April 19, 2009 St. Florian Parish Page Three The Paschal Octave and Divine Mercy Sunday Easter is the Feast of Feasts, the Solemnity of Solemnities, the Church s highest feast, the holiest day of the year. Liturgically, the eight days of Easter constitute a single day, the day of the new creation. The Church begins celebrating at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday and continues through the Octave of Easter: Every day is another Easter, another day to rejoice in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus! After his resurrection, Jesus took great care to show his apostles his hands and side, pointing to the wounds of the Passion, especially the wound in his heart, the source from which flows the great wave of mercy poured out on humanity. Since 2000, the Church has designated the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday to celebrate the fact that Jesus still calls us to immerse ourselves in his mercy and love. The Divine Mercy devotion has grown greatly in popularity since Pope John Paul II declared the Second Sunday of Easter Divine Mercy Sunday when he canonized the Polish saint Faustina Kowalska on April 30, 2000. Saint Faustina s revelations put a great emphasis on this day as a day of mercy. The familiar image of the Divine Mercy shows two beams of light radiating from the heart of Christ, imaging the water and blood we heard about in today s Second Reading (1 John 5:6). The Divine Mercy chaplet is prayed using Rosary beads, with special texts emphasizing the saving Passion of Christ. The Resurrection of Christ is the very miracle of mercy that has forever changed our destiny as God s sons and daughters. In Easter joy we recall that great miracle and its promise to us. We once again ask you to participate in a special fundraiser to help The Women s Center of Greater Chicagoland. The Center counsels women in crisis pregnancy with kindness, gentleness, prayer and compassion. Approximately 5000+ women go there a year deciding on their child s future life or death. They assist women materially by providing diapers, formula, clothes, slightly used car seats, high chairs, strollers and toys. Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, The Rosary and The Divine Mercy Chaplet are said daily for all women struggling with their pregnancies. This fundraiser will begin at St. Florian next weekend (April 25/26). We will distribute baby bottles after each Mass for you to take home and put your spare change into. Please return the bottles to the Church or at the Rectory no later than the weekend of Mother s Day - May 9/10. Thank you for participating in the opportunity to give a child his/her first breath. 2010 Mass Book: The 2010 Mass Book is now open. Please stop by the rectory to make arrangements for mass intentions in memory of your family members or friends. We also have Masses available in our 2009 Book.
