KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS

THE OTHER HALF OF OUR COMISSION AS FATHERS

EXASPERATE, HUH? EPHESIANS 6:4 Fathers, do not [exasperate] [PROVOKE TO ANGER ] your children; COLOSSIANS 3:21 21 Fathers, do not [embitter][provoke] your children, or they will become discouraged.

TWO SURE FIRED WAYS TO PROVOKE YOUR CHILDREN TREAT THEM AS A LOW PRIORITY Sorry, but something s come up at work BREAK YOUR COMITTMENTS Remember: you are a role model whether you know it or not. What kind of role model are you?

TWO REASONS YOU CAN T CHASE BALANCE 1. IT S NOT BIBLICAL 1. No verse says that 2. Based on false sacred secular distinction. 2. IT WON T WORK ANYWAY. 1. How would you ever know you were in balance? 2. Implies work is equivalent to family.

JESUS DENIED THE BALANCE NOTION: Matthew 6:24 24 No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

PRIORITIES

BIBLICAL PRIORITIES: DEUTERONOMY 6:4-7 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [b] 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

BIBLICAL PRIORITIES: Matt 6:19-21 (Luke 12:34) 19 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust [e] destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

BIBLICAL PRIORITIES: MATTHEW 6:31-33 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

WRONG WAY TO VIEW PRIORITIES

RIGHT WAY TO VIEW PRIORITIES

GOD IN EVERYTHING: COLOSSIANS 3:23 23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,

GOD IN EVERYTHING: ROMANS 14:5-6 5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.

PRIORITIES ARE NOT STATIC. THEY ARE FLUID. 3 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace

YOU REVEAL YOUR PRIORITIES BY YOUR ACTIONS

COMMITMENTS

GOD OUR FATHER IS A PROMISE KEEPER Numbers 23:19 ESV God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

GOD OUR FATHER ALWAYS KEEPS HIS WORD Joshua 23:14 ESV And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.

EVEN GOD OUR FATHER IS BOUND BY HIS WORD Psalm 89:34 ESV I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips.

THE LORD FAVORS MEN WHOSE WORD IS THEIR BOND: PSALM 15:1-2, 4 O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? 2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; He honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt and does not change;

GODLY DADS DON T LIE Colossians 3:9-10 ESV Do not lie to one another. Revelation 21:8 ESV But as for liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

DO NOT MISLEAD OR CREATE FALSE EXPECTATIONS Proverbs 25:14 ESV Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.

GODLY DADS DO NOT BREAK THEIR WORD Numbers 30:2 ESV If a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

GODLY DADS MEET THEIR OBLIGATIONS Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 ESV When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.

GODLY DADS ARE MEN OF THEIR WORD Matthew 5:33-37 ESV But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply Yes or No ; anything more than this comes from evil.

LET YOUR YES MEAN YES James 5:12 ESV But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.

DO THE HONORABLE THING Romans 12:17 ESV do what is honorable in the sight of all.

SCENARIOS FOR DISCUSSION LET US APPLY WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED

SCENARIO 1 PRIORITIES You haven t gone on a family vacation in two years. This summer you assure your children it will be different. You re going to Disneyland! Three days before you leave for Disneyland you are told that you are being considered for a promotion, but there is one hook: you will have to attend a coworker bonding weekend in wine country. What do you do?

SCENARIO 2 COMMITMENTS You told your daughter you would attend her choir concert at school this Saturday. Your biggest customer, a Japanese company, will be in town this weekend and wants to meet with on Saturday, at the same time as your daughter s concert. What do you do?
