With overflowing passion and deep emotions of love and respect, I present this dedication to His Excellency President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak, President of Egypt, and the patron of Egyptian sports For his unwavering belief in and support of Egyptian youth, the true force behind our present and future national development. For his effective support of Egyptian sports activities and organizations, the support that has led us to significant achievements at all levels: international, African and Arab, and that was crowned with our five Olympic medals in Athens 2004. For the above, and in gratitude for enriching the Egyptian youth and sports movement, I humbly offer him this documentary on the history of the sport of modern rowing in Egypt. I also dedicate this work to each and every one who has contributed to spreading and developing the sport of rowing in Egypt, throughout its hundred-year history. Counselor / Khaled Zein ElDin FESAC President State Lawsuits Authority Vice-President 1

Introduction Celebrating the centennial of the Egyptian Rowing Federation in 2007 is a very special event, with a historical and cultural significance that instills pride in all of us Egyptians, as well as our Arab and African brothers and sisters. The Egyptian Rowing Federation is one of the earliest sports federations to be established anywhere in the world. It is also a founding member of the Egyptian Olympic Committee at the time of its establishment in 1910. Throughout its history, the federation has supported and developed the sport of modern rowing in Egypt, and participated in competitions at all levels: International, Olympic, African and Arab. On the local level, the Egyptian Rowing Federation was, and will remain, one of the most prominent sports management institutions, assuming the full responsibility of supporting and guiding the development of this great sport. In the context of celebrating the centennial of the Egyptian Rowing Federation, we present this memorial book, which tells some parts of the long story of this federation since its establishment one hundred years ago. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and respect to all previous members and presidents of the Egyptian Rowing Federation, who have put their effort and their passion into supporting and developing the sport of modern rowing in this great country. 2

Rowing From Ancient Rowing To Modern Rowing Rowing was the favorite sport practiced by ancient Egyptians. They competed between Luxor temple to Karnak temple in Luxor. Four thousands years ago, during the reign of the Pharaoh Akhenaton, a group of young oarsmen gathered on the Nile embankment in front of Luxor temple in Luxor (then known as Thebes, Capital of the ancient world) to compete in a royal regatta, known later as: The Competition started in front of Luxor temple and ended in front of Karnak temple (A 2000 meters race). This festival took place annually for centuries until gradually fading from the scene. It was a colorful Egyptian tradition. Monuments testify: If you visit the tomb of prince Khety at Bani Hassan, who belongs to the eleventh dynasty which ruled Egypt from 2040 1991 BC, You will find a tablet representing a Pharaonic Rowing Boat. In the Egyptian Museum, piece No. 4040 is another model of rowing boat from pure silver with its crew. Also under No. 4039 you will find a golden rowing boat. Three sailors of the crew are made of gold and the rest are made of silver. 4

Moreover there are models of wooden oars painted with shining black coating. These oars belong to Tot Ankh Amoun (A King from eighth Dynasty governed Egypt from 1554 to 1306 BC). In the year 1907 start the activity of Rowing sport, After that In the year 1971 the tradition was revived on the same race course with some difference. It became a modern National and International rowing regatta. Rowing Sport is considered one of the little sports who had been inserted in the Olympic program from the beginning; it was inserted in the second Olympic Games in Paris. Types of Rowing boats and its development: Rowing Boat is a beautiful model of artistic wood working. From the fine boat work which was made especially for rowing, the Zowbaa boat made by George Syberz in America 1838, who won the American race 1851 After that, He manufactures the quadruple boat out Riggers. The boat length was 30 foot and weighted140 pound. He made also the Oyenda boat on 1845 for Boston race, Harford University bought this boat, it was made from wood named Lepstreak, and the boat length was 37 foot and 3.5 foot width. The oarlock was manufacture from wood as for the boat; it was manufacture from wood pieces till the middle and the rest from one ornamentation wood piece, the shoes were made from wood bar, the chairs covered by red fabric. The 8 white oars were manufacture from oak, the length of the front and middle oars is 12 foot as for the back oars is 13 foot & 6 inches., this boat was used in Harford University. The Out Riggers boats were used in England Universities 1845, America Universities 1855, and the oars were manufacture from Argent Tanoub wood. A variety of boats are used in modern rowing, it could be divided into two main groups: 1. Boats with only one oar for each rower (sweep oar). And there are types for eight, four or two rowers and for boats of 2or 3 rowers it could be prepared for Cox nut for the eight boat, it is always with Cox. 5

2. Boats with 2 oars for each rower (scull) And there are types for one, two or four rowers and always without Cox Over years, rowing boat makers worked on the attempts to develop and improve the boat. The latest development in the field of boats industry came from Germany and it was on 1972, where the company named Empacher had created a way in manufacturing rowing boats in fiberglass and carbon, which proved a clear outdo so that all manufacturers continue in the same direction. The racing boat lengths and weights were stabilized at almost the same values which do not change significantly between companies. And these values are illustrated in the following table, with a simplified schematic design for each type of boat: Figure Symbol The English name The approx. length (Cm) The approx. weight (Kg) 8 + Eight 1990 96 4 - Coxless four 1340 50 4 + Coxed four 1370 51 2 - Coxless pair 1040 27 2 + Coxed pair 1040 32 4 x Quad scull 1340 52 2 x Double scull 1040 27 1 x Single scull 820 14 6

PART I Foundation of the Federation 7

Foundation of the Egyptian Rowing Federation Modern rowing entered Egypt at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. It entered with European communities who brought it over from their countries and established the earliest rowing clubs in Alexandria. The first of them was the German sports club (Deutscher Sportverein) and then the mixed Club (CICA) then the French Club (CNF). By 1907, there were 4 rowing clubs in Alexandria: The German club The mixed club The French club Alexandria Rowing Club Deutscher Sportverein (DSV) Club Internazionale Canottieri Alessandria (CICA) Club Nautique Française (CNF) Alexandria Rowing Club (ARC) On Thursday August 29, 1907, there was a meeting of 8 delegates, 2 from each club, and they founded the Egyptian International Federation of Rowing Clubs Fédèration Internationale d'egypte des Société d'aviron (FIESA)), for the purpose of organizing races and competitions between the member clubs of this federation. 8

Mr. Mieli, from the mixed Club was chosen as the first President of the federation, Mr. Ott from the German club as the Vice President, and Mr. Forzinetti from the French club as Secretary. The first rowing competition was held under the supervision of this federation after 3 days of its foundation. That was on Sunday September 1, 1907. It included competitions of double and quadruple Yule boats for 2000m and singles for 1500m. Races continued to be held during 1908, and the federation categorized the athletes in 3 categories: Seniors, juniors and debutants. In 1909 the Alexandria rowing club was re-declared under a new name: the Italian rowing Club (Società Canottieri Italia (SCI)), which replaced its predecessor in the Federation. In the summer of that year, Mr. Mieli resigned as President of the federation and was replaced by Mr. Raiss, also from the mixed Club. Also in 1909 the federation started to arrange the rowing races as high level social sport's occasions twice a year during summer. They printed fancy invitations containing the celebration program. The competitions would start at 3:00pm or 4:00pm, so that the last event starts at 6:00pm, is followed by the medals-awarding ceremony, a classical music concert, and then dinner. The regatta took place in Alexandria's Western Harbor, so that the finish line was in front of the Khedevial Yacht club, close to Ras El Teen Palace. 9

In 1910 the number of clubs increased to 5 after the joining of the Hellenic nautique club in Alexandria which was founded in the previous year. Also in this year, the federation began to hold its sports celebrations under the supervision of Alexandria's Governor, who was Ibrahim Pasha Abdi at that time. In 1911 the Federation was joined by the Swiss club in Alexandria and the Port Said Rowing club, which was founded by the British community in Port Said. The Port Said rowing Club was the first club from outside Alexandria. Also during this year Mr. Russos from the Hellenic nautique club was elected as the President of the Federation. In the September 1912 event, the program included a friendly water polo game between a team selected from the federation clubs and the British army team. The game was won by the British army team. In 1913 rowing continued to spread, and the Ismailia Rowing Club was founded and joined the Federation, bringing the number of member clubs to 8. The federation continued to be active during the first half of 1914: a board meeting was held on June 13th, and a regatta was organized in Port Said on June 21st. Because of the First World War, the Federation activities were stopped around the end of July 1914, and were not resumed until 1920. In 1935 rowing continued to spread and the royal rowing club (the Egyptian Rowing Club) was founded. 10
