Dissertation: The Concept of Aptitude (Ἐπιτηδειότης) in Late Antique and Early Christian Thought Supervisors: Torstein Theodor Tollefsen, Eyjólfur Kjalar Emilsson Description: This dissertation studies a rather neglected subject in late ancient thought, that of ἐπιτηδειότης, rendered with aptitude. The concept is important for an understanding of developments in Late Antique philosophy, both pagan and Christian. The topic is especially treated in the thought of Plotinus, Proclus, Dionysius the Areopagite and Maximus, but the conceptual and philosophical history prior to them is also surveyed.
