year 842 finally declared a stop to the nonsense and said that the veneration of icons is not only natural and positive, but it enhances our worship of God and our veneration of the Mother of God and the Saints. The Council instituted the Sunday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy and decreed that it be celebrated yearly. This began on the first Sunday of Lent and the practice has been carried on ever since right to today.
