HIGH HOLIDAY BULLETIN TEMPLE EMANUEL OF NORTH JERSEY A traditional, egalitarian, Conservative Congregation September 2017 Tishrei 5778 RABBINICAL REFLECTIONS Dear Friends, Each year, several days before we officially welcome Rosh Hashanah and gather together as a community in numbers unrivalled throughout the year, we customarily hold Selichot services, late on the preceding Saturday evening. This penitential ritual is an opportunity to experience some of the most familiar prayers and melodies of the High Holy Day season to begin in earnest the process of introspection and reconciliation at the heart of the Holidays and to embrace the appropriate inner state required in order to maximize the personal spiritual impact of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. What IS that desired inner state? This year (Saturday, September 16 at 9 p.m.), will answer that question with a unique and innovative program preceding our traditional Selichot service. We will kick off the High Holy Days with a sing-along tribute to the 1960s sensation, comic, parodist, and song-writer Allan Sherman (of Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah fame!). This diverting and ostensibly light-hearted opening to our most sacred season reflects the ancient wisdom of the Mishnah, which records that There were no more joyous or festive days for the People Israel than the Fifteenth of Av and Yom Kippur. The Fifteenth of Av was (and is again) a day dedicated to expressions of romantic love and matchmaking: its joyful nature is self-evident. Yom Kippur is viewed as a time of intense joy because it affords us the opportunity for a new start, a new direction an opportunity to correct our mistakes and to redress our (continued on page 2) A happy and healthy New Year to all שנה טובה ומתוקה High Holy Day Sermons 2017/5778 Rabbi Joseph H. Yom Kippur Yizkor: Charlottesville: Power, White Power, and Ultimate Power

2 TEMPLE EMANUEL NEWS September 2017 RABBINICAL REFLECTIONS (Continued from page 1) shortcomings and failures. A second chance to get it right is cause for joy and celebration and laughter! Despite their formality and sober themes, the High Holy Days are a time of joy. As the Mishnah insists there are no MORE joyous events on the Jewish calendar. No MORE appropriate time to celebrate and enjoy and laugh and revel in life s opportunities. Thus Allan Sherman. While we GREET Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with joy, we DEVOTE those holy days to contemplation of serious and ramified issues. My sermons will address issues such as: the meaning of repentance; the quest for religious pluralism, freedom, and inclusiveness in the State of Israel; what prayer means to twenty-first century Jews living in a secular society; the forces of bigotry and racism in the wake of Charlottesville and other issues confronting us as thoughtful American Jews. Down deep we realize that the privilege of exploring these challenges together with friends and family, neighbors and community as Jews living in unprecedented freedom is ALSO good reason for joy and celebration. THAT joyful privilege is not limited to the ten days of the High Holy Day season. Throughout the year, we at TENJ celebrate and study, discuss and debate, learn and laugh TOGETHER. I urge you to be part of that thoughtful AND joyful process in the words of Kol Nidre from this Yom Kippur to next Yom Kippur. THAT would give us ALL reason for joy! Wishing you a Shanah Tovah U-Metukah a New Year of goodness and sweetness joy, blessing and peace, invites you to join us for our Sixth Annual SEDER HA-SIMANIM Following (brief) Services on the First Night of Rosh Hashana Wednesday, September 20, 2017 6:30 p.m. We greet the New Year while sharing a series of SYMBOLIC FOODS AND DELICACIES, each accompanied with a traditional Blessing expressing our aspirations for the Year ahead!! Seder Ha-Simanim is informal, short and SWEET!!! Children are VERY welcome. Come greet your friends, greet your neighbors and greet the New Year. Rabbi Joseph H. Prouser

September 2017 3 TEMPLE EMANUEL NEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT As we approach the High Holidays of 5778 it affords an opportunity to reflect on the events of the past year and the plans for the future of our beloved. We recall with deep affection the members who helped to shape our destiny and are no longer with us. We shall always be grateful for their efforts on behalf of TENJ. May their memories be for a blessing and their families be comforted knowing of our appreciation for those efforts. It is also time to appreciate and value the tireless efforts of our staff who work so diligently on our behalf. We thank and recognize Iris, Camille and Gustavo without whom we could not function. Of course Rabbi Prouser has established himself and TENJ as a prominent voice in our community. His sermons and comments that are included in frequent publications are of great value and inspiration. Our building has been beautified by the addition of the new window that has been installed in the Rabbi's study. We encourage all to visit with the Rabbi while enjoying the beauty of the window. Despite our inability to start a Hebrew school, we continue to attempt to expand our Congregation and to expose our Jewish community to the many benefits, both spiritual and secular that TENJ offers. Our beautiful building overlooking the park like setting in Franklin Lakes remains a very welcoming invitation to all members and guests who choose to take advantage of our programs. So I close on an optimistic note for the future of our beloved TENJ and wish all a Hearty SHANA TOVA 5778. Thank you.
