St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish January 28, 2018 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Pastor s Corner He taught as one having authority Mark 1:21 The people in the gospel today are astonished at the teaching of Jesus. It was said of Him He taught with authority. There was something compelling about Jesus s word. Last week the first disciples heard Jesus word come and follow me. Without hesitation they drop everything and became His followers. Today Jesus by His word heals a man possessed by a devil. When Jesus spoke everyone was compelled to listen. He alone speaks with the finality of the voice of God. It is the voice and word of Jesus that speaks the definitive truth of what it means to be a human being. The demons cry out to Jesus have you come to destroy us? Absolutely that is the mission of Jesus, to deliver us from every evil. There are destructive forces everywhere today, evil forces that come to take over our lives. The desire for worldly goods, recreational drugs, alcohol, pornography or other addiction that can take over and dominate our lives. Dancing with these demons can only lead to heartache and disappointment. Today we pause to give thanks for St Hilary s Catholic School. Here the liberating voice of Jesus echoes through the hallways and classrooms. Here our children learn that there us one Lord Jesus Christ. When we put ourselves under His domain we are free to embrace our true and best selves. Here at the Eucharist Jesus calls is to trust in His authority. His power alone can still and silent those raging and uncomfortable forces that try to take over and lead us away from God. Save the Date: February 24th St. Hilary s Annual Spaghetti Super Burial & Cremation Pope Francis through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has issued instructions regarding the burial of the deceased especially those who choose cremation. This instruction should help to maintain and recognize the human body as a living temple of Gods presence. Proper respect for the deceased and their remains must always be upheld. Copies on the guidelines are available at the rectory DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL? The Tribunal is available to help people who have experience and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. One on the durable bond of marriage. This is God s law. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Even though a Catholic marriage was celebrated, perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, understanding or ability? The annulment procedure addresses these circumstances. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office at 222 North l7th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103 (215) 587.3750 Page 3/ January 28, 2018 An evening of family fun for everyone! Archbishop Chaput launched the 2018 Catholic Charities Appeal (CCA), the single largest fundraiser initiative in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The theme for this year s Appeal is 60 Years of Giving Hope to All and the fundraising goal is $12.5 million. As Archbishop Chaput said, For 60 years, generous people like you have responded to Christ s call to help those in need by donating over $290 million dollars. For 60 years, you have enables us to feed the hungry, give shelter to the homeless, and comfort the afflicted. By supporting the Catholic Charities Appeal, you are helping students with special needs receive the Catholic Education they deserve, you are helping desperate families get back on their feet, and helping to bring joy to the lives of the aged and lonely. Many things have changed since 1958, when the Archdiocese of Philadelphia launched the Catholic Charities Appeal, but some things remain the same 60 years later poverty, hunger, and homelessness still remain serious challenges in our community. This year our St. Hilary of Poitiers parish goal for this important Appeal is $40,252.00 Thank you for your support. Please remember in your prayers the soul of Catherine Carroll who died on Wednesday January 17th. She is survived by her brother, our former Pastor, Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Carroll and one sister.
