Thank you for joining us for worship this morning. We gather for worship so that we can receive from God the good news of what Jesus has done for us. Jesus is at the center of our faith and our lives. Without him we have nothing. With him we have everything. Welcome Worshiper Cards are located in the book racks. Please fill one out and place it in the offering plate later in the service. Restrooms are located in the entryway. Two Nursery-Rooms are available in the entryway for parents with small children. Footnotes throughout the worship folder help explain the different parts of the service. TODAY S FOCUS For forty days we followed our Savior in his battle against sin. Having celebrated his victory from the grave on Easter Sunday, we now spend fifty days rejoicing in the spoils of war that are ours in him. Today we rejoice that access to the Father is given through his Son. Our need to be at one with the God who made us is satisfied because of what Christ our Savior has done. PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP Jesus, you are the Way the Way to the Father, the Way to the truth, the Way to forgiveness, the Way to renewal, the Way to refreshment, the Way to life everlasting. May we never stray from your Way. And may we never stop looking ahead to all that you have prepared for us on our road of life. Guiding Lord, lead us to the glory yet to come. In your name, I pray. Amen. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Flowers adorning our altar this morning are given to the glory of God by Vickie Stone in loving memory of her mother, Rose and late husband, Wayne and by the Hejnal family in celebration of Dominic s birthday. M: Jesus said, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. C: No one comes to the Father except through me. M: Alleluia! Christ is risen! C: He is risen, indeed! Alleluia! OPENING HYMN Christ Be My Leader Christian Worship #367 CALL TO WORSHIP M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. CONFESSION OF SINS M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord have mercy on me, a sinner. LORD, HAVE MERCY (KYRIE) ABSOLUTION M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. 2

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord. 3

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Let us pray. Almighty God, your Son, Jesus Christ, is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help us to be faithful to him to death and to receive life eternal. He lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. THE WORD OF GOD CHILDREN S MESSAGE Children are invited to come forward for a children s devotion in the front of church. FIRST LESSON 1 Kings 18:16-45 The Lord is the one true God among many false gods. SO OBADIAH WENT TO MEET AHAB AND TOLD HIM, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, Is that you, you troubler of Israel? 18 I have not made trouble for Israel, Elijah replied. But you and your father s family have. You have abandoned the LORD s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel s table. 20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him. But the people said nothing. 22 Then Elijah said to them, I am the only one of the LORD s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire he is God. Then all the people said, What you say is good. 25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire. 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. Baal, answer us! they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made. 4

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. Shout louder! he said. Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened. 28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention. 30 Then Elijah said to all the people, Come here to me. They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, Your name shall be Israel. 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed. 33 He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood. 34 Do it again, he said, and they did it again. Do it a third time, he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench. 36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again. 38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. 39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, The LORD he is God! The LORD he is God! 40 Then Elijah commanded them, Seize the prophets of Baal. Don t let anyone get away! They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there. 41 And Elijah said to Ahab, Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain. 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. 43 Go and look toward the sea, he told his servant. And he went up and looked. There is nothing there, he said. Seven times Elijah said, Go back. 44 The seventh time the servant reported, A cloud as small as a man s hand is rising from the sea. So Elijah said, Go and tell Ahab, Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you. 45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. 5

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 33 The Church sings of her heavenly Bridegroom, who upholds all things by his Word for the sake of his Bride. We will sing the psalm in unison. Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. For the Word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. Refrain The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 6

SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 2:4-10 Jesus is the one precious cornerstone on which the church is built. AS YOU COME TO HIM, THE LIVING STONE rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame. 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, 8 and, A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. They stumble because they disobey the message which is also what they were destined for. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. VERSE OF THE DAY John 14:6 Alleluia. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Alleluia. I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord. Alleluia. After the reading of the verse of the day the congregation sings: Alleluia is a word that comes to us from Hebrew, the language of the Old Testament. Another form of this word you might be familiar with is Hallelujah. Both mean, Praise the Lord! 7

GOSPEL LESSON John 14:1-12 No one comes to the Father except through Jesus, the way. After the announcement of the Gospel, the congregation sings: D o not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going. 5 Thomas said to him, Lord, we don t know where you are going, so how can we know the way? 6 Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. 8 Philip said, Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us. 9 Jesus answered: Don t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? 10 Don t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. After the Gospel, the congregation sings: 8

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY At the Lamb s High Feast We Sing Christian Worship #141 SERMON 1 Peter 2:4-10 Christ Is Our Cornerstone 1. We build on him 2. We live for him Jesus said, Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. (Matthew 10:32) When we speak the creed (usually the Apostle s or Nicene Creeds), we are joining together to publically confess our faith in Christ. This confession unites us with Christians around the world and those saints who have gone before us. 9

CREATE IN ME THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER THE OFFERING The members of St, Peter Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Guests at St. Peter are welcome to participate in the offering but need not feel obligated to do so. 10

Guide us in the use of all that you have intrusted to us; our time, our talents, and our treasures. C: Risen Lord, live in us that we may live for you. M: Merciful Lord Jesus, grant healing to the sick, and strengthen the faith of the suffering and the dying. Assure them of your abiding presence, and comfort them with the hope of eternal life. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. M: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. M: Gracious Father, you have restored to us the joy of your salvation. With happy hearts we come before you and say: C: Alleluia! Thanks be to God! Amen. LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 11

The Victory s Won Christian Worship Supplement #145 stanzas 1-3 We thank all those with us this morning who are mothers. We thank God that he has equipped you with such an important task. And we thank God that he continues to give you the strength to accomplish what he lays before you. 12

The History of Mother s Day Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) first suggested the national observance of an annual day honoring all mothers because she had loved her own mother so dearly. At a memorial service for her mother on May 10, 1908, Miss Jarvis gave a carnation (her mother s favorite flower) to each person who attended. Within the next few years, the idea of a day to honor mothers gained popularity, and Mother s Day was observed in a number of large cities in the U.S. On May 9, 1914, by an act of Congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mother s Day. He established the day as a time for public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country. By then it had become customary to wear white carnations to honor departed mothers and red to honor the living, a custom that continues to this day.
