February 24th/25th, 2018 Page 1 As we enter into our second week of Lent it is a good time to make time for quiet reflection in this holy season. I think this is important to do not just for one day or once this week but consistently for the entire season of Lent. Maybe it is only an extra five or ten minutes each day to sit quietly and listen to the Word of God in Scripture and in your heart. The Lenten reflection booklets given to parishioners may be a part of that for you or just coming to the church for an extra few minutes of prayer. You probably noticed the request for silence in the church before mass to allow some extra time for centering in that way. Even our music has been simplified for Lent to help create a sense of the barrenness of the desert, for just as Jesus went there to pray and fast for forty days so our Lent tries to allow some of the same. In the gospel story we hear today, had Peter, James and John not gone up the mountain with Jesus they would have missed the experience of the transfiguration. When we don t take time with the Lord we can be missing messages and do not benefit from the gifts of the faith we share. The Stations of the Cross are another way to take extra time during Lent. With a slightly different focus each week, the dedicated groups and individuals leading this prayer help to provide a space for reflection on the passion of Christ. This Friday the students from Our Lady of Wisdom Newman Center, the University of Nevada parish in Reno, will present a living stations experience for us. This is always a powerful and prayerful and musical reflection as we walk the passion through the eyes of faithful young adults. This year our own parish teens also will present the stations for us, on March 16. The Stations of the Cross are prayed in Spanish each Friday as well. Each of these times of prayer is preceded by a simple soup supper which is another opportunity to observe one of the pillars of Lent in abstinence and even fasting by eating a little less, and is a nice time of fellowship together. Special thanks to the Women s Society who lovingly prepare the meals each week. I hope you will be able to be a part of the Stations of the Cross during this holy season. Don t forget our annual Crab Feed and fundraiser for St. Teresa School coming up on Saturday, March 3. A sort of breather from the somber nature of Lent, this event has become our single biggest fundraiser for the school and always has a great spirit of joy and support about it. A lot of work goes into the planning of this event and lots of folks give of their time to help out. I hope you can make it. Tickets are available at the school and in the parish office. I will be co-leading the Engaged Encounter retreat this weekend held at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School in Reno. As many of you know, this weekend is the primary part of marriage preparation in our diocese for any couples planning to marry in the Church. Several couples from our parish will be participating. It is led by two married couples and a priest and is an excellent opportunity for engaged couples to listen, pray and reflect with one another about the gift of their relationship, their call to a healthy and holy relationship and the importance of the Sacrament of Marriage. Please pray for the couples attending and we who will be presenting. I am grateful that Fr. Chris Kanowitz will be celebrating a couple of our masses Sunday morning so that I can participate in this retreat. I ll be back for the last mass on Sunday. Finally, be looking for a letter from this week about the Catholic Services Appeal, our annual call of support for the ministries of the Church in the Diocese of Reno. It is a bit more challenging this year due to the extra need we have been asked to support through the capital campaign, but if we all do our part I m confident we will raise what is needed. Another good opportunity to live out a Lenten observance of giving. Blessings to you all this Second Week of Lent! Fr. Chuck

Second Sunday of Lent Page 2 The Son and The Sun It was in the presence of Peter, James and John alone that Jesus was transfigured. It would seem that these three apostles were granted the privileged of witnessing the Transfigura on for being superior in faith to the other disciples. Or perhaps they were the most immature in faith so they were chosen for such a special grace. They were the ones who needed the experience most. They were the ones who greatly misunderstood the meaning of the Cross. These three greatly resisted the idea that Jesus would suffer painfully on the cross. Peter even tried to get Jesus forget about this absurd idea of the cross. James and John kept asking Jesus for the first places in the kingdom of the Father. How they completely missed the point of Jesus! At the mountain, Peter did not get the point of the Transfigura on. Peter wanted to hold on to the glory of Mt. Tabor, away from the passion and cross of Calvary: Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. He also placed Jesus on the same level and in the same category as Moses and Elijah: Let us put up three shelters one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah. God the Father himself would correct Peter solemnly: This is my beloved son. He is The Son. Jesus is not to be confused with anyone else just as The Sun is not to be confused with any of its satellite. All the rest reflect the light of The Sun. Jesus is the only one who radiates light. Everyone else lives in the Son s shadow. The disciples must not confuse Jesus with anyone else (Just as Snoopy is not to be confused with Charlie Brown.) The disciples must not confuse the Word with any other word. All the other words are in the service of the Word. I am reminded of my Jesuit spiritual director/zen master who used to remind me: When you give the homily, try to stay on the Table of the Word (lectern) so that you would be reminded that you are preaching God s Word and not your word. Lent is an appropriate me to re-connect with the Word. In this age of so much distrac on, it is quite easy to confuse the Word with others words. It is very much possible to confuse other sources of lights with the Sun. Fr H Praying with today s readings: 1. Abraham was listening when God called to him. The Father told the apostles to listen to Jesus. I ask for the grace of greater a en on to how and what God is communica ng to me. 2. Like Peter we too would rather stay in Mt. Tabor than proceed to Calvary. Like Peter we are also challenged to trust in Jesus and walk bravely with him to Calvary. We ask for the grace of courage to do so. Parish Mission Statement We, the Catholic Community of St. Teresa of Avila, are a people who journey together in prayer and service, nourished and unified at the Word and Eucharist, and under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We are called to love one another and to share our gifts of time, talent, and resources to welcome and to bring our faith to all people!

Ministry in Action Page 3 Good Stewardship Here I am! he answered. - Genesis 22:11 It may be easy to say, Here I am, Lord, when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say Here I am, Lord, when a neighbor needs our help, when we are invited to join a parish ministry, or when we are asked to provide financial support? Often times we are called when it s not convenient for us. Discipleship is not always easy, most of the time it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable. Thank you for your generous support of the Today Tomorrow Together diocesan campaign. We have pledges totaling $494,224 from 224 parishioners. Information and pledge cards are available near the front doors of the church.
