The Rev. Gregory S. Michel, Pastor pastorgmichel@yahoo.com St. Matthew Lutheran Church 115 West 12th Avenue, Milan IL 61264 Phone 309.787-4295 Fax 309.787.4312 www.stmatthewmilan.org Mr. Gregory G. Mueller, DCE dcehog@derbyworks.net TODAY WE CELEBRATE THE LORD S SUPPER At St. Matthew we believe that the Lord s Supper (Holy Communion) is a ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and an expression of our unity in belief and teaching. Therefore, in Christian love we extend this ministry to baptized Christians who Have been properly instructed and confess the teachings of the Bible as taught in The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS); Acknowledge their sins and repent of their sins; Confess Jesus Christ alone as Savior from all sin; Believe with us that Christ s body and blood are truly present in, with, and under the bread Mr. Joel Chapman, RN, Parish Nurse joelchapman1955@yahoo.com 309.948.4652 (cell) Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost LWML Sunday October 1 & 2, 2016 WELCOME TO THE LORD S HOUSE We pray that you are blessed through God s service today. We invite everyone to sign the Record of Fellowship in each pew. Our guests are also invited to sign the guest book on the Welcome Table in the entryway. and wine; Intend, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to amend their sinful lives and forgive others as Christ has forgiven them. Guests who do not hold membership in a congregation of the LCMS are respectfully asked to visit with the pastor before or after the worship service regarding their desire to commune. Martin Luther s Christian Questions with Their Answers on pages 329-330 in Lutheran Service Book is a good resource to use to prepare oneself to receive the Lord s Supper. NOTES FOR COMMUNION DISTRIBUTION Receive the bread the body of Christ in your hand. You may receive the wine the blood of Christ with either the individual cup or the common cup. Please assist with the common cup. The individual cups in the center of the tray contain reduced alcohol wine for those that need to receive Christ s blood this way. Those not receiving the Sacrament but wish to receive a blessing (including non-confirmed children) are asked to take a wooden cross from the basket next to the baptismal font. Hold the cross in front of you as the communion elements are distributed. As you then return to your pew, please place the cross in the basket next to the collection tray for individual cups.

Humble faith (Luke 17:5; 2 Timothy 1:5), conversational testifying (2 Timothy 1:8), servant tasks (Luke 17:10), and suffering itself (Habakkuk 1:2-4; 2 Timothy 1:12) like broken-bodied Jesus bring life and immortality to light (2 Timothy 1:10). Almighty Maker, establish us in Your simple truth that we may witness and participate in Your LIFE QUOTE FOR THIS WEEK Parents also do well in preparing young men and women for the realities of married life. Because of the Fall, marriage is hard work. It requires appreciation of our differences as male and female, the commitment to work together, trust, friendship, and more agape than eros love. Linda Bartlett, former president of Lutherans For Life A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life www.lutheransforlife.org OUR CHRISTIAN CALLING Luke 17:10 So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.' We can never put God in our debt. Even if we lived in perfect compliance with the Law we would still only be unworthy servants. Our giving to the Lord s work in the Church is a sign that we recognize our role as servants, and our need for that work of the Lord in the Church that blesses us with His Word and Sacraments. HISTORIC, AUTHENTIC CHRISTIAN RADIO You can listen to expert guests discuss topics like: St. Michael & All Angels, Defending the Christian Faith in the Classroom, The Prophet Gideon, Translator of Scripture Jerome, Liturgical Colors and more. Issues, Etc. is a radio talk show produced by Lutheran Public Radio in Collinsville, IL and hosted by LCMS Pastor Todd Wilken. You can listen to what you want when you want at www.issuesetc.org and on the Lutheran Public Radio mobile app. DINING TOUR COUPON BOOKS St. Matthew Youth Ministry is selling Dining Tour Coupon books again this year. In the books are over 200, two-for-one coupons that can be used at local restaurants. The cost of the books are $35.00 and the youth group gets to keep $10.00. The books are good until November 2017.

(309-799-7503) CALLED TO VOTE SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY IN OCTOBER Join us for Adult Bible study Sunday mornings at during the month of October as we explore the topic: Called to Vote: A Christian s Approach to Elections. Whether you re certain of whom you re voting for this November or still deciding whether to vote at all, this study is for you. While this month-long study will not provide a voting guide it won t lead you to a specific candidate or party platform it will spark thoughtful and biblical conversation about voting in a government such as ours as well as our duty as Christian citizens. So before you head to the polls this November, join us for this study. You ll be convicted, encouraged, and more prepared than ever to participate in the political process. After all, we are all called to vote! This study will help you understand how we do so as a result of being moved by the love of Christ, who first loved us. The author of the study LCMS pastor Ken Schurb reminds us that we go to the polls informed by God s Word and our own best thinking. But we should never forget to distinguish between the two. All are invited each Sunday morning at LWML BIBLE CLASS AND LWML MEETING October 6, 9:30 a.m. Bible Study: Rejoice #3 Gentleness Leader: Nancy Mueller Hostess: Carole Hartley Meet in St. Matthew Gathering Room 10:30 a.m. LWML Meeting following Bible Class PASTOR S TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY We will not meet Tuesday, October 4, as Pastor will be at the District Pastors Conference that day. We will resume Tuesday, October 11. Our current topic is A Man Named Martin-Part Two: The Moment. This videobased study produced by Lutheran Hour Ministries examines the interplay of personalities and events that led to the Protestant Reformation, a theological overhaul set in motion most notably by Martin Luther's nailing of the 95 Theses to the church door at Wittenberg. From Luther s inner struggles of conscience and faith to his call for debate with the Pope to his scathing rebuke of erroneous church practice, we will examine the widespread teachings and doctrines of the late Medieval Church that were not Scripturally grounded, and how Luther addressed them. Among them were purgatory, penance, indulgences, masses for the dead, and the institution of the papacy. A cast of scholars and professional church workers share their expertise on the cultural and religious setting in which Luther operated. All are invited to join us each Tuesday morning at 9:00. LADIES WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY Explore the misunderstandings and mysteries about faith-how this relationship effects our culture-and how you can biblically respond. We will be studying Heaven and Hell which uncovers common misunderstandings people have about biblical teaching on life after death. It tells the truth about hell and describes the everlasting joy that awaits all who trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior. Come join us on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Hope to see you there!
