FEAST OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE HOLY CROSS The Feast of the Discovery of the Holy Cross is one of the four feasts dedicated to Christ s Holy Christ. In 327 AD Heghineh, the Mother of the Byzantine King Kostandianos, visits Jerusalem with the aim to search the holy Cross of the lord. A Jew, named Judas, helps the King s mother to search the site where Christ was crucified Golgotha. In the result of searches the wooden crosses of Christ and the two criminals crucified together with him are found. For recognizing the Lord s Cross, the remains of a young man are put on the crosses in turn. On one of the crosses the young man rises to life and thus the Lord s Cross is identified. After that miracle the Jew converts to Christianity and later becomes the Bishop Cyril of Jerusalem. After the discovery of the Holy Cross Heghineh renovates the Holy Places of Jerusalem and builds the Church of Holy Resurrection of Golgotha, where later the Lord s cross is installed. The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the Feast of the Discovery of the Holy Cross on the Sunday during the period October 23-29. Çõï êáõñµ ʳãÇ Գիւտ Խաչը, Խաչվերացի կիրակիէն վեց շաբաթ յետոյ կիրակի օր կը տօնուի: Խաչին գիւտը տեղի ունեցած է Կոստանդիանոս Կայսեր մօր Հեղինէի ջանքերով: Խաչը, Քրիստոնեայ հաւատացեալին պահապաննէ եւ չարին դէմ մղուած բարի պատերազմին զէնքը: Գիւտ Խաչը, Քրիստոսի Խաչափայտին գտնուելուն յիշատակութիւնն է Կոստանդիանոսի մայրը Հեղինէ Երուսաղէմ այցելեց Ս. Տեղերը պատուելու եւ Քրիստոսի խաչը գտնելուն պատակով Յուդա անունով բանգէտ հրեայ մը օգնեց իրեն Գողգոթային վայրը ճշդելու համար եւ սկսան պեղումները, այսպէս 20 թիզ խորութեան ներքեւ երեք խաչեր իրարուքով գտնուեցան, բայց անհնարէր ճշգրիտ կերպով զատել Քրիստոսի Խաչը միւս երկու աւազակներու խաչերէն. այն ատեն նոյն ժամուն մեռած պատանիի մը դիակը դրին իւրաքանչիւր խաչի վրայ սպասելով հրաշքի մը, երրորդ խաչին վրայ դնելով պատանին յարութիւն առաւ ասով ճանչցան բուն Խաչը Հրեայ բանգէտ Յուդան այս հրաշքէն ետք քրիստոնեայ դարձաւ ապա եղաւ եպիսկոպոս առնելով Կիւրեղ անունը ու իր մօր Աննայի հետ նահատակուեցաւ Խաչափայտը Հեղինէի ձեռքով զետեղուեցաւ Երուսաղէմի մեծ տաճարին մէջ, եւ 400 տարի շարունակ հոն մնաց Խաչին գիւտը տեղի ունեցաւ 326-ին:
TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS The first reading is from the Second Letter of Paul to Corinthians (1:18-24) For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate. Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. The second reading is from the Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Matthew 24:27-36 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather. "Immediately after the distress of those days" "the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken." "Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. "Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

CLERGY CONFERENCE AND DIOCESAN ASSEMBLY APRIL 30TH MAY 6TH, 2018 Dear Parishioners: St. Gregory the Enlightener Church is the host parish for the Clergy Conference and Diocesan Assembly occurring between Monday, April 30th and Sunday, May 6th. Our bid was accepted over a year ago and we are thrilled to be coordinating all the activities for this conference/assembly, which also will mark the 50th anniversary of St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral. Please "Hold the Date" for Friday, May 4th for our banquet. We would love to see all of our St. Gregory families be a part of this special occasion as we welcome all those who are coming from our sister churches. Maria Stepanian has been leading this monumental endeavor with a core group of dedicated volunteers. She has already secured the venue for both events and the Renaissance Westchester Hotel has accommodated our requests. Details to Follow. HEK YOUTH HALL SPORT ACTIVITIES We are happy to announce that the HEK Youth Hall is ready to be used by our youth and community members. Our Youth Hall Committee members are working hard to organize sports activities and teams for the children and the youth. We are currently organizing youth basketball and volleyball teams, also looking for basketball and volleyball coaches who can volunteer their time and talent to coach the children and the youth of our community.
