Saint Bernadette Catholic Church Butner, North Carolina GOALS AND OBJECTIVES 2011-2012 MISSION STATEMENT Saint Bernadette Parish is an ethnically diverse and welcoming community of Christians. We share the good news of Jesus Christ with the people we serve. We strive to grow more fully as a community in the traditions of the Catholic Faith VISION STATEMENT Recognizing our rich historical heritage, we embrace the future with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. GOAL I: TO NURTURE OUR SPIRITUAL GROWTH RELATIONSHIPS WITH GOD AND EACH OTHER GOAL II: TO PROMOTE CHRISTIAN PARTICIPATION AND NURTURE COMMUNITY (Ecumenical-Civic) SPIRITUAL GROWTH GOAL III: TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE GROWTH OF THE PARISH GOAL IV: TO CELEBRATE OUR MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY

Coversheet: The process used for the development of our Parish Goals and Objectives in conformity with the Diocesan Plan 2010-2013. Throughout the year Councils and Committees review the Parish Mission/Vision Statements and Goals of the Parish and the Objectives of the particular group. In March and April of each year we take a more in-depth look to see which of the objectives have been accomplished, still need to be accomplished, which ones may not be accomplished and which ones may need to be dropped. By May we begin to rewrite our Objectives for the upcoming year. At our May or June meetings we determine our plan for the upcoming fiscal year. The Objectives for the Finance Council and all the standing Committees are presented to the Parish Council at the June meeting for review and approval. This year each Council/Committee identified the seven Diocesan Priorities with numbers 1 through 7. At the end of each of our Goals and Objectives we indicated our compliance in this manner: o If the Goal or Objective fit under Diocesan Priority 1, Goal H we indicated it in this manner. (P1-H).

Parish Council I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationships with God and with each other. (P2-F) a. Recognize the need and support all other parish committees and activities. (P6-A) b. Promote and facilitate parish communications by developing the roles and objectives for the position of parish communications coordinator as well as a working calendar for each committee. (P6-A) c. Provide a retreat for parish leadership-pastoral council and committee chairs focusing on leadership roles in the parish, with a speaker from the Diocesan office to inspire us on a Saturday in October. (P2-I) d. Provide a retreat addressing spiritual needs of the entire ethnic parish by planning an evening retreat on a spiritual basis during Advent or Lent.(P2-1) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth (P2-D) a. Submit news articles for local publication concerning our parish organizations. (P2-D) b. Explore membership in the Chamber of Commerce to strengthen community ties and parish presence. (MS-3) III. To Plan for the Future growth of the parish (P7) a. Continue to develop organizational chart outlining the ministries of our committee. (P3-A) b. Continue to work with the building committee in preparation for future building projects, with emphasis this year on the financial plan (P7-B). a. Make a conscious effort to recognize and celebrate cultural traditions and feast days such as St. Francis, Epiphany, Guadalupe, Blessing of Baskets and Oplatki. (P3-D) b. Continue to recruit members to parish council and other committees. (P3-A) c. To support the development of ministries within our multicultural community by providing mentors. (P3-A)

Finance Council I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationships with God and with each other. (P2-F) a. Help the community understand financial and budgeting processes by giving a presentation after both liturgies by November 2011. (P6-A) b. Improve our communication with the parish by publishing semi-annual financial reports, giving verbal reports, and placing report updates on the bulletin board monthly. (P6-A) c. Work with all committees to develop budgets for the upcoming fiscal year based on their particular needs. (P6-A) d. Meet with the Stewardship Committee quarterly (September, December, March, June). (P6-A) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth. (P2-D) a. Assist the fundraising committee with fundraising activities by helping to count the proceeds and securing money following events and depositing the money into the night deposit box at Suntrust. (P7-) b. Investigate how the parish could become a tithing parish. (P6-E) III. To plan for the future growth of the parish. (P7) a. Continue to work with the Building Committee in preparation for future building projects. This year we will work with them on the Financial Plan for the proposed new building. (P7-B) b. Update out five year financial projection. (P-B) a. Introduce/re national collections, donations to the coins for the poor, and the Food Lion MVP programs. (P6-C) b. Facilitate training sessions and provide mentoring to the Hispanic parishioners about the work of the Finance Council and parish finances. (P6-C) c. Provide education on each national collection and remind the congregation the week previous to the collection at the 3pm mass. (P6-C)

Building Committee I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationships with God and with each other (P2-F) a. Work with the Finance Council and Fund Raising Committee to develop a detailed financing plan for the construction of the initial multi-purpose building at the new site, to be submitted to the Diocese using the Diocesan Financial Plan Pro-forma (P7-A &B). II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth (P2_D) a. Investigate cost of lighting HWY 15 sign with solar lighting (P7-A) b. Organize with the Maintenance Committee 2 brush clearings around the sign at the new site - one in late spring and one in early fall (P6-A) III. To plan for future growth of the parish (P7) a. Continue work with other parish committees (faith formation, liturgy, building, etc.) to maximize use of current space resources to meet immediate growth needs (P7-A) b. Familiarize ourselves with other church design via site visits and studying plans of other churches that are accessible thru the Diocesan office for construction (P7- A) c. Create model of future building to help parish visualize goal (P7-A) a. Plan for the development of ministries and participation among Hispanic members of the parish. (P3-C) b. Ensure that Hispanic members of Finance Council and Fund Raising Committee are included in Goal I(a) and keep Hispanic parish members informed of future building development process (P7-A&D)

Faith Formation I. To nurture our spiritual relationship with God and each other (P2-F) a. Organize a group of parish members who will support Religious Ed Teachers, assist in fund raising activity, and generally help where needed. (P2-K) b. Continue to develop and mentor Youth Groups (P2-D) c. Work in conjunction with the Liturgy Committee in introducing the changes in the Roman Missal (P2-F) d. Cooperate with the Liturgy Committee in training the children and youth to participate in youth masses (P2-G, F) e. Train students in the procedures of an altar sever (P2-I) f. Offer parental instructional meetings throughout the year (P2-K) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth (P2-D) a. Assist the Fund Raising Committee in coordinating volunteers for the Butner Chicken Pickin (P2-J) b. Support the Knights of Columbus in the Butner-Creedmoor Christmas parade. (P2-J) III. To plan for the future growth of our parish (P7) a. Offer two adult programs per year (P2-A) b. Encourage catechists to attend at least one catechetical training session (P2-A) c. Seek Hispanic/English catechist aides (P2-A) a. Provide education for all members of the parish on the Hispanic/English Feast Days and celebrations that are commemorated in the parish and the Diocese (P2- D), (P3-D)

Fundraising Committee I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationships with God and with each other. a. Focus the resources and efforts of all members of the parish to raise money for the building of our new church. (P6-A) b. Keep the parish informed of our activities by publishing a semi-annual financial report to the Finance Council and to the St. Bernadette web site of upcoming events and fundraising results. (P7-B) c. Create ongoing fellowship opportunities through communication and mutual project development. (P6-C) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth. a. Conduct a quarterly recruitment drive for new Fundraising Committee members to include all areas of the parish community and with particular emphasis on new church members. (P6-A) b. Develop leaders by providing semi-annual leadership and team building workshops with emphasis on Fundraising activity. (P6-C) c. Publish Fundraising Committee meetings and events on the St. Bernadette Church web site calendar and weekly church bulletin. (P6-A) d. Actively promote and advertise all large St. Bernadette fundraising events (to include print news releases, radio, web social media and other forms of digital media). (P5-E) III. To plan for the future growth of the parish a. Establish an annual monetary goal to raise funds for our new church based upon needs expressed by the Building Committee. (P7-B) b. Inform the entire church of the progress toward fundraising goals on a quarterly basis. (P5-E) c. Develop an ongoing annual master list of St. Bernadette Church fundraising projects. From that list, implement a minimum of 1 project per quarter.(p6-d) IV. To embrace the multi-cultural community in recognizing and celebrating cultural traditions and feast days. a. Ensure that a minimum of two representatives from each mass maintain membership of the Fundraising Committee. (P6-C) b. Create and sponsor a minimum of 1 large, annual fundraising activity that seeks to breakdown any existing barriers regarding language or culture. We are One St. Bernadette s Church Family. (P6-D)

Liturgy Committee I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationships with God and with each other ( P2-F) a. Offer instruction on the theology of building a new church and church construction. (P2-A) b. Develop Parish guidelines for the Sacraments and for Cultural celebrations (P2-E) c. Work on the implementation of the Roman Missal by following the time line the committee established. (P2-F) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth. (P2-D) a. Encourage parishioners to support prayer services in the ecumenical community. Ex. Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service. (P1-C) b. Encourage parishioners to serve as visitors or Eucharistic Ministers in local Institutions. (P1-C) III. To plan for the future growth of the parish. (P2) a. Choir will learn new compositions of Mass parts and present them to the congregation by Advent. (P2-F) b. Hold retreat/workshop for all liturgical ministries in October or November of 2011 on the Roman Missal. (P2-F) c. Continue the study the USCCB document Built of Living Stones (P7-A) a. Support the development of the Hispanic Leadership Team by giving assistance in training Liturgical Ministers and/or finding a suitable trainer for our Hispanic ministries. (P3-A) b. Assist in the development of a Liturgy committee for the Hispanic mass. (P3-A) c. Encourage different ethnic groups in the parish to request the celebration of feasts that are unique to their heritage. Ask them to instruct the parish on the meaning and importance of these traditions or customs. (P3-A)

Maintenance Committee I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationships with God and with each other (P7) a. Attend to the church property in order to facilitate unity and prayer by keeping the property attractive and in good repair. (P7) b. Organize a least 4 clean up days throughout the year at the Church and Parish House. (P7) c. Submit a fall Parish Assistance Grant to the Diocese to put wainscoting in the sacristy and the front classroom/crying room. (P7) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth (P-D) a. Assist the Knights of Columbus in building the float for the Butner/Creedmoor s Christmas parades. (P2-D) b. Assist with the set-up and tear-down for the chicken pickin. (P2-D III. To plan for the future growth of the parish (P2) a. Appoint a representative of the Maintenance Committee to the Building Committee to work on the plans for the future church facility. (P7) a. Encourage participation from many cultures on the Maintenance Committee and work projects by and inviting people individually to join in maintenance projects. (P6-C)

Social Committee I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationships with God and with each other. (P2-F) a. Continue to support members of Social Committee and encourage participation of members in meetings, activities and events. (P6-GA) b. Plan and carry out a retreat for the Social Committee members. (P2-I) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth (P2-D) a. Provide support and assistance to other committees and projects. (P6-A) b. Explore ways to nurture and increase the participation of church members in activities and events. (P6-G2) III. To plan for the future growth of the parish (P2) a. Plan two Social Committee fundraisers with proceeds to go toward special projects and / or needs of the church. (P6-GD) b. Increase members of the Social Committee to include men and youth.(p6-g2) a. Continue to communicate with Hispanic Community regarding church wide social events and activities. (P3-GD) b. Plan activities and /or events to recognize and celebrate cultural traditions and feast days. (P3-GD)

Stewardship Committee I. To nurture our spiritual growth, relationship with God and with each other. (P2-F) a. Develop stewardship ideas for children by inviting faith formation to participate in execution of stewardship ideas. These ideas will be presented to the teachers and catechist meeting in August, 2011. Stewardship ideas will be presented during Vacation Bible School (P6-A) and Faith Formation Classes. (P-2-K). b. Ask artistic participation from the parish to help create a St. Bernadette Logo. c. Select a method to honor volunteers in 2011-2012. d. Complete a list of volunteers and their works and send a thank you note using the new parish logo. (P6-A) e. The second Sunday in October 2011 will be Stewardship Sunday. We will recognize the volunteers with a reception. (P6-A) f. Have quarterly meetings with the Finance Committee in order to unify the concept of time, talent, and treasure. (P6-E) g. Re-educate ourselves on the meaning of stewardship through the use of the Stewardship Sourcebook and diocesan material. (P6-E) II. To promote Christian participation and nurture community spiritual growth (P2-D) a. Support Food Pantry and Back Pack Programs throughout the year by Butner Council (P1-C) b. To plan for the future growth of the parish (P2) c. By Second Sunday of October 2011, Stewardship will re-introduce the concept of time, talent and treasure using the Dioceses Trifold as a means to support the parish.(p-a) d. A packet of information for new parishioners has been developed. It will be presented by members of the stewardship committee when they are welcomed to the parish. (P6- A&C) e. Assist the Finance Committee in giving a presentation on the church budget. This will include what is covered by the offering and what is needed. This will coordinate with Gospels on Stewardship and the homily by May, 2012. (P6-E) III. To embrace our multicultural community (P3) a. Support the ministries and participation of our Multicultural members of the parish by continuing to invite and encourage all members to serve on committees and to participate in church activities as one group under God. (P6-C and P7-I)
