PRELUDE Borning Cry Praise Band WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS A LITANY HONORING MOTHERS AND ALL PARENTS God commands: Honor your father and your mother. So, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12) It is the first commandment that contains a promise. We rejoice in God s gift of mothers and fathers, who gave us life in the land in which we dwell. God has given this walk of life, motherhood and fatherhood, a special position of honor, higher than that of any other walk of life under it. You are to esteem parents above all things and to value them as the most precious treasure on earth. If I am to do good and holy works, I know of none better than to give honor and obedience to my parents, for God himself has commanded it. What God commands must be much nobler than anything we ourselves may devise. And because there is no greater or better teacher than God, there will certainly be no better teaching than God himself gives. (Martin Luther: The Large Catechism) Let us pray: Almighty God, with a mother's love and a father's care you have blessed us with the joy and responsibility of children. As we bring them up, give us gracious love, calm strength, and patient wisdom, that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of Jesus Christ, our Savior. GATHERING HYMN Morning Has Broken ELW 556 GREETING Alleluia! Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. May we so learn to fear and love you, O God, so that we neither despise nor anger our parents and others in authority, but instead honor, serve, obey, love, and respect them. In the name of the one who gave himself for us that we might live, Jesus Christ our Lord. (Adapted from Luther s Explanation of the 4 th Commandment in the Small Catechism.) CHILDREN S SERMON Sixth Sunday of Easter May 10, 2015 ~ 8:30 a.m. Central Lutheran Church Mondovi, Wisconsin www.centralmondovi.org SPECIAL MUSIC Although I Speak With Angel s Tongue Praise Band PREPARATION READING: Matthew 11:25-30 25 At that time Jesus said, "I thank you, from the wise and the intelligent and Father, Lord of heaven and earth, have revealed them to infants; 26 yes, because you have hidden these things Father, for such was your gracious
will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SCRIPTURE SONG Jesus Loves Me vs 1 ELW 595 FOCUS READING: Romans 5:1-11 Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. 9 Much more surely then, now that we have been justified by his blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, much more surely, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life. 11 But more than that, we even boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY Amazing Grace ELW 779 A BLESSING OF MOTHERS Gracious God, in love you have given us the gift of mothers. Grant to each of them your power and grace. Strengthen them in their mothering with tenderness and understanding, with compassion and joy. Endow them with wisdom and knowledge so that they might teach their children how to live and how to love; how to seek and pursue that which is right and true; how to turn away from all that is hurtful and wrong. Deepen their own faith so that they might instill in their children a love for you that will sustain and keep them their whole life long. We ask this in Jesus' name.
