Our Approach to God Votum Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth. Amen. Prelude We Pray Now to the Holy Spirit Dietrich Buxtehude *Call to Worship Adapted from Psalm 104 Let us worship God, who in wisdom has created the world. Let us worship God, who gives good things to the creation. Let us worship God, who sends forth the Spirit to the world. Let us worship God and sing praises to the Holy One as long as we live. *Hymn No. 847 This Holy Covenant Was Made Preparation for Communion: Beloved in the Lord Jesus Christ, we propose to celebrate together, with the gracious help of God the Sacrament of the Lord s Supper this Lord s Day. Our conscience, instructed by God s law, rightly declares us unworthy of this gift. We find we have neither loved the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. To examine our lives is to confirm that we deserve exclusion from this royal banquet, and, indeed, from God s presence forevermore. Yet this is God s feast of love, and it was in love that Christ gave himself for us. When we were unworthy, Christ made us worthy. When we should have justly died as punishment for our sins, Christ freely paid our penalty, dying in our place. Christ has become our complete righteousness. Therefore, our self-examination must not end in despair. We are called to trust God s work on our behalf and to receive the gift of forgiveness offered us in Christ Jesus. Our reconciliation to God is found in trusting this good news, that before we chose God, God chose us. We are what God has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, prepared beforehand to be our way of life. Partaking at the Lord s Table is not an act of virtue. This table is prepared for those who humbly trust Christ alone and find in his death, resurrection, and ascension their only peace. Though they often fail in their efforts, those who thus approach this table will desire to please God, conforming their lives to God s purposes. Rest fully assured that when God finds such contrite trust and godly intention, God will forgive all our sins and make us worthy partakers of this heavenly kingdom. page 2

Prayer of Confession Holy God, whose wind still blows, whose breath still brings life, whose Spirit still stirs and enlivens: hear our confession. Blessed with your Spirit s gifts, we have at times left them unused or unrecognized. Blessed by the gifts your Spirit brings to those around us, we have at times not nurtured or even encouraged their gifts. Forgive our neglect of our gifts or those of others, and renew us with a commitment to be open to the ways you would work through us. Help us, through your Spirit, to be the people you would have us be, loving you and our neighbors, and working together as the body of Christ; we pray in Christ s holy name... (please continue in silent prayer) Assurance of Pardon Romans 8:26-27 *Passing of the Peace The Peace of Christ be with you. The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper: The Meaning of the Sacrament The Invitation Communion Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts! We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Holy and right it is, and our joyful duty to give thanks to you at all times and in all places, O Lord our Creator, almighty and everlasting God... we worship and adore your glorious name. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Most righteous God, we remember in this Supper the perfect sacrifice offered once on the cross by our Lord Jesus Christ for the sin of the whole world. In the joy of his resurrection and in expectation of his coming again, we offer ourselves to you as holy and living sacrifices. Together we proclaim the mystery of the faith: Christ has died! Christ is risen! Christ will come again! Send your Holy Spirit upon us... Even so, come, Lord Jesus!
