My Will Be Done PALM SUNDAY APRIL 9, 2017 One of the most comforting parts of the Passion story for me is the agony in the garden. That might sound odd, considering how the disciples fall asleep while Jesus is in distress. I suppose I could identify with them as they show weakness when Jesus needed strength. But I am really comforted by Jesus' words. If the Son of God had to tell Himself and His Father, "not as I will, but as you will" (Matthew 26:39), I should be able to say the same. There are times when I would much rather have things always go my way, but that is not going to happen. So it's comforting to know that Jesus did not take the easy way out, but accepted the Father's will that He should suffer and die. Whenever we say the Lord's Prayer we pray, "Thy will be done." But how often do we still take the easy way out? Ever hear someone tell a lie or spreading gossip that hurts a person's reputation? We can choose to do nothing (the easy way) or gently reproach the other with a simple question, "What would Jesus do?" When I have a chance to help someone in need, do I tell myself it's none of my business, or do I ask if there is anything I can do? When I am hurt by the death of a loved one, or am injured in an accident, do I get angry at God for letting this happen, or do I say with Jesus, "Not my will, but yours be done"? Luke's Gospel ends the temptation of Jesus in the desert with the phrase, "When the devil had finished every test, he left Him until an opportune time" (Luke 4:13). That time came in the garden. and again Jesus had the last word, choosing to do His Father's will. Our temptations continue every day as we face frustrations, desire for things we can't have, unanswered prayers, or our own weaknesses. Even though we know God always does what is best for us when we would rather have what we think is best, at least remember to say, "Not my will, but Yours be done." Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Since a Mass Stipend is truly an offering, the amount is entirely up to the individual scheduling the intention. The only insight we can offer is that the average stipend is approximately $10.00 per scheduled Mass. The offering is truly up to you. Consideration: A Mass stipend is not required, rather it is a customary offering to the Priest. The spiritual value is in the Mass itself. The inability to offer a stipend should never deter someone from scheduling a Mass. April 9, 2017 Saint Eugene Catholic Church 3 Dear Parishioners, Greetings and Peace! This week we enter the holiest time of the liturgical year. We ve had spiritual opportunities this Lent: the first parish mission in years, our annual living stations of the cross presented by our youth, a Lenten reconciliation service, and now Holy Week. One saint said, a single tear on Good Friday reflecting on Jesus passion is worth more than 40 days of penance. Let s connect with the Lord this Holy Week. If possible, please attend the Holy Week Liturgies here as the Universal Church enters into this world wide retreat. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and The Easter Vigil are all at 7:30pm. Easter Sunday the Mass schedule is 8:30, 11:00, and 1:30 (Spanish). Watch and Pray. -Father Pat Estimados feligreses, Saludos y Paz! We look forward to the time when they will be able to begin their service as priests in the Diocese of Charlotte. April 9, 2017 Saint Eugene Catholic Church 7 THINKING OF JOINING THE CATHOLIC CHURCH? Our weekly sessions for R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) have begun. Sessions will take place on Sundays, in the parish parlor, from 9:40 to 10:40am. The journey of faith begins with questions - your questions. What do Catholics believe? How does Catholicism fit in with other faith traditions? The process begins with an inquiry period when questions lead to exploration. Please join us for a fun-filled, faith-filled, Spirit-filled gathering. If you would like to begin this journey of faith, please call our parish office and provide your contact information. (Name, phone number, email address, etc.). A member of the RCIA team will contact you with further information. We will look forward to meeting you and answering your questions. Deacon Mike Zboyovski/828-254- 5193, ext. 20. LOST AND FOUND All items found on our church grounds can be found in our Lost & Found section located at the Coat Rack in the Social Hall not in the church office. You may search this area Monday-Friday 9am-4pm or when the church is open. All items not collected by the end of each month will be donated to Catholic Charities. NOTE: Please be aware that our bulletin is posted on our website; therefore, any information in the bulletin is out there in cyberspace, accessible to anyone. Please let the office know if this is an issue for you. ST. EUGENE'S IN THE LOOP! Yes, our church is now looped! If you have hearing aids with t-coils, please turn them on. If you have a hearing loss, please ask for a Receiver from one of the Greeters/Ushers before you go into the Sanctuary. We want everyone to hear the Word! HOSPITAL ADMISSION OR EXTENDED STAY AT HOME: We would encourage you to celebrate the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick prior to your admission or extended convalescence. Please give us a call to arrange a time and date. Also, you may be unaware that hospitals, by law, will not automatically inform us of your presence there - even if you state your religious affiliation as Catholic on an entrance form. Whether you are hospitalized, recuperating, or simply unable to attend parish services, you or your family member is required to inform us as to your desire for visitation and/or reception of Communion. We will be happy to arrange visitations and reception of Communion once the parish office is notified regarding your wishes. It is our most sincere desire to keep our parish family connected and included, especially in times of dealing with health and recovery issues. A simple call or email is all it takes. Celebration of Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: 828-254-5193 or to arrange a hospital or home visitation and communion: Deacon Mike - 828-254-5193 ext. 20 or deaconmike@steugene.org
