01-29-2017 PARISH LIFE Page 3 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Second Reading Gospel Reading Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 Matthew 5:1-12 A Message from Father Don Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Can you imagine a series of commercials telling people that the way to be truly happy is to be hungry for justice, poor in spirit, and single-hearted? Viewers might well wonder where these strange messages are coming from. In today s Gospel, we learn that the way in which we choose to see and help others and how we choose to live our lives impacts how blessed we truly are. This message come from Jesus Sermon on the Mount and are called the Beatitudes. Jesus gave these to us to help us walk the path of littleness, of mercy, and of forgiveness. Jesus knew that life, perhaps life as a Christian, could be difficult. He knew that there were things to be sorrowing about, that people needed mercy, that conflicts and persecutions would come. In all of these situations, Jesus tells us, we are blest. And if we are merciful, try to make peace, and try to be holy, we will be consoled and rewarded not with riches, or power, or influence but by God, by joy, by peace. This week, spend some time reflecting on this passage and on the Beatitudes. How have they lifted your hopes and stirred your desire to fulfill God s will? Discern how you can open yourself to God, joy and peace. How can you renew your life for the sake of others? Know that if we desire a peaceful world, we need to use our gifts that all may be blessed. Friday, February 3rd FEAST OF ST. BLAISE The Rite of the Blessing of Throats will be held after the 7:00am and 8:30am Masses 3
