SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 28, 2017 From the Desk of Fr. Ron, The composer, Carly Simon created a hit song called Anticipation. The refrain lyrics were: Anticipation, Anticipation is making me late, is keeping me waiting. This piece was then modified and used as an advertising jingle for Heinz Ketchup. It speaks of two realities; that of Anticipation and Waiting. While anticipation is looked upon favorably, waiting is not too acceptable for most of us. In our current culture, waiting is tolerated but not valued. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles this weekend, after the Ascension event on Mt. Olivet, the disciples returned to the upper room where all things began with the celebration of the last supper. It was in this room that Jesus instituted the memorial sacrifice of His Body and Blood; in this room that they beheld the Risen Lord on the Day of Resurrection. It is in this room now they sit and wait. They devote themselves to prayer and recollection about the life of Jesus and waited for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit. Psalm 27:13-14, encourages us: I believe I shall see the LORD s goodness in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD, take courage; be stouthearted, wait for the LORD! At the beginning of an academic initiative we often wish we could fast track to the end, get our degree and be done with it already. It is a powerful lesson if we, when challenged, can learn to enjoy the ride to our degree. Years of monastic life have taught the Christian Community the joy of Anticipation and the vocation of Waiting upon the Lord. Let us be courageous and accept the challenge offered to us in the Biblical lessons this weekend. Wait for the Lord, take courage; be stouthearted, wait for the Lord! Pastoral Associate News by Amy Vossen Vukelic In - Reach Children Liturgy of the Word Leaders and Aides needed. Offered at 9:30 Masses, adult leaders offer the Liturgy of the Word to children ages 3-9 years. Aides offer support and assistance to the leaders. We are looking to increase our Leadership team, and invite anyone who may be interested to observe a session during the month of June. For more information, please contact Amy. Do you know someone who could have a drug addiction? Today we offer the second excerpt from an article written by a former addict, Adam Cook, of Addiction Hub (www.addictionhub.org), offering practical ways to address your concerns: Watching someone you love endure pain and suffering is heartbreaking. You want to help in any way you can, whether it s by offering advice or assisting them in finding someone else to help. If someone you love is suffering from substance abuse, you may not know exactly what to say or what to do, but you can support them in finding treatment. The Talk When speaking, be supportive and sincerely listen to responses, but remain firm in your course of action. Talk and listen so that it s a true conversation, not a lecture. Instead of using a moralistic tone about substance abuse, note the consequences you ve observed for the person and their family and friends. Don t demand your loved one stop using. Your goal is to make your loved one aware that you re concerned and that he/she may need treatment. Calmly state that you believe substance use is occurring, provide all evidence, and express what you want the person to do about it. If the discussion becomes too emotional or seems to be going nowhere, postpone the conversation and become better prepared. You can try speaking with a counselor to help you find effective techniques that work naturally for you. Outreach: Put your faith into action. The United Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Justice, Peace, and Human Development, publishes Notes for Neighbors, which offers stories and ways that we can love our neighbor in our own backyard and on the other side of the globe.
