Text: African American spiritual Confession and Forgiveness Welcome to worship at Vinje Lutheran Church. We want you to know that you are very welcome here. We want this to be a safe place, where we can bring our best and our worst, our peace and our pain. This is a place of healing and reconciliation. And now let us stand as we are able, to confess our brokenness and to hear God s word of forgiveness. All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, whose name is majestic in all the earth, who rescues and heals in every time of trouble, who does all things well. Amen. 1

Let us come before God, seeking forgiveness and life. Silence is kept for reflection. Steadfast and saving God, have mercy on us. We confess to you all the ways we turn from you and harm one another. In your compassion, forgive our sins and heal our hurts. Bring forth from us a harvest of righteousness, the fruits of gentleness and peacemaking, the sheaves of wisdom and justice; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. In the name of Jesus, the Son of God, receive mercy and find grace in your time of need. Your transgressions are forgiven; God s love is healing balm for your wounds. Rejoice, for God raises you up to new life in Christ. Amen. Gathering Song Shall We Gather at the River Hymnal #423 1 Shall we gather at the river, where bright angel feet have trod, with its crystal tide forever flowing by the throne of God? Refrain Yes, we'll gather at the river, the beautiful, the beautiful river; gather with the saints at the river that flows by the throne of God. 2 On the margin of the river, washing up its silver spray, we will walk and worship ever, all the happy golden day. Refrain 3 Ere we reach the shining river, lay we ev'ry burden down; grace our spirits will deliver, and provide a robe and crown. Refrain 2

4 Soon we'll reach the shining river, soon our pilgrimage will cease; soon our happy hearts will quiver with the melody of peace. Refrain Text: Robert Lowry, 1826-1899 Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day Sovereign God, you turn your greatness into goodness for all the peoples on earth. Shape us into willing servants of your kingdom, and make us desire always and only your will, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Welcome and Announcements WORD First Lesson Isaiah 53:4-12 Bible, pg. 596 This reading is from the last of four passages in Isaiah that are often called servant songs. Christians are probably most familiar with this servant song. In light of Christian faith, the servant s healing ministry and redemptive suffering are understood to be fulfilled in the life and death of Christ. 4 Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 3

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 8 By a perversion of justice he was taken away. Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people. 9 They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the LORD shall prosper. 11 Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge. The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will allot him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God Second Lesson Hebrews 5:1-10 Bible, pg. 973 Using imagery from scripture and from Jewish worship practices, Jesus is presented as the great high priest who was obedient to God s saving plan. Through his suffering and death he has become the source of eternal salvation. 1 Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; 3 and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. 4 And one does not presume to take 4

this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, You are my Son, today I have begotten you ; 6 as he says also in another place, You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek. 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10 having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Word of God, Word of Life Please stand, as you are able Thanks be to God Acclamation Halle, Hallelujah Hymnal #172 Halle, halle, hallelujah. Halle, halle, hallelujah. Halle, halle, hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Holy Gospel Mark 10:35-45 Bible, pg. 822 On the way to Jerusalem the disciples ask Jesus to grant them seats of honor. Jesus responds by announcing that he and his followers will rule through self-giving service. The Holy Gospel, according to Mark the 10 th Chapter: Glory to you, O Lord James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him and said to him, Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. 36 And he said to them, What is it you want me to do for you? 37 And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory. 38 But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am 5

baptized with? 39 They replied, We are able. Then Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. 41 When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called them and said to them, You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. 43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. The Gospel of our Lord: Praise to you, O Christ Please be seated Message The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song Hymn of the Day Will You Let Me Be Your Servant Hymnal #659 1 Will you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too. 2 We are pilgrims on a journey, we are trav'lers on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load. 3 I will hold the Christ-light for you in the nighttime of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear. 4 I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I'll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow till we've seen this journey through. 6

Offertory Goodness is Stronger than Evil Hymnal #721 Goodness is stronger than evil; love is stronger than hate; light is stronger than darkness; life is stronger than death; vict'ry is ours, vict'ry is ours, through God who loves us. Amen. Words of Institution In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, 9

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. God gives food to those who hunger. Come, be fed, be healed. Music during Communion Hymn Blessed Assurance Hymnal #638 1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his Spirit, washed in his blood. Refrain This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior, all the day long: this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. 2 Perfect submission, perfect delight, visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain 3 Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. Refrain Text: Fanny J. Crosby, 1820-1915 10

Jen: Please note, we are doing a mash up of the next two hymns one verse of Amazing Grace, followed by one verse of What a Friend. Hymn Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound Hymnal #779 Hymn What a Friend We Have in Jesus Hymnal #742 1 Amazing grace! how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see. 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry ev'rything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit; oh, what needless pain we bear-- all because we do not carry ev'rything to God in prayer! 2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! 2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged-- take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our ev'ry weakness-- take it to the Lord in prayer. 3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; 'tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. 3 Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge-- take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? 11

Take it to the Lord in prayer. In his arms he'll take and shield you; you will find a solace there. 4 The Lord has promised good to me; his word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. 5 When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun. Text: John Newton, 1725-1807, alt., sts. 1-4; anonymous, st. 5 Table Blessing The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in God s grace. Prayer after Communion We give you thanks, O God, that you welcome us to your table and satisfy our deepest hunger and thirst. By your gifts of word and holy meal, strengthen us to take up the cross as we go about our callings in this world, following after Jesus Christ, our servant Lord. Amen. O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us. Amen SENDING 12

Benediction Like children in the arms of Jesus, receive blessing: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen.
