Prayer for Healing and the Laying on of Hands During the service on the first Sunday of the month, we include prayers for healing and the laying on of hands. Prayer for healing is a public act of worship in which the ministry of healing proclaims and offers the wholeness of the gospel of grace to people (body, mind and spirit) and to their communities. We believe that Jesus Christ, through his life, death and resurrection, brought wholeness to people in mind, body and spirit. We believe that Christ is alive and touches our lives with the transforming love of God. We are invited to open our hearts to Jesus that his love may come into the most painful places of our lives whether in body, mind or spirit. It is often in the troubled times that we will be offered healing, even though we do not know the way in which God will do this. Those who pray with you have no special power, only a dedicated belief that God desires wholeness and health for all. Healing does not mean cure. Prayers for healing open up all areas of our lives relationships, ideas, emotions, spirit, body, work, nature to the transforming power of God in Christ. Our healing liturgy involves prayer and the laying on of hands. At times we may include anointing. Ritual touch in one form or another, either through the laying on of hands or through anointing, has always been part of the church s ministry to the sick. The New Testament describes Jesus, and others, praying for those in need and also laying hands on them. Touch can be comforting and healing. Laying on of hands communicates God s blessing, and also the support of the Body of Christ, remembering that when one member suffers the entire body suffers. All who wish to receive prayer and the laying on of hands are invited to come forward to the minister(s). Others may prefer to remain seated and pray silently. Matthew 7:24-29 Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell and great was its fall! Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes. Proverbs 3:5-8 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body. We welcome Gaylene Hennan and thank her for sharing her music with us this evening. We also thank the Tinnitus Handbell Choir for their musical contribution.
