God is doing something extraordinarily new in our life at Saint Columbkille Parish. Are you awake and alert? Do you see it? Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; He will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. I am happy to announce that Bishop Nelson has officially appointed me as your pastor! As your new pastor, I am filled with hope for our future together and look forward to growing as missionary disciples of Jesus for many years to come. My mission, like that of Saint John the Baptist, is to point the way to Jesus! I must decrease and Christ must increase. God is doing great things among us! We have a messenger in our midst this weekend. Father John Singler, pastor of Saint Mary Parish in Berea is preaching at all our Masses to get us ready for an awesome two night mission on the ritual of Holy Communion. Father Singler is helping us to prepare the way of receiving the Lord in a more reverent and joyful manner by teaching us the meaning behind our actions during Communion. All are welcome and encouraged to attend but I especially would like our liturgical ministers to be present: communion ministers, readers, ushers, altar servers, and choir members. Your presence and input will assist us in making our celebration of Mass the very best it can be. Here is one teaching to help get us ready for the mission: Did you know that the purpose of the tabernacle in church is to reserve the Blessed Sacrament for Adoration and to take Communion to the sick members of our parish community? The tabernacle is not meant to be a divine refrigerator where an overabundance of Jesus is kept and brought out at every Mass to distribute to the people in the pews. At each Mass we are instructed by the Church to consecrate only enough hosts for the gathered assembly. The spiritual reason behind this is to unify us as the Body of Christ so that everyone present is receiving Jesus who has been consecrated at the Mass in which they are present and actively praying! Never forget the Lord is with you always! PARISH VISION STATEMENT As the Parish of Saint Columbkille, we strive to be a welcoming, caring, Catholic family that transforms lives, proclaiming the Kingdom of God. (Vision is about who we want to be in the future ) PARISH MISSION STATEMENT As missionary disciples of Jesus, being formed as a community through Scripture and Sacraments, we are sent into the world to joyfully proclaim the Gospel with our lives. (Mission is about what we do now ) 2.

ADVENT PARISH MISSION United In The Lord s Mission PARISH MISSION DECEMBER 10th and 11th COMMUNION RITE presented by Reverend John P. Singler Pastor, Saint Mary Parish, Berea Sunday, December 10th, 7:00 p.m. (Part I) Monday, December 11th, 7:00 p.m. (Part II) Did you know that the Sacred Liturgy is not run by the presiding priest but rather is the work of the people, by the people and for the people? All are welcome and encouraged to come to our Advent Parish Mission presented by Father John Singler, Pastor of Saint Mary s Parish in Berea, who will present to us a two night mission on receiving the Holy Eucharist and the Church s teaching on the Communion Rite during Mass. Father Anthony extends a special invitation to our Extraordinary Minister s of Holy Communion, choir members, altar servers, ushers and readers to be present. The outcome of this mission will be a more reverent and Spirit filled reception of Holy Communion so ultimately we become living and visible extensions of Jesus Christ in our world! 3

FAITH FORMATION AND PRAYER FATHER JAMIE S HEALING HUMOR There are three periods in a person s life: 1. When you believe in Santa Claus 2. When you don t believe in Santa Claus 3. When you are Santa Claus (from Holy Humor, edited by Cal and Rose Samra, 1996) As Santa Claus heralds the coming of Christmas and Christmas presents, so John the Baptist heralded the coming of the Messiah, Jesus the Lord. Jesus is God s greatest present to us. His presence on earth as a human being signals the end of the reign of darkness, sin and death to humankind. Jesus ushers in the kingdom of love, light and hope. May the light of Christ glow brightly within us that our joy may herald the coming year. RECENT BAPTISMS Thaddeus Ansel Templeton PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK Please keep in your prayers Virginia Zenkert and all the members of our parish who are ill. May the healing hands of Jesus Christ be upon them! Please call the rectory office at (216) 524-1987, if a family member s or friend s name needs to be added to the list. FATHER CHRIS SPIRITUAL PROGRESS RATHER THAN SPIRITUAL PERFECTION Saint Thomas Aquinas is considered one of the greatest theologians to ever live. In his simplicity and clear thought, he has shared many principles for a holy life. One of these principles is: Do good and avoid evil. This sounds simple and rather obvious, but how can this be achieved? Well, by doing simple things such as: avoiding pride, selfishness, greed and dishonesty while looking to be humble, unselfish, honest and pure. Avoiding what is wrong and doing what is right. Simple things that lead to holy lives. ADVENT INVITATION TO EUCHARISTIC ADORATION As we enter the Season of Advent, we would like to offer an Advent Invitation to Eucharistic Adoration. This invitation is open to individuals who are not currently adorers who would like to find time during Advent to deepen their relationship with Jesus in the Eucharist. If you cannot commit weekly, then other options are available, such as bi-weekly, monthly or even as a substitute. The Adoration team will work with you to find an hour that best fits your schedule! Please contact Scott and Mandy Effertz at (216) 310-6831, or via email at sajjeff@aol.com for more information. OPLATKY (CHRISTMAS WAFERS) Oplatky will be for sale in the church vestibule after the Vigil and Sunday Masses, December 9th and 10th and December 16th and 17th. Beginning Monday, December 18th, it will then be sold in the parish office. IN MEMORIAM Please remember in prayer Viola Dobosz, John S. Lupica, Connie, Kollar, Louise Barth, Robert V. Miller, Angela Vargo, Genevieve Gall, Christopher Hall and all who have gone before us. May God bring us comfort in our grief and bring our loved ones to eternal rest. PLANNING TO MARRY IN 2018? PATRIOTIC ROSARY Join us in the Cry Room of the church to pray the Patriotic Rosary, every Friday, at 2:00 p.m. The five decades will be offered for the President, the Supreme Court, the Senate, the House of Representatives, the State Governors, and all County and Municipal Offices. Each of the 50 states will be prayed for on the decades of Hail Mary s. Each decade will end with a prayer for the conversion of our country. Confronting Relativism Presented by Father Kevin Klonowski, Parochial Vicar, Holy Family Parish, Stowe Doors open 7:00 p.m. Admission $5 MEN OF MERCY Did you know that there is a men s group in our parish who feeds the hungry, shelters the homeless, buries the dead and other Corporal Works of Mercy? The Men of Mercy, formed in late 2016, has donated thousands of dollars to needy families and individuals in our area. Here are just a few of the causes that we have supported thus far: Provided financial support to a Broadview Heights family who lost their home and all of their possessions in a fire. Assisted with the medical expenses of a Parma resident who is currently living on an artificial heart machine, awaiting a transplant at the Cleveland Clinic. Donated bus passes to a local organization that temporarily houses recently released prisoners, allowing them to attend medical appointments and job interviews as they acclimate back into society. (Prior to this, they shared one bicycle!) Comprised of over 40 local area men, we meet right here at Saint Columbkille. If you are looking for a Ministry that is making a real difference and doesn t require a huge time commitment (we meet only 4 times a year!) please consider joining our ranks. For more information, please contact Gary Minjock at (216) 408-3242. 2018 MARCH FOR LIFE January 18th & 19th WASHINGTON, D.C.
